    What:
This picture exchange communication system (PECS) is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS pro-motes communication within a social context without lengthy prerequisite training. Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous request and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and comment-ing. An added attraction for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is the high proportion of children who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, plus attributes through pre-senter demonstration, video examples and role play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS for the individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities and/or limited commu-nication skills.

Supporting all Kids to Become Cool Kids: A Schoolwide Approach * June 11, 2012

Participants will be introduced to system wide approaches and practices to promote appropriate student behavior, teach social competence and establish consistent reactions to instances of unacceptable student behavior. When all staff consistently use an effective school wide approach, overall student behavior improves, time available for teaching and learning increases and the climate of the school community becomes more supportive and safe for both students and educators. All Kids Can be Cool Kids: Individual Plan and Approaches for Individual Students * June 12, 2012

Exemplary schools have well-designed, consistently implemented, and consistently improving systems for encouraging appropriate student behavior. However, even in these schools, there will be a small number of students needing more structure and support to be behaviorally successful. This workshop will address how to develop, implement, monitor, and adjust effective individual plans for these few "tough" kids for whom the school wide practices are not sufficient. Every Kid Can be a Cool Kid: Every Adult Can Make a Difference * June 13, 2012

In this workshop, participants will learn a variety of communication and interaction strategies designed to not only build relationships with students but increase the likelihood of student compliance with adult directions, the growth of overall social competence and the enhancement of the school environment as a place for adults to work and students to learn. REGION II CSPD Presents: S'cool Moves - Great Falls/Havre - Sept. 24-25 / Nov. 5-6, 2010 - 1 views

  • About S’cool Moves: S’Cool Moves is a research-based program developed by a reading specialist and an occupational therapist. S’Cool Moves brings together the best practices in educational theory, brain integration, developmental movement, and self-regulation techniques. The activities strengthen visual, auditory, sensory, and postural systems of the body. These systems need to be fully functioning for focus control and academic success. An important S’cool Moves concept requires children to assume responsibility for their behavior. When children monitor their own behavior, teachers have more time to teach and children have more time to learn. These activities flow seamlessly into the school day. Simply add sensory-based techniques to what you already use in your daily routines. Rather than TELLING children to focus, teach them HOW to focus.

REGION II CSPD Presents: When Great Minds Don't Think Alike, Good Things Happen - Havre... - 0 views

  • The old cliché “great minds think alike” couldn’t be more wrong. This session will dispel old myths about collaborations and introduce a new paradigm to create result-oriented teams. Several assessment instruments will be introduced to assist educators in determining the makeup of teams at their schools. Participants will be given tools they can use to build high functioning teams that produce measurable and sustainable results.

    What:
Social Communication Skills are vital to school and life success. There is compelling evidence that all children can benefit from direct instruction in specific social communication skills. Strategies that provide opportunities to model, reinforce and re-teach these important skills will be described and practiced. Techniques will be provided that involve families, which makes the impact of learning these skills very powerful.
