A fascinating and meta conversation about the notion of reality, truthiness, and attribution. David Shields remixes works from hundreds of other authors (without attribution) to interrogate these topics and more. From Wikipedia: Reality Hunger consists of 618 numbered passages divided into twenty-six chapters. Approximately half of the book's words come from sources other than the author. Because of Random House lawyers, attribution for the quotes is given in a fine print appendix at the end of the book, but with Shields's encouragement to cut those pages from the book so as to preserve the book's intended disorienting effect

Inkscape is a very handy drawing tool that can be used for a variety of applications including signs, posters, page layout and other options when a photo editor really isn't the right tool.

It's one of those almost invisible infrastructures that we start to notice only once they go extinct. A place where all people can get access to all knowledge that can be collected seemed for a long time a dream beyond reach - dependent on the limited resources of rich patrons or unstable budgets of (welfare) states.

The competencies discussed by Dr. Jenkins in the Module 3 video, for those who are interested, are: "Play - the capacity to experiment with your surroundings as a form of problem-solving Performance - the ability to adopt alternative identities for the purpose of improvisation and discovery Simulation - the ability to interpret and construct dynamic models of real world processes Appropriation - the ability to meaningfully sample and remix media content Multitasking - the ability to scan one's environment and shift focus as needed to salient details. Distributed Cognition - the ability to interact meaningfully with tools that expand mental capacities Collective Intelligence - the ability to pool knowledge and compare notes with others toward a common goal Judgment - the ability to evaluate the reliability and credibility of different information sources Transmedia Navigation - the ability to follow the flow of stories and information across multiple modalities Networking - the ability to search for, synthesize, and disseminate information Negotiation - the ability to travel across diverse communities, discerning and respecting multiple perspectives, and grasping and following alternative norms."

Paper Conclusions: While sources differ in their precise estimates of the economic potential of Open Data, all are agreed that it is potentially very large. In countries which were early movers in Open Data there is already evidence of significant businesses having developed to exploit that potential. Leading governments have recognised that their role is not simply to publish data - they are supporting the whole value chain of the use of data through four distinct though interlinked roles. Other governments should consider how to use their Open Data to enhance economic growth, and should put in place strategies to promote and support the use of data in this way.

While we are talking about (open) education, let us look for the handbook. Part I, Chapter 7: "E-learning - an introduction"

It is an essential document for educators and librarians. The Handbook focuses on issues of knowledge and learning and teaching and leading its readers to a mode of considering education as revisiting learners' prior knowledge into the mode of thinking and understanding through the study of primary sources. After Biggs and Moore, the authors of the Handbook view students as individuals who actively construct their knowledge and learning as a process that involves a process of individual transformation. The document touches all the essential questions of education including motivation and deep approach to studying. curriculum design, the use of technologies in learning opportunities and other.

The first time I heard of Diego's case, I couldn't believe it and yet it was shared by the EFF, an authoritative source. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that someone would want to sue over the sharing of his thesis. I didn't even thought you could have copyright on a thesis and how do you even make money on a thesis? Especially when it is said that a large majority of all thesis are never looked up more than twice (by the author and the director). This person should be ashamed.

I liked this article on the tension between indigenous knowledge, which wants to be closed and contained, and open knowledge which wants to be freely accessible to all. It highlights the need to find a balancing middle path between the two trajectories. This issue speaks to the sources found in Additional resources in Module 1.
