Cell Vocabulary Review Game | Serendip Studio - 0 views

  •
This game helps students to enjoy reviewing vocabulary related to cells, organelles, and the plasma membrane.  Each card in the deck has a target vocabulary word and two related taboo words that the student may not use as he/she gives clues so the other students in his/her small group can guess the target word.  Many students have trouble learning the substantial new vocabulary required for biology, and this game lets students have fun while reinforcing their understanding of key terms.  The first file below provides the master copy for creating the card decks for this game, and the second file below provides the teacher notes, including instructions for playing the game.

In this lesson, students consider the case of a young doctor hired by a U.S. pharmaceutical company to test a new antibiotic in Nigeria during a meningitis epidemic. Students work through a Decision-Making Framework in small groups, in which they identify the ethical question, determine which facts are known or unknown, consider the values of different stakeholder groups, generate possible solutions, and then make and justify a decision about the case.

The PBL Clearinghouse contains problems from a wide variety of disciplines. As the problems and supporting materials are covered by the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License, you are welcome to borrow and adapt these problems for your classroom. Because these files are open sourced, your students may search and discover the teaching notes and solutions. We encourage you to make changes, adapt the problems to your specific goals and classroom contexts and thereby discourage your students from "borrowing" solutions or otherwise circumventing your instructional goals.

The article "Data back ban of artificial trans fats" (10.8 readability score) summarizes new research showing that banning artificial trans fats in foods could reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Students can focus on details reported in the article, follow connections to earlier articles about trans fats research, engage in a classroom discussion of related scientific and government policy questions and make connections between the science of food and their health. Students can also conduct their own experiments to analyze foods for fats and then research the types of fats within different foods to make recommendations about dietary consumption.

The article "The difference makers" (10.9 readability score) gives an overview of transposons, or "jumping genes," and how these bits of genetic material have affected genetic variety and evolution in humans and other organisms. Students can focus on details reported in the article, follow connections to earlier articles about transposons and human evolution, explore crosscurricular connections to other major science topics, and construct a phylogenetic tree of primate evolution based on the locations of retroviral sequence insertions in chromosome 21

Three Cases from the Membrane Files - National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science - 0 views

  •
This PowerPoint-driven case study presents three different stories, each of which explores an aspect of membranes. The first (The Exploding Fish) covers diffusion, specifically addressing the question of why animal cells explode in freshwater but fish do not, and differences between saltwater and freshwater fish. The second case (The Pleasurable Poison) is designed to show that alcohol can slip across membranes and also highlights some of the problems of ingesting this toxin. The third case (The Dangerous Diet) explores a weight-loss drug, DNP, and how it operates in mitochondrial membranes. The first of these case studies also includes a number of "clicker" questions. These cases were originally designed for a semester-long, introductory biology course for non-majors, and instructors can choose to use one or all of the cases to suit their course.

Dynamic Learning Maps Essential Elements in Science - 0 views

  •
    n. As such, this set of Essential Elements addresses a small number of science standards, representing a breadth, but not depth, of coverage across the entire standards framework. The purpose of the DLM Essential Elements is to build a bridge from the content in the general education science framework to academic expectations for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. This version of the Essential Elements will provide content for science assessments for at least the next two years. The DLM Science Consortium intends to develop a learning map based on research about how students learn science content and engage in scientific and engineering practices in the next phase of the project. Revisions will be made when the science map is complete, at which time we anticipate the EEs will be aligned to the map with revisions and additions as appropriate.
