The Breakthrough Prizes were founded by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, and Yuri and Julia Milner. Selection committees for the prizes comprise previous Breakthrough Prize laureates, who choose the winners from a list of candidates obtained during the nomination period. The Breakthrough Prize Foundation currently is accepting nominations for the 2020 Breakthrough Prizes in Fundamental Physics, Life Sciences, and Mathematics. Now in its eighth year, the competition will honor top scientists with up to five prizes in life sciences, one in fundamental physics, and one in mathematics. Each prize comes with a $3 million award. In addition, up to six New Horizons Prizes, each with an award of $100,000, will be presented to promising early-career researchers in the fields of fundamental physics and mathematics.

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was established in 2000 by Patrick J. McGovern and Lore Harp McGovern, with the goal of improving human welfare, communication, and understanding through their support for neuroscience research. The institute has announced a call for nominations for its twelfth annual Edward M. Scolnick Prize in Neuroscience. Now in its fifteenth year, the Scolnick Prize is designed to recognize outstanding advances in the field of neuroscience. The prize, which is endowed through a gift from Merck to the McGovern Institute, consists of a $150,000 award, plus an inscribed gift. In addition, the recipient will present a public lecture at the McGovern Institute in spring 2018. A gala dinner for the recipient and invited guests follows the prize lecture. Candidates for the award must be nominated by individuals affiliated with universities, hospitals, medicals schools, or research institutes, with a background in neuroscience. Self-nomination is not permitted.

Submissions are being accepted for the Annals of Science best paper prize 2014. This prize is awarded annually to the author of an original, unpublished essay in the history of science or technology, which is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. The prize, which is supported by Taylor & Francis, is intended for those who are currently doctoral students, or have been awarded their doctorate within the past four years.

The Pierre Delmas Prize will be awarded every year to an individual for outstanding and major scientific contributions to the study of bone and mineral diseases, and consists of a grant of € 40 000 and a medal. The Prize Committee is composed of scientists chosen within the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors and ESCEO Scientific Advisory Board.

The prize will be awarded on the basis of scientific merit for independent research dealing with synthesis in the broadest context of organic chemistry, including organometallic chemistry, medicinal and biological chemistry, designed molecules, and materials. Candidates must be under 40 years of age as of January 1 of the year in which the prize is awarded.

Baxter's Young Investigator Awards seek to stimulate and reward research applicable to the development of therapies and medical products that save and sustain patients' lives. We invite current graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to submit descriptions of ongoing research. The Baxter Young Investigator Awards program consists of two tiers: first-tier awards include a $3,000 cash prize and an onsite visit to Baxter to present the award-winning research; second-tier awards receive a $500 cash prize. Prizes are granted based on merit of the research.

The Vilcek Foundation will award three prizes of $35,000 each to young foreign-born biomedical scientists who demonstrate outstanding early achievement. Eligible work may be in basic, applied, and/or translational biomedical science.

Nominations for the Genetics Prize are invited annually from the field of genetics. Nominations may be submitted by individuals, organizations, and institutions that are active in or have an appreciation for contemporary genetic research or problems.

The annual award program recognizes an individual who has made a major contribution (a single accomplishment or series of accomplishments) that has significantly advanced gastroenterological basic or clinical research. The winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize and an engraved commemorative plaque, which will be presented by the AGA Chair during Digestive Disease Week. In addition, the recipient is invited to deliver a presentation at the plenary session on the development and significance of his or her work. The recipient also will receive a travel grant to attend the meeting.

The Vilcek Foundation will award three Creative Promise Prizes of $50,000 each to young foreign-born biomedical scientists who demonstrate outstanding early achievement. Eligible work may be in basic, applied, and/or translational biomedical science.

Within the framework of the For Women in Science partnership between the L'Oréal Foundation and UNESCO, we are launching the 2014 call for nominations for outstanding women scientist form all over the world. Five 100.000$ prizes will be awarded in march 2014 in Paris to five women scientists, one per region, for the contributions of their research, the strength of their commitments and their impact on society. An international Jury of eminent scientists presided in 2013 by the Nobel Prize winner, Ahmed Zewali, makes the final selection.

The AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science, established in 2010, recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities. A monetary prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting, and reimbursement for reasonable hotel and travel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting to receive the prize are given to the recipient.

The AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science, established in 2010, recognizes early-career scientists and engineers who demonstrate excellence in their contribution to public engagement with science activities. A monetary prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration to the AAAS Annual Meeting, and reimbursement for reasonable hotel and travel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting to receive the prize are given to the recipient. Nominee must be an early-career scientist or engineer in academia, government or industry actively conducting research in any scientific discipline (including social sciences and medicine).  "Early career" is defined as an individual who has been in his/her current field for less than seven years and pre-tenure or job equivalent. Post-doctoral students are eligible for this award. Nominee will have demonstrated excellence in his/her contribution to public engagement with science activities, with a focus on interactive dialogue between the individual and a non-scientific, public audience(s). Types of public engagement activities might include: informal science education, public outreach, public policy, and/or science communication activities, such as mass media, public dialogue, radio, TV and film, science café, science exhibit, science fair, and social and online media.

The biennial prize provides a $100,000 honorarium, national and international recognition, and support to an international leader in the clinical sciences of cardiovascular medicine, cardiothoracic surgery, or the basic sciences of molecular or cellular cardiology.

DEBUT challenges teams of students in undergraduate biomedical education to solve real world problems in healthcare. Prizes of up to $20,000 will be awarded, with a total prize purse of $80,000. Strong DEBUT submissions will demonstrate a mastery of analytical and design skills and capabilities; the ability to manage the product development process; the ability to work effectively in teams; and technical communication skills. The Michelson Medical Research Foundation (MMRF) together with the Human Vaccines Project have established the Michelson Prizes for Human Immunology and Vaccine Research. The $20 million initiative, funded by the MMRF and administered by the Human Vaccines Project, aims to support young investigators applying innovative research concepts and disruptive technologies to significantly advance the development of future vaccines and therapies to defeat major global diseases. While the Michelson Prizes are focused on research outcomes in the fields of human immunology and vaccinology, applicants from the full spectrum of related disciplines, including clinical research, biomedicine, artificial intelligence/machine learning, engineering, and nanotechnology are encouraged to apply. Proposals will be reviewed and winners selected by a distinguished committee of internationally-recognized research scientists.

The third annual Lupus Insight Prize, presented in a collaboration among the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) and the Lupus Research Institute (LRI), will be awarded by the three organizations to recognize and honor an outstanding investigator with a documented record of creativity, innovation and productivity. The researcher will also be someone who has made a novel insight and/or discovery in an area of research that is applicable to the pathogenesis or treatment of lupus and is judged to have a high likelihood of generating further advances by applying that insight to lupus.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Associate Director for Data Science (ADDS) announces a collaboration with the Wellcome Trust (WT) and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to launch the ``Open Science Prize'' (the ``Challenge'') to encourage and support the prototyping and development of services, tools and/or platforms that enable open content--including publications, datasets, code and other research outputs--to be discovered, accessed and re-used in ways that will advance research, spark innovation, and generate new societal benefits. The Challenge is necessary to accelerate the field of ``open'' biomedical research beyond what current funding mechanisms can achieve.
