ASL for beginners with opportunities for more experienced signers to improve their signing to make it more expressive. This class will be an introduction to the basic skills in production and comprehension of American Sign Language (ASL), including the manual alphabet and numbers. Instruction will include developing conversational ability, culturally appropriate behaviors and exposure to ASL grammar. Resources for continuing to improve sign language skills will be provided.

The Montana School for the Deaf and the Blind and the Outreach Staff in the Department for the Visually Impaired are hosting the annual workshop for persons providing instruction to braille students. The need for this training arose from the 2006 adoption of Montana New Rule 1: Assignment of persons providing instruction of Braille to students in the state of Montana. Topics for this year's workshop will include: a presentation hands-on workshop with Jan Zollinger - Teaching Braille Literacy Through the Arts, braille practice and techniques will be explored. Please bring transcription course materials to work on. This is a great opportunity for teachers to network and learn more about dots! When/Where:

Why: The Learning Weekend is a creative program that provides opportunities for families of sensory impaired children to learn about blindness and visual impairment, share their experiences with other families, and learn how to communicate more fully with one another in a warm, caring atmosphere. The focus of the weekend is to enhance each individual's personal knowledge of blindness and how it relates to the education and development of their child. Information in the form of informal workshops, group discussions (parent groups, kids groups, siblings groups, etc.) and hands‐on activities will be offered. Child care and recreation for the children (siblings included) will also be available at no charge. Families will be reimbursed for mileage at the current state rate.

The annual administration of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) will be conducted in Montana on Saturday, October 16, on the MSDB Campus in Great Falls. To register for the assessment please go to: http://www.usu.edu/taese/task12/EIPARegistration.cfm. The OPI will pay the registration fee for interpreters working in Montana schools every other year until the interpreter attains a score of 3.5 or higher. Interpreters wishing to have the OPI pay the registration fee should contact Frank Podobnik at fpodobnik@mt.gov for more information. Beginning July 1, 2011, all educational interpreters employed in Montana schools must have an EIPA score of 3.5 or higher. Those interpreters scoring between 2.5 and 3.4 can remain employed, but must have an educational plan in place to achieve the 3.5 standard within three years.

The Games for the Visually Impaired is held each spring at the Montana School for the Deaf & Blind campus in Great Falls. Athletes from around the state compete in track and field, gymnastics, gym activities, swimming and bowling. This is a competitive event for blind and low vision students ranging in age from 3-21. The VI Games is an uplifting and confidence-boosting weekend for participants, and the MSDB staff provides lots of support for the kids. Personnel from Malmstrom Air Force Base assist athletes in their individual events. Volunteers are willing to swim and run with athletes. Any student with a visual impairment is welcome to participate in the event. When/Where:
