Boredom occurs when one cannot stand not having anything to do. The body may be at rest but the brain wants something to happen or to do. The first thing I notice about boredom is that it is a peculiar human affliction affecting grown - ups and teenagers. Very young children and the other living things do not seem to be bothered by boredom. Suffer From Boredom My neighbor has two dogs whose only job is to stay around the house and bark if strangers approached. Beside that they have nothing else to do. However I have never ever seen them looked bored. Usually when there is nothing in particular happening, they just retire to a corner and have a nap. Of coarse just as easily they can wake up when they have to. They do not suffer the guilt that humans have when they take a nap. Also they do not suffer from insomnia or reluctance to get up from sleep. So it is the same with the other animals and living things that I know. They do not seem to suffer from boredom.

It is said in the 18th century the American general Israel Putnam once invited a British general to a novel test of nerves. Both were to sit on barrels of gunpowder, and the fuses were to bit lit. The last man to run away would be the winner. The unnamed British general accepted Putman's challenge. Carbon 14 is a radioactive substance that exists in minute quantities. In the late 1940's Libby discovered that all plants and animals absorb it. When they die, the carbon-like all radioactive substances-begins to decay at a regular rate. Libby was able to measure this rate and could thus use carbon 14 as an archeological calendar. Today it is known that half of the carbon 14 in living organism disappears in 5,730 years, half of what remains in an additional 5,730 years, and so on. How old is old? Many of the items found at prehistoric sites are made of organic material. By measuring the amount of carbon 14 remaining in the shaft of an old ax or a piece of pottery, for example, scientists can accurately determine its age. Radiocarbon dating has proved to be phenomenally accurate: it can date to within 100 years going back to 50,000 B.C. It is particularly useful on wood because it can be checked against Dendron-chronology, dating by tree rings. A new ring forms every year in the trunk of a tree as it grows: counting the number of rings enables one to determine the age of any tree. Where did civilization begin?
