The social networking site Facebook is large enough to have attracted more than its share of scams, hoaxes, and malware. The same cautions should apply when using Facebook as when reading regular e-mail or outside web sites: Don't believe everything you read.

You are assuming that Facebook is more reliable that hackers and hoaxes, you have to think again. We are already exposed more than you imagine and we can not do anything about it. Your personal data is uploaded and even if you want to stop and delete your self from the net it will remain.

Due to rising prices of printed textbooks, majority of higher universities are working with publishing companies to come up with a plan. Check out the program they have come with.

This model of education would be very difficult to establish but it will save a huge amount of trees all over the world. I PADs as full text books for students is on of my favorite.

Companies and other electronic sites are collecting our private information when we are browsing online. They keep track on the things we buy and things we may search. We need to protect our Internet privacy while surfing the Web and monitor the information our computer sends out. Another option you can do is to control your personal information online and offline. Although IP addresses can provide a fairly detailed summary of our computer, Web browser cookies provide a more complete profile of a user's preferences. Three types of cookies are sent out when we surf the Internet. The three types of cookies are session cookie, persistent cookie, and third-party ad-serving cookie. I had heard about it through a computer specialist a few years back. Since then, we try to be more careful but I think that if someone wants information from you the wil get it anyway.

The Tools you can find here might also be valuable for assignments in MOOCs and they help you deal with OPEN DATA and OPEN KNOWLEDGE. Some technical expertise is helpful to make use of much of it.

Many interesting charts and data of the global internet use, access, and contributions

Atlas, publications, charts and tables of global information and internet geographies and impacts on information access, information production and information distribution, done over a four year period by Oxford Information Institute. Findings, data, and publication will be published in Open Access formats and platforms. The website is simple but contains lots of information relevant to the topics in Stanford. There are links to external related publications about information geography, access, distribution and production. Very good website. Some limitations include: bias from the two developers and producers as well as institution itself, unknown (not identified) contributors and sponsors.

A very valuable collection demonstrating how economic, political, cultural and linguistic ties impact the flow of knowledge is and information. Of course, such charts do little to explain, why this happens and where a more even distribution of knowledge is desirable. Also, the data that lies behind the visualisations is not always open. Especially vauable are the links to the data collections that are accessible.

Teachers are discovering the value of imparting media-literacy skills, from critical analysis of news programs, commercials, and films to basic design and video-production techniques.

This is an excellent video summarizing all the skills and necessity of them in a participatory culture. Everyone is spending more and more time in the multimedia world these days, especially the youth, who can be considered the most vulnerable. An ability to perceive all the information we are getting through a critical lens is profound, as is an ability to dissect and understand the logic of multimedia. Learning the tricks of graphics, cinema, music studies (collectively called "communication studies"), young people learn to understand and create media, find new ways to express themselves efficiently in an ever-changing world and supplement the traditional ("written") curriculum, which is behind the needs of today's man. The point is illustrated nicely by George Lucas, founder of The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF): "Everybody is affected by this, and it should be taught in school." I agree 100%.

Re-thinking communication skills is absolutely essential for all educators, since much of the communication students are faced with during a day comes in the shape of different kinds of media. But the result of this is also that we need to address the fact that not all educators are necessarily equipped to teach about media because it's rarely included in teacher's programs (especially if you were trained twenty or thirty years ago). So the video makes a lot of good points about media-literacy and hopefully our educational systems will make sure that educators are given the tools to include this in their classrooms.

This is a really short, yet informative introductory video about citizen science - a really good resource to give to someone who has never heard of it, or does not have a clear idea of what citizen science really is. In two minutes it covers everything - from the idea behind it, to project examples and how to make citizen science work for you, and even historical background of the movement. It is definitely a good place to start if you are interested in learning more about any of these aspects of citizen science. As a fan of citizen science AND public understanding of science, I would definitely recommend to watch this video TO ANYONE. A great collection of thoughts, lists and posters that can be very helpful in teaching digital literacy and digital citizenship in the classroom. There are so many aspects of digital citizenship to consider and copyright is one of those things that I think many educators forget to discuss, but it's so very important to understand.

Digital citizenship is a very large topic and it encompasses so much, including digital literacy. Every day it is more and more important for people to develop critical lenses regarding what is digitally available. With so much out there, I think part of being a good digital citizen is to have a critical lens to filter all the information.
