This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications to conduct research on the effects of public policies on health-related behaviors and outcomes associated with alcohol, marijuana, and other substances. The purpose of the FOA is to advance understanding of how public policy may serve as a tool for improving public health and welfare through its effects on behaviors and outcomes pertaining to alcohol and other drugs. This FOA is intended to support innovative research to examine policy effects that have the potential to lead to meaningful changes in public health. Research projects that may be supported by this FOA include, but are not necessarily limited to: causal analyses of the effects of one or multiple public policies; evaluations of the effectiveness of specific public policies as tools for improving public health through their effects on alcohol-, marijuana-, and other substance-related behaviors and outcomes; and research to advance methods and measurement used in studying relationships between public policies and alcohol-, marijuana-, and other substance-related behaviors and outcomes.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows program is designed to provide a comprehensive fellowship experience at the nexus of health science, policy, and politics in Washington, D.C. The program provides an opportunity for exceptional mid-career health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and healthcare policy. Fellows participate in the policy process at the federal level and use that leadership experience to improve health, health care, and health policy. Exceptional candidates from academic faculties and nonprofit healthcare organizations are encouraged to apply. Applicants may have backgrounds in the disciplines of allied health professions, biomedical sciences, dentistry, economics or other social sciences, health services organization and administration, medicine, nursing, public health, social and behavioral health, or health law. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Up to six grants of a maximum of $165,000 will be made in 2018. Each fellow will receive up to $104,000 for their stay in Washington (September 1, 2018, through August 31, 2019) in salary, plus fringe benefits or a fellowship stipend.

The purpose of this Dear Colleague Letter is to advise you about funding opportunities at the National Science Foundation for the research community to propose research projects or workshops that will gather data on the implementation and impacts of recent science policy initiatives including, but not limited to those noted earlier.  Especially encouraged are proposals that will: Develop new, or improve existing, analytical frameworks for evaluating the impacts of federal science policy initiatives; Explore different agencies' approaches to the implementation of particular policies to examine how variations in approach affect the achievement of intended policy outcomes; Collect case-study or quantitative data that facilitate identification of best practices in science and innovation policy implementation.

The Science of Science & Innovation Policy (SciSIP) program supports research designed to advance the scientific basis of science and innovation policy. Research funded by the program thus develops, improves and expands models, analytical tools, data and metrics that can be applied in the science policy decision making process. For example, research proposals may develop behavioral and analytical conceptualizations, frameworks or models that have applications across a broad array of SciSIP challenges, including the relationship between broader participation and innovation or creativity. Proposals may also develop methodologies to analyze science and technology data, and to convey the information to a variety of audiences. Researchers are also encouraged to create or improve science and engineering data, metrics and indicators reflecting current discovery, particularly proposals that demonstrate the viability of collecting and analyzing data on knowledge generation and innovation in organizations. Among the many research topics supported are:examinations of the ways in which the contexts, structures and processes of science and engineering research are affected by policy decision, the evaluation of the tangible and intangible returns from investments in science and from investments in research and development, the study of structures and processes that facilitate the development of usable knowledge, theories of creative processes and their transformation into social and economic outcomes, the collection, analysis and visualization of new data describing the scientific and engineering enterprise. The SciSIP program invites the participation of researchers from all of the social, behavioral and economic sciences as well as those working in domain-specific applications such as chemistry, biology, physics, or nanotechnology. The year-long Health and Aging Policy Fellows program offers fellows the opportunity to participate in a residential track or a non-residential track. The residential track allows fellows to participate in the policymaking process on either the Federal or state level as legislative assistants in Congress, professional staff members in executive branch agencies or policy organizations. The non-residential track allows fellows to remain at their home institution but work on a policy project that involves brief placement(s) throughout the year at relevant sites. Core program components focused on career development and professional enrichment are provided for fellows in both tracks. Fellows also have the opportunity to apply for second-year funding to continue components of their fellowship experience/project either at their placement sites, at the state/local levels, or with non-governmental organizations. Our key partner in this effort is the American Political Science Association which has established the most respected and longest running policy fellowship program in Washington, DC.

The Science of Science & Innovation Policy (SciSIP) program supports research designed to advance the scientific basis of science and innovation policy. Research funded by the program thus develops, improves and expands models, analytical tools, data and metrics that can be applied in the science policy decision making process.

1) Policy/Advocacy: This category recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding effort and leadership in policy/advocacy-related activities that improve the welfare of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and/or whose work improves the delivery of prevention services to individuals and communities affected by HIV/AIDS. 2) Research: This category recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding effort and leadership in the conduct, dissemination, and translation of high-quality research in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment/care, and/or policy. 3) Service Provision: This category recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding effort and leadership in the delivery of psychological services to people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, and/or the delivery of technical or support services to community agencies that provide a range of HIV/AIDS-related services to individuals and communities affected by HIV/AIDS. 4) Teaching/Mentoring: This category recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding effort and leadership in educating psychologists or students in psychology about HIV/AIDS practice, research, and/or policy. 

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are interested in proposals that will propel our understanding of the biomedical research enterprise by drawing from the scientific expertise of the science of science policy research community. NSF promotes the progress of science by maintaining the general health of research and education across all fields of science and engineering. The Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) Directorate within the NSF supports basic research on people and society. The SBE sciences focus on human behavior and social organizations and how social, economic, political, cultural, and environmental forces affect the lives of people from birth to old age and how people in turn shape those forces. SBE's Science of Science and Innovation Policy (SciSIP) program supports research designed to advance the scientific basis of science and innovation policy.

SFPRF defines impact as the demonstrable contribution that family planning research makes to society. This includes impact on clinical practice, public policy, health services, programs, or culture. Research projects should have the potential to exert influence through policies or practices that enhance family planning, including contraception and abortion. When addressing impact, consider who could potentially benefit from your work, as well as ways to increase the chances that those potential benefits will reach the target audience.

The National Council on Disability (NCD) will seek proposals for a report series on bioethics and disability. The findings in these reports primarily serve to assist policymakers, including the White House and Congress, with the insight needed to make policy decisions designed to improve medical decision-making regarding persons with disabilities. The reports will also provide state legislatures, medical associations and educators, and persons with disabilities and those who support them, with an understanding of policy, legislation, and initiatives that impact their lives. The report series will examine policies and practices related to the availability of medical interventions and life-saving medical care for persons with disabilities. It will examine five specific areas where disability and bioethics intersect, with a focus on how a person's disability impacts medical decisions, including decisions to provide life-saving care.

This FOA, issued by the Office of Medical Policy (OMP), Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Food and Drug Administration, solicits grant applications from neutral, independent institutions and/or organizations to support meetings (e.g., conferences, workgroups, roundtables) that convene a broad range of multiple stakeholders, including those with relevant expertise, to explore and address issues related to medical products, policy, and surveillance methods and systems. Support includes but is not limited to preliminary research of identified topics, the design, planning, execution, synthesis, summary, and communication of findings from these forums to a broad range of organizations and individuals.

The purpose of this Notice is to communicate the NHLBI Policy regarding investigator-initiated submission of collaborative (tethered) R01 applications. Effective immediately, collaborative applications submitted to NHLBI via PA-16-160 with identical research strategies will be Withdrawn (and will not proceed to review) due to violation of policies concerning overlapping applications (described in detail in NOT-OD-09-100).

Research!America is pleased to announce an exciting new program to introduce and engage early-career scientists in research advocacy and science policy. The 2013 Research!America Advocacy Academy is a unique opportunity for postdoctoral fellows in the health and biomedical sciences to learn about how to best incorporate advocacy and effective communications into their role as a scientist. The 2013 class of up to 12 Research!America advocates will participate in a two-day Washington, DC, program from September 11-12, 2013. Participants will learn about the federal budget and appropriations process, tools for effective science communication and outreach as well as how to engage with elected representatives on scientific and research issues. The program includes visiting Capitol Hill to meet with policy makers and congressional staff members, providing participants with a first-hand experience advocating for health research. Rounding out this unique Washington experience, participants will attend Research!America's National Health Research Forum where top leaders in government, industry, academia and patient organizations engage in moderated conversations on issues of importance to the research ecosystem. Upon completion of the program, participants will become Science Advocates for Research!America. Advocates will remain engaged with Research!America staff, receive ongoing action alerts and learn about ways to involve their home institution's research community in effective science advocacy. All travel expenses (transportation, lodging and meals) will be provided and arranged by Research!America through an educational grant provided by Pfizer. This year's program is limited to 12 exceptional postdoctoral researchers with a dedicated interest in becoming active advocates for science.

Component A: To support a 5-year multi-center research network of innovative, non-health system-based, natural experiments approaches to alter the diabetogenic characteristics of US communities. Priority areas include population-level approaches to the promotion of healthy eating and active living by evaluating the impact of environmental and policy interventions on population-level risk factors for diabetes. Component B: To fund a Central Coordinating Center (CCC) to provide organizational, logistic and communication support to enhance the efficiency, productivity, and impact of the Natural Experiments research centers that are funded as part of Component A.

The Office of the Science Advisor (OSA), Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking 1 or more individuals to will work directly with the  Science Advisor for the Administrator and the Deputy Director for the Office of the Science Advisor.  The Office of Science advisor (OSA), part of the Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters located in Washington, DC, provides leadership in  cross-Agency science and science policy development and implementation to ensure the best possible use of science at the Agency. These efforts help ensure regulations are interpreted and enforced in a manner consistent with the science supporting them and will strengthen EPA's overall scientific performance. The mission of the OSA is to provide leadership and serve as an honest broker for crossAgency science, science policy, and technology issues. The duty location is Washington, DC. Work is expected to begin in September or October, 2013 and have a one (1) year period. Two (2) additional one (1) year optional periods may be exercised,  depending on performance and need. The total duration of the order, including base and any option periods and other extension shall not exceed thirty six months or 3 years. The student contractor will be  paid by the hour for a maximum of 1928 hours annually. The total value of the order (base and all option periods) shall not exceed $150,000.00.

The Whitehall Foundation, through its program of grants and grants-in-aid, assists scholarly research in the life sciences. It is the Foundation's policy to assist those dynamic areas of basic biological research that are not heavily supported by Federal Agencies or other foundations with specialized missions. In order to respond to the changing environment, the Whitehall Foundation periodically reassesses the need for financial support by the various fields of biological research. The Foundation does not award funds to investigators who have substantial existing or potential support, even if it is for an unrelated purpose. Applications may be held in abeyance until the results of other funding decisions are determined. While it is difficult to assign a specific dollar amount to this policy and each case is unique, the Foundation currently defines "substantial" as approximately $200,000 per year (including both direct and indirect expense but excluding the Principal Investigator's salary). The Foundation is currently interested in basic research in neurobiology, defined as follows: Invertebrate and vertebrate (excluding clinical) neurobiology, specifically investigations of neural mechanisms involved in sensory, motor, and other complex functions of the whole organism as these relate to behavior. The overall goal should be to better understand behavioral output or brain mechanisms of behavior. The Foundation does not support research focused primarily on disease(s) unless it will also provide insights into normal functioning.

The Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) of the Society of Toxicology is pleased to announce the Best Postdoctoral Publication Awards (BPPA). These awards were created to recognize talented postdoctoral researchers who have recently published exceptional papers in the field of toxicology. Applications are reviewed by the PDA Executive Board and a committee containing appropriate scientific expertise. The review process follows National Institutes of Health (NIH) conflict of interest policy, confidentiality, and nondisclosure policies. Three awards, each consisting of a plaque and $250, are presented at the PDA Luncheon during the SOT Annual Meeting.
