The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is holding a series of Affordable Care Act implementation forums throughout the country. We encourage you all to attend these broad policy-focused meetings, as they present a valuable opportunity to insert the consumer voice into the implementation process. Although registration for the Washington, DC session has been closed due to space constraints, it will also be webcast.
HHS will use these forums to provide information to stakeholders on the Affordable Care Act implementation process. Click here to register!What:Employment rates for people with disabilities are declining: people with ASD are among the least likely to be employed. In fact, only 15 percent of working aged adults with ASD are currently employed (Cameto et al, 2003). Effective interventions are clearly needed to improve employment rates for this population. SEDL and partners on the National Advisory Panel of the Vocational Rehabilitation Service Models for Individuals with ASD project have implemented a rigorous process for identifying programs that help increase competitive, long-term employment for people with ASD. Wildwood Programs was designated as an effective program in the summer of 2011. Located in Latham, New York, this program serves people with ASD needing employment-related supports. Wildwood Programs works collaboratively with individuals, families and businesses to increase individuals' independence and integration into the community. This session of Grand Rounds explored opportunities for optimal quality of life for individuals with disabilities. One in 6 adult Americans lives with a disability when defined by a limitation in function. Many are at higher risk for multiple chronic conditions, injuries, and increased vulnerability during disasters. Comparatively, people with disabilities are 4 times more likely to report their health to be fair/poor and 2.5 times more likely to have unmet health care needs than non-disabled peers. $400 billion is spent annually on disability-related health expenditures. Public health can help change this by promoting wellness and preventing disease in people with disabilities. CDC′s approach for a population who experiences diverse functional limitations is to assure that mainstream public health surveys, programs, and policies include people with disabilities across the lifespan, a method that can be modeled by state and federal programs. This powerful session of Grand Rounds explored public health opportunities for disease prevention, intervention and improvement to enable people to live well with functional limitations. We also highlighted accomplishments of partners and public health agencies in creating and modifying health programs to accommodate people with disabilities. Tentative future Grand Rounds topics include venous thromboembolism (VTE), HPV, teen pregnancy and immunization. Target Audience:
