MuscleHack has two main slogans, the highlighted one being "Home of Muscle Growth" and the one in the logo being "Mor Muscle, Less Fat, Less Time." Mark McManus, the blogger who maintains MuscleHack, makes it clear right away that this is a website dedicated to shedding off as much fat and putting on as much muscle in as little time as possible.

These slogans also suggest (and this can be verified by reading a few blog posts) that Mark very firmly believes that his information contained in this blog is the best (and possibly only) way to safely put on muscle quickly.

  • Muscle growth, which is sometimes called  ‘muscle hypertrophy‘, is what this site is all about. Yes there are thousands of different training systems out there, but this one is designed SPECIFICALLY to make your muscles larger – PERIOD!
    • Elias Rumley

Note the first three paragraphs. "... MuscleHack, the home of muscle growth." "If you want to learn how to build muscle fast, MuscleHack is THE place to be." "... this [training program] is designed SPECIFICALLY to make your muscles larger - PERIOD!" Immediately, the blogger uses repetition (in conjunction with the slogans) to get it clear that this website is entirely about muscle gain, no questions asked.

A search over the website shows that the term "free" appears 9 times on this page. Apparently Mark wants to be very clear that there is no risk in following his blog, as everything here is free. In a sense, it's Logo. This blog is free, and as proven earlier, will not scam you or abuse your information; therefore, you should have no reason to not follow this blog.

  • The Muscle Hacker is Mark McManus, a 29 year old Certified Fitness Instructor committed to helping others build the body of their dreams. Mark is a naturally skinny guy who overcame the hardgainer's curse through years of research and personal experience. Whether you want to build new slabs of muscle or drop your body fat percentage to reveal chiseled abs, Mark CAN make it happen for you.
    • Elias Rumley

Mark uses Ethos by claiming he is a Certified Fitness Instructor, who was a "hardgainer" (ie, a skinny or slim male who has difficulty in developing muscle) who overcame this barrier; therefore, he must have the credentials to help you gain muscle also.

Near the top of the page, you have an opportunity to "grap a copy of Mark's FREE book". I have personally looked into this myself, and what it doesn't tell you is that this is that you end up the mailing list by asking for this book. While it is very easy to withdraw from the mailing list, it is a clever trick to get you to come back to this website at least once to remove yourself from the list. Mark may realize that one return to his website could be enough to keep you coming back for more out of curiosity, something he as a blogger wants out of readers.

The website is riddled with pictures of muscular men. This is an appeal to men who want to have that physical appearance. The pictures are an attempt to subconsciously plant the (inaccurate) logic of "If I read this blog, I will look like these men" in the minds of certain readers.

Another side note about these pictures - most of them are actually of Mark, trying to convince the reader that this blogger has seen results with his own information, and so must have some sort of credibility (Ethos).

To provide an outlet for users to passively advertise MuscleHack, users have the option to like MuscleHack on Facebook. The ideology behind this is that this act of liking MuscleHack will result in a post in Facebook's news feed, resulting in the possibility of Mark receiving a new reader from a curious Facebooker.

This paragraph gives a different aspect of yoga that most people don't think about. "Laughing uncontrollably" and "waving your hands like you just don't care" imply a fun and energetic workout, which attracts anyone that wants to have a good time. It's a great thing that kundalini yoga awakens the energy coiled up at the base of your spine. So you get energized and receive a detoxification of the body and mind.

This sentence relieves any tension or stress one may feel when they are thinking about taking up yoga. It tells the reader that if you don't feel right about doing a certain type of yoga, try a different kind. There is no pressure to keep up with the same type of yoga if your body doesn't feel right doing it. This lessens the anxiety most people feel when they are considering taking up a new activity.

In this picture a sense of community is felt. The many legs with black yoga pants on top of the colourful yoga mats with a sunset in the background give a sense of happiness and belonging. Everyone is doing the same pose which shows that anyone can do yoga. Since only legs are shown and no faces or bodies, it implies that it doesn't matter what race, age, sex or athletic ability you are, anyone can participate in yoga and become a part of a community while getting healthier.

The light pink/peachish colour brings the readers attention to this quote. On a page that is full of black text on a white background our eyes are drawn to the saying which sticks out like a sore thumb on the web page. Also the swirly type text pulls in the reader, since the rest of the page has a standard text that is easy to read but not nearly as appealing. This quote changes everytime one opens the page, and it is also a part of the lululemon manifesto. These quotes appear on many pages of the site, and they are the attention grabing text on every page.

The lack of resistance children sometimes show also contributes to their feelings of guilt and their fear of disclosing because they do not want others to assume they “invited” the incident. Disclosure of sexual abuse varies. Some children disclose their abuse immediately, while some are unable to due to their feelings of fear, shame, guilt and confusion.

95% of abusers know their victims. These people can be someone in our family, our doctor, our coaches, our troop leaders, our clergy, our teachers. This means that as parents we need to be more vigilant and ask questions about those who are in our childrens lives. Keep your eyes and ears open, listen to your child when they are talking to you as they often insert warnings into their conversations with us to test how we will react.

  • Psychologist Frederick Mathews’ research on child molesters, “Help for Adults Who Molest Children,” is written for individuals who sexually abuse children. The literature emphasizes that individuals who have molested a child must immediately receive help to decrease their chance of reoffending. Mathews stresses that child molesters are not likely to stop sexually victimizing children on their own, intervention is required. It is important that child molesters ask for help so that they can learn to understand why they commit these crimes, the sexual assault cycle and their triggers. There is not a quick fix to this problem, it requires a lifetime of work and treatment.

  • In 2001, Researchers at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine and University College London reviewed the case notes of 225 male sex abusers and 522 other male patients being treated in a London clinic. The study found that the child abusers had been victims of sexual violence more often than the patients who had not committed sexual abuse. This finding suggests that there is a victim-to-perpetrator cycle in some men who commit sex crimes. Psychoanalytic theory proposes that a hostile childhood can create a need to replace feelings of “defeat” with those of “triumph.” For an individual to accomplish this emotional shift they may become a sexual aggressor as an adult.

Also there is "Tell us about your Y" title under which makes it more personal. Ethos because the guardian and child do seem like real patrons which gives credability.Logos because it makes sense of taking your child for a swim where it is safe and happy.

This is an appeal to religion (since the authors quote a religious authority figure) as well as to morality. Without providing any kind of evidence, the authors attempt to convince people by telling them that it is their duty to oppose abortion.

This is a personal argument based on the author's own personal experience. Although it shows what can happen, the author makes it seem as though it is an inevitable result of abortion. However, it cannot be generalized as other people may have had different experiences and feel differently about the issue.

These pictures try to persuade people by making them believe that God does not condone abortion. It is also a reference to our 'playing God', which happens to be a common religious argument against scientific advancements. Furthermore, the depiction of children serves to demonstrate that children are an essential part of 'God's plan' and must, therefore, be protected. They also look weak and defenseless, which elicits an emotional response also known as the mother's / father's instinct.

This is a picture of a 14-week old fetus. It, too, is supposed to elicit an emotional response, or a protective instinct. Since the 'baby' is fully recognizable as a 'human being' (due to the fact that it certainly looks like one), it serves to reinforce the argument that abortion is murder.

The aborted fetus is supposed to make one feel disgusted and devastated as well as angry and sad. However, this is an 11-week old fetus (as opposed to the 14-week old fetus). It may be the case that there is a fundamental difference between an 11-week old and a 14-week old fetus in terms of their development into an actual human being.

This brutal description of what happened to the fetus in the picture once again elicits a strong emotional response. In addition to that, the author also fails to mention that there may be more to abortion than the 'killing' of 'human beings'.

This is an appeal to emotion. The authors make the readers recall certain significant past events such as their prom or their first date. By doing so, the reader is forced to think about what it would have been like if it had been him or her and the authors successfully make it a very personal issue.

The authors then go on to argue that abortion is not only morally wrong but also politically wrong as it takes away several rights from a 'human being'. Furthermore, they compare it to feminist issues (which is also why they chose to call the fetus "Sara" and refer to it as a "girl"), thereby appealing to women and especially to feminists (whether they be male or female).

  • This first question we must ask ourselves when considering our opinion on abortion is this: "Is something being killed?" Everyone familiar with biology will answer yes. The next question is "What is being killed?" A simple way to answer this is to ask "Does it have DNA? The answer is yes. What kind is it? Human. The DNA at 5 minutes after conception is identical to the DNA 85 years after conception.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo
      Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo on 28 Feb 12

The authors try to argue deductively. However, they assume that everything they say is based on nothing but facts even though they never prove that everything that 'has human DNA' is in fact a fully developed human being.

      Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo on 28 Feb 12

The authors try to persuade the readers that the women who decide to get an abortion are actually victims. Surely, some of them regret it but there are also women who do not regret it. By taking one example and presenting it as a general rule of thumb, the authors redirect the reader's anger toward the authorities and the institutions that support abortion.

  • Abortion is not the first time this word game of personhood vs. humanity has been played with human life. During the slave trade, it was acknowledged that black people were human beings, but not "persons". During the Holocaust, Hitler acknowledged that Jews were human beings. That's why he performed horrible experiments on them, but he did not acknowledge their "personhood."
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo
      Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo on 28 Feb 12

By comparing abortion to slavery and to the Holocaust, the authors once again elicit a strong emotional and moral response that leads to the readers thinking about the wrongness of the act. Abortion is thereby inevitably depicted as a crime (or even genocide), which is an attempt to make people want to oppose it.

  • In the last 30 years approximately 21,500,000 women have died violent deaths in the United States. They have had their arms ripped off, they have had their legs ripped off, they have had their heads cut off. These women were defenceless, they could not speak out to defend themselves. They remained silent as they were brutally murdered. These women were not fully grown. They were waiting to be born. These women died from abortion. Most abortionists are men who say that they are in favour of women's rights and they say they shun violence against women. Obviously, they are not in favour of the rights of women in the womb.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo
      Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo on 28 Feb 12

Once again, the authors appeal to feminism and claim (without any evidence) that abortion is, indeed, murder. They are thereby taking the peripheral route rather than the central route to persuasion as they focus on the emotional rather than the factual / logical aspects of the matter.

Making it seem as though abortion is but a business distracts from other aspects of it such as 'abortion as a result of rape' etc. and redirects anger toward the institutions that support it. Hence, people's desire to put an end to abortion grows (if they do not critically reflect on it, that is).

    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo
      Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo on 28 Feb 12

The description of the process ('a miracle') once again adds a religious or a spiritual aspect to it. Claiming that it is in fact a 'new human life' ignores the actual controversy around the issue and effectively introduces the next and final argument.

      Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo on 28 Feb 12

Repeating the main statement (it is murder) and ending the discussion with a 'prayer' emphasizes the wrongness of the act as well as the religious aspect of it. We should not play God because 'in Your way [God's way] we have absolute confidence', meaning that if God wanted it to happen it would happen naturally (by itself). Furthermore, ending the discussion the same it started is also very effective as it demonstrates that it is now 'complete' (like a 'vicious' cycle that one cannot escape).

It repairs our cells and fights infection and tumours to help us live longer and healthier... It can increase blood flow by up to 200%, which has numerous health benefits. Not least among them, it allows men to produce erections and heightens sexual stimulation for both sexes. The principle action of Viagra, by the way, is to raise nitric oxide levels... Increasing blood flow also improves the circulatory system by keeping blood vessels clear of plaque and other harmful build-up... Nitric oxide plays a major role in maintaining healthy blood pressure by signalling blood vessels to expand!

  • A recent National School Boards Association survey (2007) announced that upward of 80 percent of young people who are online are networking and that 70 percent of them are regularly discussing education-related topics.
    ...
    Cancel
  • these shifts demand that we move our concept of learning from a "supply-push" model of "building up an inventory of knowledge in the students' heads" (p. 30) to a "demand-pull" approach that requires students to own their learning processes and pursue learning, based on their needs of the moment, in social and possibly global communities of practice.

  • Last December, in an effort to honor the memory of her grandfather who had died the year before, Laura decided to do one good deed each day in the run-up to Christmas. She decided, with her mother's approval, to share her work with the world.Laura's blog, "Twenty-Five Days to Make a Difference" (http://twentyfivedays.wordpress.com), quickly caught the eye of some other philanthropic bloggers.

  • Laura is not just publishing, and others are not just reading. Now when she wants ideas for charities to work for as her project enters its 11th month, Laura says, "I ask my readers" (Richardson, 2008).
    ...
    Cancel
  • In addition, under her mother's guidance and care, Laura is learning online network literacies firsthand. As Stanford researcher Danah Boyd (2007) points out, we are discovering the potentials and pitfalls of this new public space. What we say today in our blogs and videos will persist long into the future and not simply end up in the paper recycling bin when we clean out our desks at the end of the year. What we say is copyable; others can take it, use it, or change it with ease, making our ability to edit content and comprehend the ethical use of the content we read even more crucial. The things we create are searchable to an extent never before imagined and will be viewed by all sorts of audiences, both intended and unintended.
    ...
    Cancel
  • These new realities demand that we prepare students to be educated, sophisticated owners of online spaces. Although Laura is able to connect, does she understand, as researcher Stephen Downes (2005) suggests, that her network must be diverse, that she must actively seek dissenting voices who might push her thinking in ways that the "echo chamber" of kindred thinkers might not? Is she doing the work of finding new voices to include in the conversation? Is she able to make astute decisions about the people with whom she interacts, keeping herself safe from those who might mean her harm? Is she learning balance in her use of technology, or is she falling into the common pattern of spending hours at the keyboard, losing herself in the network? This 10-year-old probably still needs to learn many of these things, and she needs the guidance of teachers and adults who know them in their own practice.
    ...
    Cancel
  • More than ever before, students have the potential to own their own learning — and we have to help them seize that potential. We must help them learn how to identify their passions; build connections to others who share those passions; and communicate, collaborate, and work collectively with these networks.
    ...

This paragraph seems a bit jumbled. Because it's the first text people read, it may be more beneficial to state something more general and audience-friendly. What is written here seems a bit technical to jump into right off the start. Or, instead of having it all in one paragraph, it could be split into bullet points for easier reading.

Here Ibanez uses well known musicians to help sell their guitars. They show you guitars each person uses, backing the guitars with credible musicians.

This is using Ethos backing your product with someone who knows the subject, but also this can appeal to one's emotions, possibly getting someone to buy a more expensive guitar because their favourite musician uses it.

On this electric guitars page they show pictures of guitars from the different electric guitar series. This is a great alternative to just text, as it catches your attention and appeals you the reader more. This also helps if you are looking for a guitar with a specific look.

I find that even with a simple texture on this frame, it looks much better than a solid colour frame would.

Noticing that the electric guitar section seems to be all about rocking out, the texture could be seen as kind of "grungy", appealing to a rocker more than a simple plain colour might.

A larger set of links at the bottom of the page can take you away from the products to information on artists, news, archives and more. This is good, as it helps find information faster.

TeachPaperless: 10 Ways to Help Students Ask Better Questions - 1 views

  • The points students bring up are thought-provoking. However, I'm most impressed by the questions they ask one another. They clarify and ask follow-up questions. They make inferences. They ask connecting questions and critical thinking questions. It's a messy process, but it's beautiful messy. It's art.

  • As long as a question is respectful, I want students to question their world. This applies to analyzing mathematical processes, thinking through social issues, making sense out of a text or analyzing the natural world for cause and effect.
    ...

  • I require students to ask questions before, during and after reading.

  • Three times a week, we do inquiry days, where students begin with their own question in either social studies or science and they research it, summarize it and then ask further questions. While my initial goal involved teaching bias, loaded language and summarization, I soon realized that students were growing the most in their ability to ask critical thinking questions.

  • Feedback on questions: I highlight their questions in Google Docs and leave comments on their blogs with very specific feedback.

  • Sometimes I'll ask a really lame question and then say, "Someone tell my why that question sucked?" or I'll ask a deeper question and say, "Why was that a hard question to answer?" The goal is to get them to see deeper questions and to also think about why a question is deep or shallow.

  • Some students have a really hard time with questioning strategies.

  • I teach students about inquiry, clarifying, critical thinking and inference questioning.

  • Students sometimes ask me questions. Other times they ask partners or small group questions. Still other times they ask the questions to the whole class.

  • Technology allows students to take their time in crafting a question while having access to the questions of their peers.

Someone should smack this person. I may not be politically correct all the time, but it seems as though people only critisize something they know very little about.

I would say that I demonstarte kindness and compassion to animals in rodeo, as my horse is used in rodeo and i treat him with the utmost respect. I cannot do what I love without that horse, and I know he likes his job.

  • The downside to that is every time we give an inch and try to work with animal welfare groups, they take a mile and make it seem like we are guilty.

  • It is called natural selection and back in 1859, Charles Darwin began to document that the preservation of the species was based on Natural Selection. This still holds true today. If it were not for the option for ranchers to sell these cattle to rodeo livestock producers, the alternative would be certain death. Natural selection of rodeo livestock started when rodeo started and has evolved to include semen sexing, embryo transfer and cloning!

  • Rodeo livestock lives better than most people; certainly their breeders and owners. Regular, premium feed, and even bottled water in some cases, help to preserve the animals by keeping them comfortable, hydrated and able to perform to their ability. For these and other reasons it is a fact that many bulls today are marked and sold for six figures! They are as valuable as a prized thoroughbred race horse yet one does not see the Kentucky Derby, Preakness or Belmont being limited or eliminated.

The back ground colours are sublet and easy to follow. The darker green is dark enough so that the reader knows that that is the title and what the site is about. having the board in grey and the main page white draws the readers eyes towards the font.
