    What:
    Assisting with Reading Fluency in the Classroom will provide the paraeducator with the information and skills needed to assist classroom teachers in meeting the literacy needs of a variety of students. It deals with the specific area of reading fluency. It prepares paraeducators to understand important fluency concepts and terms, and to use a variety of research-based instructional techniques that improve fluency at the word, phrase, sentence, and connected text levels. The Instructional Teamwork Academy academy is designed to help paraeducators work effectively on a team. This course is recommended for teachers as well. Teachers and/or paraeducators may take this course without the other team member, but it is most effective when teams take the course together. The academy consists of four modules consisting of introductory material regarding teamwork, delineation of roles and responsibilities, classroom instruction, and behavior management.

    When upper elementary or secondary students fail written assessments, teachers often assume it's because they lack specific content knowledge. But what if it's simply because they cannot read the multisyllabic words? All reading consists of three components: word identification, vocabulary, and comprehension. Word identification is often overlooked and can be the root of students' failure. Hear about new evidence-based data on prefixes, suffixes, and Greek roots occurring most often in content-area words that supports a shared responsibility for strengthening students' literacy skills. Discover quick, formative assessments for upper elementary and secondary teachers that measure students' ability to use knowledge of syllable types, syllable division patterns, and common morphemes (e.g., prefixes, suffixes, Greek roots) to decode multisyllabic words. The CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook, a comprehensive resource in teaching research based reading instruction, is used during the session as a resource in helping teachers improve instruction in multisyllabic word instruction.

    The Common Core State Standards(CCSS) require both students and teachers to demonstrate digital literacy skills by publishing texts online and developing communication skills through the use of different technology tools. The Mapping Media to the Common Core course (part 1) introduces teachers to six different multimedia products which students can create to meet the CCSS requirements; These strategies can also be used to differentiate instruction to meet the  needs of students with disabilities or those with high abilities! Each participant will use an iPad to access the interactive course eBook, as well as, create and share a variety of media products during the course. Participants will need access to an iPad for this course.

Boosting Literacy with Effective Reading Comprehension - Webinar - June 15, 2011 - 0 views

Many of the efforts directed toward teaching reading comprehension focus on providing practice at answering questions, while neglecting to teach learners how to reliably answer those questions. In this presentation, we will describe a program that systematically teaches the fundamental strategies for reading success: inferential comprehension, literal comprehension, main idea comprehension, and derived meaning comprehension. These fundamental strategies comprise the core of reading comprehension as it is assessed in standardized tests. That level of engagement wasn’t as present when reading books with text,” said Gillam. “These results fall in line with the generally accepted belief that less structured activities, such as playing with toys or creating things with Play-Doh, elicit more productive language interactions between parent and child. These findings in no way diminish the importance of reading printed books, but incorporating interactions with wordless books is a way to build a more solid literacy foundation in children with developmental disabilities.”

How Can I Develop SMART IEP Goals for Behavior Problems? - 0 views

  • In a nutshell, my son is 7 years old, going into 2nd grade next year. He is diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, ADHD, and Anxiety Separation Disorder. He has been receiving Special Education Services since age four. His strengths are in Fluency/Comprehension and Spelling. His weaknesses are in the Personal & Social Development area. His placement is in a self-contained/ small class setting for Language Arts Literacy and Mathematics and in mainstream classes with adult support for all other subjects. I want to learn to create SMART IEP goals for his areas of weakness. I am having a hard time figuring out how to make to make behavior goals SMART – specific, measurable, use action words, realistic, and time-limited. I appreciate suggestions or examples.
