Seven-year-old Alex Rowe, who has a rare bleeding disorder, soon will have private health insurance again.  He is among more than 5 million Americans under the age of 19 with a pre-existing medical condition who cannot be denied coverage by insurance companies beginning as early as September under a key provision of the health care reform law. Covering consumers with pre-existing health problems has long been a point of contention and figured prominently in the national health reform debate.

The demonstration provides youth ages 14 through 25 with employment-related services and waivers of certain rules governing the Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance programs, including childhood disability benefits. The waivers augment existing financial incentives for beneficiaries to work.

Application deadline: April 9, 2010 The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), through a contract with Westover Consultants, Inc. (Westover), and AFYA, Inc. The AmeriGlide Achiever Scholarship is a program we offer to full time college students who use wheelchairs. Our goal is to help provide financial assistance for books or other school related supplies to deserving mobility challenged students. This $500 scholarship is available twice a year for the Fall and Spring Semesters.

One of the biggest hurdles for school districts wanting to buy new buses or contract with a company that provides buses with seat belts is cost, since federal law prohibits retrofitting older buses. School budgets are already faced with financial crunches. Although most administrators admit if seat belts make buses safer then they should be required, determining how to foot the bill is another matter altogether.

NEW YORK, NY (January 28, 2010) – Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, today announced the establishment of the Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Program, which will provide eligible camps with funding to offer scholarships to campers with autism. The program, funded by Norma and Malcolm Baker, began in Southern California and will now expand to the national level. Camps providing a qualified summer camp program to individuals with autism are encouraged to apply for a Camp Scholarship Fund through the Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Program. Applications will be accepted from now through March 1, 2010. Eligible camps will identify qualified campers who can demonstrate financial need and offer up to $5,000 in scholarship funds.

The nation’s top psychiatrist is calling on others in the profession to “transform what has become a culture of influence” surrounding financial relationships between physicians and drug companies. In a commentary in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association, the head of the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Thomas Insel, tackles head-on the perception that psychiatrists are tainted by their relationships with pharmaceutical manufacturers.

AG Bell recognizes that young families with a child who is deaf have extra financial pressures. We are pleased to offer the Family Scholarship Program for deserving families who have never attended an AG Bell Convention to access information and network with other families.

The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) offers financial awards for students, ages 6 to 19, to participate in after school, weekend or summer programs focused on developing skills in the arts or sciences. Programs can be offered through museums, nature centers, art or music centers, zoological parks, space and science camps, dance and theater studios, martial arts studios or any other program with a focus on the arts or sciences.

This fund offers financial assistance to young adults with Down syndrome who want to enroll in postsecondary programs or take classes that will help them with employment, independent living and life skills. What: The interest and use of health information technology (HIT) has greatly proliferated over the past decade, largely due to the increased focus the Federal Government has given to components of HIT, including electronic health records (EHRs), personal health records (PHRs), clinical decision support systems, and functionalities such as electronic prescribing and electronic lab ordering and results. However, for communities that are located in rural or underserved areas, the use of financial incentives will not be enough to implement an EHR. This “digital divide” has been a source of concern for both policymakers and consumer advocates. Autism Speaks Announces Second Annual Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Program New York, N.Y. (January 20, 2011) – Autism Speaks, North America's largest autism science and advocacy organization, today announced its second annual Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Program, which will offer up to $3000 in funds to eligible camps to go towards scholarships for financially disadvantaged children with autism.

The report from the National Disability Rights Network paints a glum picture of the jobs held by many Americans with disabilities that pay less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. In it, the authors charge that the segregated environments people with disabilities often work in are akin to institutions by “warehousing” people, limiting their opportunities and putting them in danger of abuse and neglect, all while providing financial gain for employers, some of whom earn six-figure salaries.

What: D.R.E.A.M. (Down syndrome research, education, advocacy in Montana) was started as a local support group for families of children with Down syndrome. The goal of D.R.E.A.M. is to provide financial grants to families in need of medical, educational and therapeutic assistance. It also helps to provide and distribute "New Parent Packets" to families with infants diagnosed with Down syndrome. The Bozeman Buddy Walk is the primary fundraiser for D.R.E.A.M. and a portion of the money raised will also go to the National Down Syndrome Society. The Buddy Walk® was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
