Cell Vocabulary Review Game | Serendip Studio - 0 views

  •
This game helps students to enjoy reviewing vocabulary related to cells, organelles, and the plasma membrane.  Each card in the deck has a target vocabulary word and two related taboo words that the student may not use as he/she gives clues so the other students in his/her small group can guess the target word.  Many students have trouble learning the substantial new vocabulary required for biology, and this game lets students have fun while reinforcing their understanding of key terms.  The first file below provides the master copy for creating the card decks for this game, and the second file below provides the teacher notes, including instructions for playing the game.

Macromolecules Jeopardy | Serendip Studio - 0 views

  •
This game reviews introductory chemistry, including organic compounds and chemical reactions. After you open the game in the PowerPoint attachment, click on slideshow and then view show to operate in full screen mode.  Clicking on a number in the gameboard brings you to a question. When that question has been answered click on the yellow box in the lower right corner and you'll be brought back to the gameboard screen.  Spaces for questions that have already been answered will now appear blank, just like on the TV show.  One way to organize this game is to divide your class into groups of 3-4 students, with a spokesperson for each group and a system for rotating among the groups.  Each group in turn can choose a category and point value, and you will show the question.  The group has a set time to decide on their answer.  If their answer is correct, they earn the points.  If their answer is not correct, the first spokesperson for another group to raise their hand can answer the question to earn the points (with the obvious exception of the true/false items).

Disease Along the River: A Case Study and Cholera Outbreak Game - National Center for C... - 0 views

  •
This case study centers on an active teaching game that simulates a cholera outbreak among five villages along a river, similar to the Haitian outbreak of 2010. By enacting the behaviors of fictional villagers, students learn how trade, travel, sanitation practices and geographic location contribute to the spread of diarrheal disease. Documenting various contamination events of village water supplies allows students to trace the progression of the disease and illustrates how adequate sanitation facilities provide protection against the bacteria Vibrio cholera. Originally designed for an undergraduate upper-division biology course focusing on the epidemiology of diseases, the simulation is also appropriate for microbiology and public health courses, as well as lower division undergraduate biology courses and high school. Biology or epidemiology components of the case study can be highlighted depending on the emphasis of the course being taught. The game can be completed within a 45- to 60-minute class period. Playing cards are available from the Supplemental Materials tab; detailed instructions are found in the teaching notes.

Bringing Home More than a Medal - National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science - 0 views

  •
This case study was inspired by the Zika virus outbreak that occurred around the time of the 2016 Olympic Games. Many athletes were fearful of attending because of the link between Zika virus infection and microcephaly in infants. This concern, however, ran contrary to reports suggesting that the risk of athletes and other travelers becoming infected was remarkably low. Jessica, a fictional Olympic equestrian and the main character of the case, was unfortunately very unlucky and contracted Zika virus near the time of the Games. She ended up enduring negative health complications likely as a consequence of the infection.  This case was designed to be implemented in the nervous system unit of a human biology or anatomy and physiology course. The case is also appropriate for microbiology and public health courses.   Students are expected to have foundational knowledge in viral life cycles, and will explore disruptions in neurotransmission as well as abnormal fetal brain development.

Cross-Dressing or Crossing-Over? - National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science - 0 views

  •
In this "clicker case," students learn about sex determination, meiosis, and chromosomal "crossing over" through the story of Santhi Soundararajan, an athlete from Kathakkurichi, India, who was stripped of a medal at the 2006 Asian Games after failing to pass a sex test. The case is called a clicker case because it combines the use of student personal response systems (clickers) with case teaching methods and formats. The case itself is a PowerPoint presentation (~2 MB) shown in class that is punctuated by questions students respond to using their clickers. It can be adapted for use without these technologies. Developed for an introductory biology class for both majors and non-majors, the case could also be used in an anatomy and physiology course or an endocrinology course.
