What: The 4th annual National Brain Injury Employment Conference, Building Bridges, will bring together all the stakeholders in the brain injury and employment fields—survivors, veterans, family members and professionals—for an interactive and inspirational two days of learning and networking. “One of the biggest adjustments brain injury survivors make is often around employment. With support and retraining, survivors can open new doors to success,” said Conference Chair and Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer Nancy Freeman. Job hunters and professionals will discover useful tips on getting through school, accessing effective tools for employment and learning strategies for job seeking from nationally recognized experts. This conference will focus on finding purpose after brain injury and attendees will leave with insight into innovative employment strategies and have the opportunity to network with national professionals.

What:This webinar will present augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies and devices appropriate for people with communication impairments resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Survivors of TBI may have cognitive, linguistic, and motor speech impairments that may affect their use of AAC strategies and devices. Appropriate AAC strategies and devices will be discussed as well as assessment and intervention techniques across rehabilitation and recovery stages.    Learner Outcomes: 1. Participants will explain the importance of using AAC during early stages of rehabilitation from TBI.2. Participants will describe two applications of AAC suitable for the early stages of rehabilitation from TBI.3. BrainLine is a national multimedia project offering information and resources about preventing, treating, and living with TBI. BrainLine includes a series of webcasts, an electronic newsletter, and an extensive outreach campaign in partnership with national organizations concerned about traumatic brain injury. BrainLine serves anyone whose life has been affected by TBI. That includes people with brain injury, their families, professionals in the field, and anyone else in a position to help prevent or ameliorate the toll of TBI.

My son Ian had a lack of oxygen to his brain at 9 weeks of age and spent 3 weeks in the hospital. Perhaps it was caused by a seizure, perhaps a near-SIDS incident, but we are not sure of the cause. He had a resulting brain injury, with “other developmental disabilities” of autism, blindness, communication impairment, severe cognitive impairment, seizure disorder, and other issues. The brain injury was in 1989, so he is now 23 years old. As you can imagine, this incident devastated our family, at first mostly because we had no clue what to do, what it meant for any of us, how to help him grow, and how much it would change our lives.

Click here to register for this event What: Montana state government is hosting a one-day disability employment seminar for state employees and others interested in promoting employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Jim Marks, Director, Disability Transition Programs, Department of Public Health and Human Services, will kick off the event at 9 a.m. The featured keynote speaker, Lois McElravy, will speak from her personal experience illustrating how the complexities of brain injury cause confusion and chaos with the simplest of tasks, like writing notes and making lists. Participants will gain a better understanding of how they can partner with employees with disabilities to identify accommodations needed to create a productive work environment. Other sessions include small-group exercises based on complex workplace issues, a presentation on reasonable accommodations by Anne Hirsch, Job Accommodation Network, a presentation on People without Limits, by Paul Gelderloos, People without Limits, and a panel of local experts will address commonly asked questions through locally developed case studies. KALISPELL- The Flathead County Sheriff's Department is the first in the state to offer a bracelet that can track missing people that suffer from Alzheimer's Disease, Autism, Down's Syndrome and brain injuries. The Glacier Pilot Club told the Flathead County Sheriff's Department about Project Lifesaver earlier this year. It's a program that consists of a person wearing a medical bracelet that sends off a specific frequency that can be detected by using two antennas.
