    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) supports the optimization of potential therapeutic Biotechnology Products and Biologics (e.g., peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides, gene and cell therapies) for disorders identified under the NINDS mission. This track supports the further characterization and optimization of therapeutic lead(s) that showed promise as a potential therapeutic agent as evidenced by convincing animal proof-of-concept studies.     The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology.  The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site.  For FY 2013, these BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation in Biology; (2) Intersections of Biology and Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering; (3) National Plant Genome Initiative Postdoctoral Research Fellowships; and (4) International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology.  These areas change periodically as new scientific and infrastructure opportunities present themselves. For this reason, this solicitation will be changed as necessary to reflect the areas being funded.

    The US National Science Foundation (NSF) and the US-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Research Cooperation. The MOU provides an overarching framework to encourage collaboration between US and Israeli research communities and sets out the principles by which jointly supported activities might be developed. The MOU provides for an international collaboration arrangement whereby US researchers may receive funding from the NSF and Israeli researchers may receive funding from the BSF. The Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB) the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) of the National Science Foundation and the US-Israel Binational Science Foundation are pleased to announce a US-Israel collaborative research opportunity. The goal is to help reduce some of the current barriers to working internationally. NSF/BIO/MCB and BSF will address these issues by allowing US and Israeli researchers to submit a single collaborative proposal that will undergo a single review process.

    The Nano-Bio Manufacturing Consortium is expected to grow the US-centric innovation ecosystem that will risk reduce material supply (including nanomaterials & biomaterials), processing techniques, and flexible/stretchable device concepts by demonstrating component- and system-level functionality relevant to human-integrated technologies, such as airman-performance monitoring (APM) and augmentation (APA) systems. This public-private partnership should build upon the foundation of research & development excellence that has been established within NBMC since its 2013 inception. It is envisioned that technology development will require teaming between academia and industry in partnership with government researchers as well as with appropriate members of the regulatory and operational DoD communities. A balance between enabling component- and systems-level prototype development is expected to be realized through end-technologies between TRL 3 and TRL 6. The BioWatch Program is an early warning system that is designed to detect the intentional release of select aerosolized biological agents. The BioWatch Program's mission is to provide and maintain a continuous bio-terrorism air monitoring system in metropolitan areas and coordinate with state and local public health communities to prepare for and respond to a bioterrorist event. This mission is accomplished by serving as an early warning system which enhances the security of jurisdictions by providing the needed time to execute their comprehensive concept of operations plans to counter biological terrorism. The Biowatch Program is a critical part of an ongoing national effort to build and sustain preparedness which helps the United States to maintain momentum through targeted jurisdictional planning that highlights preventative actions necessary to allow for a proper and timely response and begin the process to recovery from a biological agent release.

    It has been suggested that generic iron complex formulations could have higher levels of labile iron, leading to the formation of a greater amount of non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI) in vivo than the reference listed drug (RLD) that would potentiate oxidative stress and inflammation, then resulting in direct cellular damage. The objectives of this study are to evaluate various in-vitro methods of determining labile iron in the parenteral iron complex formulations and develop a bio-relevant in-vitro method to predict the amount of NTBI in vivo. Such a predictive in-vitro method will allow for linkage of FDA's equivalence standards to in vivo performance.

    This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages exploratory and developmental grant applications to lay the foundation for innovative and collaborative basic research on the role of epigenetics in social, behavioral, environmental and biological relationships, throughout the life-span and across generations. Research plans that are responsive to this FOA will use existing bio-psycho-social and environmental data from human cohorts or animal studies that have biospecimens available for epigenetic profiling.     As Synthetic Biology is the attempt to engineer biology, projects should incorporate engineering principles like modularity, abstraction, standardization and orthogonality and use modelling approaches to  optimize or improve a biological or bio-based unit. Unlike descriptive biological disciplines, projects are expected to use deliberate (re)design and construction of parts, devices or systems. Projects can  derive from basic research or more applied research areas in chemical biology, biophysics, biotechnology or biomedicine. Potential advances for society should be outlined in the proposal.

    The Instrument Development for Biological Research (IDBR) Program supports the development, production, and distribution of novel instrumentation that addresses demonstrated needs in biological research in areas supported by NSF Biology programs (see http://www.nsf.gov/bio). These systems would benefit a broad user community through mass distribution of the technology. Interdisciplinary collaborations are strongly encouraged, as are partnerships with U.S. industries that can facilitate knowledge transfer, commercialization and broad utilization in the research community. The program accepts two types of proposals:Type A - Innovation: Proposals for the development of novel instrumentation that provides new research capabilities or, where appropriate, that significantly improves current technologies by at least an order of magnitude in fundamental aspects such as accuracy, precision, resolution, throughput, flexibility, breadth of application, costs of construction or operation, or user-friendliness.Type B - Bridging: Proposals for transforming ‘one of a kind' prototypes or high-end instruments into devices that are broadly available and utilizable without loss of capacity.     According to recent conversations between OARS staff and an NSF official, the NSF BioMaPS program is a funding opportunity that is perhaps undertargeted by researchers.  It funds interdisciplinary proposals that address "the interface between the biological, mathematical, and physical sciences and engineering."  Unsolicited proposals can be submitted to the deadlines of any relevant program in BIO, ENG, or MPS.  The label "BIOMAPS" should appear at the beginning of the proposal title.

Coordinating Center for the HIV/AIDS and Substance Use Cohorts Program (U24) - 0 views

    The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) supports a program of longitudinal cohorts to address emerging and high priority research on HIV/AIDS in the context of injection and non-injection substance abuse.  These cohorts provide a strong resource platform for current and future collaborative efforts with other investigators to address emerging questions related to HIV pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment in the context of substance abuse, as well as to foster the creativity and efficiency of investigator-initiated research projects. The diverse research activities among these cohorts include basic immunologic, and virologic studies, as well as studies on HIV prevention and treatment, and the co-morbidities and co-infections associated with HIV and substance abuse.  NIDA has determined that a coordinating center (CC) is needed in order to take advantage of these rich sources of data and bio-specimens and optimize collaborations among both the cohort investigators and other researchers not funded under the cohort program. In addition, the CC is expected to establish a virtual repository, and facilitate the leadership of the cohorts steering committee (SC), consisting of representatives from the NIDA-funded cohorts and NIDA staff. At this time, NIDA is soliciting  cooperative agreement applications for a CC to support the collaborative efforts of the cohorts that are currently funded by NIDA.
