Tools For Success: Working With Youth With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) in the Juvenile Justice System About This Program This program is designed for you to learn at your own pace. You may view each module sequentially, or in any order you wish. Click on the Modules tab at the top of the screen; double click on the module you wish to view. And how do I avoid burn-out? This session provides a starting point to answer these questions. Many parents, therapists, retired school district staff, and others routinely ask me how to become a professional advocate. Of course, there is no One Right Way to do this, no certification, no road map. . . and so the goal is to help participants consider the next steps, to provide them with some information about what has worked for some professional advocates, and to connect them with resources. This presentation will cover the following issues, among others: role of the advocate, sources/types of training, work environments, attracting clients, advocate's intake and next steps, maintaining records and confidentiality, billing, pro bono work, the importance of boundaries, and networking resources. The presentation will also reference COPAA's Voluntary Code of Ethics for advocates.

RESA4U and Region IV CSPD are partnering to present a Region IV Summer Institute. Registration for the three-day Institute is $100 per person and housing is available at the UM-Western campus dormitories. Judy Wood, author of Teaching the Hard to Reach, will be the keynote speaker for Monday, June 11th. Judy focuses on building a successful intervention system for at-risk students or students with unique needs within general education settings. On Tuesday, June 12 and Wednesday, June 13, educators will be able to choose from a variety of course offerings designed to enhance classroom instruction. One post-baccalaureate credit is available for attending the conference for three days. A second credit, requiring extended study, will be offered as well. The cost for each credit is $115 and is paid directly to UM-Western. These credits can be used for certificate renewal through OPI; participants would need to check with their school districts for approval regarding PIR or lane changes. When:

Individuals who have both mental illness (MI) and intellectual/developmental disability (IDD) present clinical challenges to professionals as well as to the systems that attempt to provide care to these individuals. Clinicians frequently have difficulty in appropriately identifying a mental health disorder, even when one exists, in persons who have limited verbal skills. This six-hour workshop is designed to provide the participant with clinical information that will help in the assessment, diagnosis and support strategies necessary to provide appropriate care for this underserved group of people. The participant will learn how mental health signs and symptoms are manifested in persons with a dual diagnosis as compared to those with only mental illness. The department's office of special education said Thursday it will spend up to $5 million on the creation of the Center to Support the Development of Effective Educators to Serve Students with Disabilities.
