We live in a world of shrinking budgets, reduced staff and limited resources for Public Schools. Schools are fighting to survive let alone trying to educate our children. Add in the fact that 13% of the entire student age population has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and it’s no wonder that Special Education has once again become the scapegoat of the week. While eligibility, services and placement under an IEP are supposed to be based on need, and not money, that is not always the case. So the ability to motivate a School is one of the most important skills a parent can possess. Let’s start by defining what motivating a school in special education means. It means the ability to get the School on your side so that the IEP Team can tailor an IEP that meets your child’s unique needs and provides a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

SENG Model Parent Groups (SMPGs) bring together 10 to 20 interested parents of gifted and talented children to discuss such topics as motivation, discipline, stress management, and peer relationships.
The co-facilitators of the group, though they are knowledgeable about parenting and about educating gifted/talented children, do not attempt to give expert advice to families. Instead their facilitation provides a non-judgmental and nurturing atmosphere. The parents of the high-ability children are themselves a rich resource of information, and they are able to get fresh ideas from other parents and from A Parent's Guide to Gifted Children, the book around which the sessions are organized. The groups meet weekly for 8-10 weeks. By the end of the training you will understand:

Facilitated by Cindy Grossman, the group is open to males 14-18 years of age or enrolled in high school. Twenty years ago, telling a parent that their child suffered from Attention Deficit Disorder or Bipolar Disorder most often resulted in grief, denial, or even outrage. Today, studies show that parents diagnose their own children with mental disorders at a much higher rate than psychiatric experts. Schools are often caught between shrinking resources and increasing demands, as more children are identified as mentally disabled. Over two days, this workshop will help clear away some of the confusion and controversy surrounding mental health issues that most often affect school-age children. You will learn in practical terms, how a child with ADHD thinks, what motivates an oppositional child, which kids might actually have Bipolar Disorder, and which are simply moody. You will learn how psychiatric medications work to help, and sometimes to hurt. You will learn about the warning signs for violence in children and adolescents. Lastly, you will have a chance to ask advice about specific mental health issues in your school. In short, this workshop is designed to help you understand, teach, and advocate for your students with mental illness.
