    What: 
    Speakers use several different communication techniques to help their listeners follow the logic of the discourse (conversation, teaching, etc.), as well as to hone in on key points of the discussion. Like all languages, American Sign Language speakers (and interpreters) use strategies to assist with listener comprehension. In the literature these are frequently referred to as 'expansion features' (Lawrence, Finton, Smith, etc.). The goal of the training will introduce you to the types of expansions that can be used, as well as when to integrate expansions into your educational interpretations. When:

    What:
    Connecting Math Concepts (CMC) is a research-validated developmental math program designed to be utilized with students in grades 1st - 6th. Corrective Mathematics (CM) is a research-validated, specialized math program designed to be utilized as a remedial/intervention program for those students in grades 4th - 12th who have not mastered basic math skills.  The program has four basic strands: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Both CMC and CM utilize explicit instruction to teach necessary pre-skills as well as basic math skills and strategies.  In this in-service, you will learn the rationale for CMC and CM, how to teach the pre-skills and strategy lessons embedded in the program, how to provide adequate practice and how to give the initial placement test, as well as on-going mastery assessments.

The course is taught by a team of trained NAMI family members and direct caregiver volunteers who know what it's like to have a child struggling with one of these brain disorders. Topics covered will be the 'no fault' approach, the biology of mental illness, getting an accurate diagnosis, an overview of treatment options, the impact on family, communication, crisis management, the system/agencies involved with your child, the importance of record keepng, and advocating and team building for you and your child.     The Montana Regional Education Service Area III (MRESA3) is offering an opportunity for professional development on the new revisions for Gifted and Talented in Montana. This workshop is designed to assist schools and districts to have the necessary components for their Gifted and Talented Program Plan to submit to OPI. The focus of this workshop is to equip the participant with strategies necessary to construct a gifted program that fits their district and population of students. Participants will be presented with the OPI framework for Gifted Education Programs and a Gifted Program Planning Template. Emphasis will be placed on identification of gifted and twice exceptional children as well as characteristics of sound curriculum for gifted students. Several teaching strategies that enable the teacher to differentiate the core curriculum to meet the needs of not only the gifted student but all students in the classroom will be presented. Participants will come away with the ability to complete a comprehensive plan for their district and/or develop a differentiated curriculum unit or lesson.

How Children's Social Competence Impacts Their Well-Being in Adulthood - Robert Wood Jo... - 0 views

  • A 20-year retrospective study, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and published in the July 2015 issue of the American Journal of Public Health, suggests that kindergarten students who are more inclined to exhibit “social competence” traits—such sharing, cooperating, or helping other kids—may be more likely to attain higher education and well-paying jobs. In contrast, students who exhibit weaker social competency skills may be more likely to drop out of high school, abuse drugs and alcohol, and need government assistance. This brief provides an overview and major findings from this study and implications for further action.

At this training school teams will be using school wide data to assess the effectiveness of school intervention efforts. Using student outcome performance data as well as process evidence and indicators to determine the school's current status in implementing RtI. Using information to develop action steps for each participating school to enhance and improve their RtI implementation. To receive maximum benefit from this training, participants need to bring school wide benchmark data for at least the current school year and, if possible, prior years as well.

  • Click here to registerWhat:Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 protects the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. Students eligible for special education services under the IDEA are typically also eligible for services under Section 504; additionally, students not eligible under IDEA may be covered by Section 504. Therefore, it is critical that advocates for students with disabilities understand protections under Section 504 as well as ways to deal with suspected violations.&nbsp; &nbsp; This webinar will provide an overview of the structure of the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Education, which enforces Section 504 with respect to entities that receive federal financial assistance from the Department. The Section 504 complaint process will be examined in depth, including who may file a complaint, when a complaint may be filed, how to file a complaint, what type of information is necessary to file a complaint and how to effectively present that information. Additional ways to address suspected violations will also be explained as well as strategies to effectively navigate procedural safeguards provided by the law. Department Announces New Effort to Strengthen Accountability for Students with Disabili... - 0 views

  • Today, the Department of Education announced new steps to help close the achievement gap for students with disabilities by moving away from a one-size-fits-all, compliance-focused approach to a more balanced system that looks at how well students are being educated in addition to continued efforts to protect their rights. While the Department has effectively ensured access to educational resources for students with disabilities, not enough attention has been paid to educational outcomes, which have not sufficiently improved. This is partly due to the fact that federal policy has focused more on procedural requirements and not enough on critical indicators like increasing academic performance or graduation rates for students with disabilities.
  • Today, the Department of Education announced new steps to help close the achievement gap for students with disabilities by moving away from a one-size-fits-all, compliance-focused approach to a more balanced system that looks at how well students are being educated in addition to continued efforts to protect their rights.
  • Since the current process of conducting on-site state compliance reviews has not focused enough on improving student outcomes, the Department will not be carrying out the visits scheduled for the 2012-13 school year to allow it time to develop a new and more effective system. However, the Department will continue to review annual performance reports as well as monitor state supervision systems.
