I found this website is very interesting because like most of us I have an older parents.The one of the most difficult decisions children have to make is to place his or her aging parent in long term care facility. This website provides different tips on how to keep seniors in their regular place of residence as long as possible. The organization PACE that covered under Medicare or Medicaid provides necessary services, include adult day program, transportation, activities and medical help. As a future OT practitioners we may recommend this website to our clients.

This website really helped me understand body mechanics more. Of course we all should know by now what the basic body mechanics are "lift with your knees, keep heavy loads close to your body etc." This website takes it one step further and actually describes in detail how to specifically perform each technique. It also mentions several techniques that I was not aware of. It is so important to take care of your body, and to stay safe. This is a great website to take a look at!

This article details the 5-step protocol that was developed in response to the large number of amputees from Operation Enduring Freedom. The article is broken into 3 "phases": "acute care, subacute care, and long-term rehbilitation needs."

This on-line edition of Occupational Therapy in Oncology and Palliative Care edited by Jill Cooper does an excellent job explaining in layman terms the different aspects of cancer to include tumor classification, etiologies, symptoms, diagnosis and treatments. It then discusses the different reasons some OTs decide to work in this specialty and how the OT can better deal with the stresses they encounter in treating those with cancer. I would definitely read this in its entirety if I chose to work with cancer patients.

OT practitioners will work with clients with dysphagia in many places including long-term care to schools. Preparing the body for best position for swallowing and digestion, modifying textures for safety, and compensatory techniques are all things the practitioner can assist with. AOTA offers certification to practitioners for feeding, eating m and swallowing.

This is an AOTA article on oncology and how OT impact it in every way. It also explains the ways we would treat, and also settings too. I love how the article is focused on OT. It is very important to understand that we may be treating individuals who are on all different levels, including newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, receiving hospice or palliative care, or who are in the survivorship phase of care.

This is the pamphlet from Hamilton General Hospital that is given to their burn patients. It covers everything we discussed in class with Teri in easy to understand language and provides visual aids of the different levels of burns. It also talks about the role of OT, exercises, diet and nutrition, coping and recovery, ADLs, caring for the skin, and what the patient is to do once they return home. Good info!

The nature of care-giving can place great physical stress on you as the caregiver. Practicing proper body mechanics will decrease the stress and strain and help to safely manage the mobility of the care-receiver. The primary rule is to maintain the normal lumbar curve at all times.

Another article discussing the importance of OT in burn recovery. It's shorter than others I found and discusses a few different areas.

When we first started talking about how OT can help burn patients I did not see how we could help. This unit, as well as this article, helped me to see how important OT can be to burn survivors. Hand therapy, splinting, self-care retraining, face and neck stretching, wound care, scar massage and functional improvement are all things we can help with. In addition, helping them get back to their roles in the community.

This is a great reference chart for MET levels.   It divides it up into self care, household, recreational, and vocational activities.  This is a great reference to see what ADLs and IADLs have MET levels from light all the way up to very heavy MET levels.
