El gran volumen de información y la velocidad con la que se genera en línea son sus puntos de partida. Se trata de un informe dinámico y en evolución, abierto al futuro, que invita a los profesionales a participar en los debates de su foro online y recoger cuestiones claves para próximas reuniones. En él se han identificado cinco tendencias clave que cambiarán el entorno de la información: las nuevas tecnologías expandirán, y a su vez, limitarán el acceso a la información; la educación en línea democratizará y modificará el aprendizaje global; los límites de la privacidad y la protección de datos se redefinirán; las sociedades hiperconectadas se harán más visibles y, por último, la economía global de la información se transformará.

This is an open textbook that Tony Bates is writing as part of the BC Open Textbook initiative. The topic is Teaching in the Digital Age. It's interesting as it's a work in progress and Tony has been blogging parts of the book to gain feedback as he is writing it. It's a topic that I am interested in. I do think it could use a substantial amount of copy editing, which it may yet receive, as may inconsistencies jump out at me in the TOC alone. I will be continuing to monitor this one as it develops further into his finished book.

"This Report reflects the Administration's continued resolve to encourage and maintain adequate and effective IPR protection and enforcement worldwide." The report focuses on trade, copyright infringements, and the need to protect the products of creativity. The report discusses the subject globally. It is an extensive report that highlights the increased awareness of copyright protections and cooperation among different countries to legislate against infringements. Very helpful to see the scope of intellectual property rights concerns.

"We live in an age of information overload. While many of us find ourselves inundated with vast amounts of data daily, our fast-paced society also requires us to make more rapid decisions." A very short blog post that reminds us to slow down and focus. It doesn't add much new to the conversation but the reminders are helpful, especially the one about multitasking. It truly is a myth.

Interesting read! 4 ways to retain your brain to handle information overload

BC Open Textbooks is an initiative started by the province of British Columbia in Canada. It is open textbooks adapted and created by BC faculty. It's difficult to tell which texts are complete and ready for use as Tony Bates incomplete text that I created another post about appears on the same page with complete texts (eg Chemistry, Biology Geography.) All the texts can be modified through Creative Commons licensing. This project has been creating concern for publishers who stand to loose business in BC and other provinces if the texts get adopted outside of BC. Initially, the project was focused on creating "a collection of open textbooks aligned with the top 40 highest-enrolled subject areas in the province. A second phase was announced in the spring of 2014 to add 20 textbooks targeting trades and skills training." Initially they looked for existing Creative Commons books they could adapt and they adapted 8 textbooks. From inception to fall 2014, 2244 students have used their open texts for a savings of $353,000 or $157 per student. The aim is to reach 200,000 students annually so they are at .6% and save each $900-$1500/year, still quite a way to go. Wondering how much this project is costing taxpayers, I googled and found this article http://www.ousa.ca/2013/04/24/textbooks/ which claims $600k-$1m/year. So the government has spent $1.2 - $2 million to save students $350k over the past two years. Still a long way to go to break even. In summary, 65 texts published, 45 adoptions, 2244 student users, for a savings of $353k to date. If this was a traditional textbook publishing company, they'd soon be out of business if they weren't already.

You are so, so lucky. Here in South Africa, we are regressing, not even looking at online textbooks, but trying to reduce textbooks to only one per subject. The textbook crisis: http://mg.co.za/article/2013-08-23-00-south-africas-hidden-textbook-crisis and the regressive "solution" http://mg.co.za/article/2014-10-10-single-textbook-option-slammed. It is very frustrating for me, knowing all the possibilities, but not having any agency to get through to the authorities here.Llibraries are also failing horribly in advocating for the solutions that ARE available.

Debo decir que, muy a mi pesar, los contenidos de la misma presentan numerosas infracciones ortográficas, que demeritan la calidad de la propuesta ante los ojos tradicionales. Aún así, es algo que se puede subsanar. Las grandes universidades, y las medianas y las pequeñas, pueden jugar un papel de suma importancia en el movimiento de Acceso Abierto, especialmente para el caso de las ciencias sociales y humanidades. La universidad era una institución moribunda en el siglo XIX, y gracias a ella las ciencias sociales se instalaron en el mainstream académico, tal como enseña Wallerstein; en el siglo XXI una universidad revitalizada puede impulsar lo que ya se considera revolución científica.

This article gives an overview about the phenomenon MOOCs and some related topics as for example the costs and why students attend MOOCs.

This article is not only about open education or open learningm, but about trends in tech that trainee teachers should be aware of. One of them is the MOOC trend. What is missing is the OER trend and its implications.

This is exactly what I need to learn as I develop our home school. I would be grateful for more insights.

This blog post gives a short but important overview about what is a MOOC. The author also gives an insight into the MOOC design model showing what to consider when planning a MOOC. What is even more interesting is the fact, that this post is just a chapter of an open textbook "Teaching in in Digital Age".

The internet has is and will continue to change how we educate our children but we will still be using university's perhaps a younger student population will emerge as access instantaneous, making learning faster , less time required to achieve a high school level.
