I am with Jon at the Oracle Industry Connect this week. Of course I have enjoyed connecting with those I know, but I must admit it is also enjoyable meeting people from other industries like life sciences, healthcare, financial services, insurance and education. Sometimes I forget that there are industries other than hospitality. I have enjoyed meeting these people from other industries, but it is amazing how they all want to really know what the hotel industry is all about. When your business is about where people eat, drink and sleep I guess it does sound a bit more intriguing than the banking industry. It has been an enjoyable two days and no matter how often we interact with others in the industry, nothing beats face to face. There was a great crowd from the hospitality space with a lot of the higher ups from the industry attending. It was nice seeing so many making time to come to this event. I thank Oracle for inviting me and after the events Hospitality Upgrade put on last week I am very thankful I just get to attend, not having to speak nonstop. Thank you, Jon, for making this week's Siegel Sez easier as I sit in my hotel room in Washington, D.C., at 5:30 in the morning trying to be creative after a night of eating and drinking at the Smithsonian Castle.

Kohl's has been increasingly focused on omnichannel retailing in the past year, beyond introducing initial buy online pickup in store functionality in May. Earlier this month, Kohl's announced a slew of special omnichannel holiday shopping features. Kohl's also was among the first retailers to offer an Apple Watch app in April. In January, the retailer unveiled its "Greatness Agenda," a broad effort to maximize omnichannel customer engagement that is based on an Oracle Retail platform.

Tools for leveraging at-the-table mobility to gain efficiency in the hospitality sector have been available for many years, according to Tim Pincelli, global segment leader, restaurants for Oracle Hospitality; however, today's solutions offer what he calls "a new recipe in portability, design, and functionality." "With modern solutions," Pincelli explains, "service staff is empowered to deliver an improved guest experience with a multipurpose table-side and mobile solution that combines a size-friendly tablet with ample screen real estate, full-shift battery life, and full functionality - as if the staff member was at a fixed workstation."

Oracle (www.oracle.com) introduced the MICROS Workstation 6, using Microsoft Windows Embedded 8.1 and the latest Intel Atom processor. It works in concert with mobile, cloud and social media to deliver consistent, integrated content across multiple sources, and can offer guest recommendations, special promotion rollouts and more. The Workstation 6 incorporates the design elements of a mobile POS in an ergonomic, all-in-one design with a 15.6-inch-wide HD touchscreen, and a spill and impact resistant enclose. Additionally, it can be mounted on a stand that allows staff to adjust the screen angle or swivel it for guest to view. The integrated, three-track magnetic card reader allows for 3DES or AES encryption upon swiping, and includes six USB ports for attaching printers, scanners, cash drawers and more.

Merron's experience is not unusual, says Dr. Peter Agel, Global Segment Leader -Hotels for Oracle Hospitality. But Agel believes that the future is brighter. One of Oracle's main goals, he says is "to reduce complexity and cost by providing cloud based services." Such services, coupled with increasing consolidation in the hotel technology industry, leads Agel to believe that in the future hotel technology will be far more standardized. Agel knows something about consolidation first hand. In September, 2014, Oracle acquired MICROS, one of the leading providers of POS systems used by over half a million hotels, restaurants and other operations. Taking one of the biggest POS providers and marrying it to one of the world's leaders in business software has the potential to create products that will ease the minds of many a tortured CFO.
