    The Montana Autism Education Project is providing a limited number of FREE parent subscriptions for the Autism Training Solutions online autism training program. The subscriptions will begin in mid-December and will last for three months. For each individual subscription, the parent watches short online videos and then answers quizzes. Parents will have 24/7 access to 13 hours of online video lessons teaching: Antecedent Interventions

    Speakers use several different communication techniques to help their listeners follow the logic of the discourse (conversation, teaching, etc.), as well as to hone in on key points of the discussion. Like all languages, American Sign Language speakers (and interpreters) use strategies to assist with listener comprehension. In the literature these are frequently referred to as 'expansion features' (Lawrence, Finton, Smith, etc.).     The Family Voices National Center for Family and Professional Partnerships is hosting this webinar presented by Suzanne M. Bronheim, PhD of Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development. Suzanne will share findings from a 2010 research partnership with three Family-to-Family Health Information Centers (F2F HICs) to better understand how Hispanic/Latino families' and African American families' utilization of F2F HICs might be increased. This research project is based on a social marketing theory that suggests that people try new things if that "innovation" fits with their values and experience, seems to have an advantage over other approaches, is easy to use, can be tried and dropped if they don't like it and if others they know and trust are also aware of it and have used it. The project has used this framework to study how Hispanic/Latino and African American families prefer to receive information and how they view the F2F HICs as a resource. In addition, this project has studied similar issues for the social networks of families to learn how they view and access F2F HICs. Suzanne will be joined by staff of the F2F HICs that partnered in this project to share lessons learned and suggestions of how other F2F HICs can use this framework.

Girls on the Spectrum: Q&A with the Author of Aspergirls - Billings, Helena, Missoula, ... - 0 views

  • What:Is Asperger's syndrome really less common in girls and women, or are females just better than males at masking autistic symptoms? Rudy Simone, a San Francisco singer, writer and stand-up comic, didn't learn that she was on the autism spectrum until her mid-40s. Simone has Asperger's syndrome - a high-functioning form of autism that leads to social problems but no intellectual disabilities - which, like all forms of autism, appear much more commonly in boys than in girls. Ten times more men are believed to reside on the spectrum than women. But some experts think the real prevalence of Asperger's in girls may be much higher than believed, because girls tend to be far better than boys at concealing its symptoms, masking social problems and hiding the repetitive behaviors often associated with autism. So, many women go undiagnosed until middle age, along the way given other labels and therapies that do not address their real issues. To help make up for the lack of resources available to girls with Asperger's and their families, Simone wrote Aspergirls: Empowering Females with Asperger's Syndrome.     Healthy People 2020 contains almost 600 objectives for improving the health of all Americans, and 100 of those objectives relate to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN). To highlight some of these objectives and envision how the objectives might influence CYSHCN as they mature into adults, Genetic Alliance and Family Voices collaborated with the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Needs in the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) - which last year released Envision 2020, its strategic plan - to develop a family and consumer perspective on the national health promotion agenda and how it relates to CYSHCN and their families. By focusing on a small portion of the many community and organizational accomplishments related to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN) and systems of care, we hope to generate discussions of the gaps that remain, as well as equip families and providers to better advocate and care for CYSHCN and their families. This webinar will present Envision 2020 as well as the Consumer Perspective document and demonstrate how Healthy People 2020 objectives can influence and provide direction for improving systems and services for individuals with special healthcare needs.

    What:
    The Pyramid Model for Supporting Social Emotional Competence in Infants and Young Children is a conceptual framework of evidence-based practices developed by two national, federally-funded research and training centers: The Center for the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) and The Technical Assistance Center for Social Emotional Intervention (TACSEI). Most recently, TACSEI developed a family coaching approach for implementing the Pyramid Model with caregivers in homes. This approach was developed to support home visitors who are working with caregivers of infants and toddlers with or at-risk for disabilities. The approach focuses on supporting home visitors in the use of evidence-based family coaching strategies to enhance caregivers' capacity to promote their infant or toddlers' social emotional competence. This presentation will describe the family coaching approach to implementing the pyramid model. When:
