BIODIVERSITY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS IMPLICATIONS FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF SOU... - 1 views

  •
Traditional Healers Organization For Africa: " Biopiracy and Indigenous Traditional Medicine Knowledge The blatant plunder of indigenous knowledge and genetic resources in South Africa continues unhindered and without State monitoring. Since 1997, We have been monitoring private and public enterprises (or their intermediaries) who are actively collecting, sampling and acquiring traditional knowledge for the development of pharmaceutical products. What concerns us is that international organizations are entering South Africa to carry out this research. Not even the World Health Organization are free of scrutiny in this regard. "Biopiracy" refers to the use of intellectual property laws (patents, plant breeders' rights) to gain exclusive monopoly control over genetic resources that are based on the knowledge and innovation of indigenous peoples. Biopiracy and bioprospecting don't just happen in the field ; biopiracy is even more likely to take place in the laboratories of industry and academia, and in patent offices in the cities not even in South Africa."

The Lyon Declaration - 3 views

  •
"Increased access to information and knowledge, underpinned by universal literacy, is an essential pillar of sustainable development. Greater availability of quality information and data and the involvement of communities in its creation will provide a fuller, more transparent allocation of resources."
  •
"In this context, a right to information would be transformational. Access to information supports development by empowering people, especially marginalised people and those living in poverty, to: - Exercise their civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. - Be economically active, productive and innovative. - Learn and apply new skills. - Enrich cultural identity and expression. - Take part in decision-making and participate in an active and engaged civil society. - Create community-based solutions to development challenges. - Ensure accountability, transparency, good governance, participation and empowerment. - Measure progress on public and private commitments on sustainable development. The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz : Brian Knappenberger : Free Download... - 7 views

  •
The story of Aaron Swartz, incredible programmer and activist for internet rights, open access and open knowledge. Good documentary to learn a little more about the open access movement, see some important figures (Tim Berners-Lee, Lawrence Lessig, etc.) and the fight against the SOPA bill. A big part of the movie is about his personal life and legal battle over copyright infringement. Creative Commons license: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

I saw it a couple of weeks ago. It is a heart-rending story, very well put together. The issues it raises are very serious, and the cost of losing such a brilliant young genius to the world is immeasurable. It is a wake up call of magnitude. Thanks for posting this link.
  •
It's such an informative and well-made documentary. After watching it I was so excited to know more about Open Access, which is one of the reasons I attend this online course. Thanks for sharing.
  •
Wow, this documentary can really have an effect, it's heartwarming to hear that the topic of this documentary is one of the reason you took this course! At the end of the movie I was half angry at the unjust prosecution of Swartz and the injustices on the access to knowledge and half uplifted, motivated to get more active on OA, OK and internet rights.
  •
Although my interest was sparked by great open source projects, like R and PLOS, this documentary was a great inspiration a few weeks ago to relight that flame and join this course. Great to see how Aaron Schwartz still continues to be of inspiration to the open source community. Now and then I also love to go back reading stuff from his blog, e.g. his view on how to be productive (http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/productivity)

For the Copyright section I recommend to watch this documentary: The Internet's Own Boy depicts the life of American computer programmer, writer, political organizer and Internet activist Aaron Swartz. It features interviews with his family and friends as well as the internet luminaries who worked with him.

Although IASCP is devoted to the study of institutions for the management of environmental resources (such as forests, oceans and land) held or used collectively by communities, its WWW site provides a wealth of information for scholars of common pool resources in diverse disciplines. It also seeks to allow an exchange of scholarship between members, researchers, students and other CPR practitioners. Publishes quarterly journal called Common Property Resource Digest. WWW site includes: (a) Searchable CPR bibliographies (see entry for Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis) (b) abstracts of papers from past IASCP conferences (c) links to online articles, bibliographies and information sources on common pool resources (d) information on IASCP conferences and membership.

The future of publishing - 1 views

This video was prepared by the UK branch of Dorling Kindersley Books and produced by Khaki Films (http://www.thekhakigroup.com/). Originally meant solely for a DK sales conference, the video was such a hit internally that it is now being shared externally. We hope you enjoy it (and make sure you watch it up to at least the halfway point, there's a surprise!).

Dissimenation, Open Access, DOAJ list, etc. discussed in one resource - 1 views

  •
This is a great resource if you are interested in how things like publication strategy, data management, dissimenation, Open Access, DOAJ list, etc. discussed and applied in the Netherlands at one of the top research universities. This is a blog. It has been written and maintained voluntarily by a bibliometrician, who has been working at Wageningen University Library over 7 years. Posts and themes are in English They are very well written and structured. At the bottom part of the Home page you can find Categories, Recent Comments, Keywords, and Archive - they are very well linked and make search and navigation easy. Another bonus is that every post/article supplied with international and local references, which gives this source depth.

A Day Without Media - 0 views

  •
This study conducted by the International Center for Media & the Public Agenda (ICMPA), documented the experiences of 200 students at the University of Maryland as they "unplugged" from all media for 24 hours. The results were simultaneously astounding and totally predictable. Their top five findings were: 1. Students use literal terms of addiction to characterize their dependence on media. 2. Students hate going without media. In their world, going without media, means going without their friends and family. 3. Students show no significant loyalty to a news program, news personality or even news platform. Students have only a casual relationship to the originators of news, and in fact don't make fine distinctions between news and more personal information. They get news in a disaggregated way, often via friends. 4. 18-21 year old college students are constantly texting and on Facebook-with calling and email distant seconds as ways of staying in touch, especially with friends. 5. Students could live without their TVs and the newspaper, but they can't survive without their iPods.
