Omega-3 fatty acids enter plaque, resulting in increased stability and less inflammatio... - 0 views

  •
"June 21, 2006 | Michael O'Riordan Rome, Italy - One of the possible ways in which long-chain omega-3 fatty acids play a role in decreasing cardiovascular events is by entering advanced atherosclerotic plaques. According to the results of a new study, investigators were able to show that the incorporation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) into advanced plaque was associated with a decreased expression of various matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) involved in causing plaque instability, as well as with decreased plaque inflammation. These are results of the Omacor Carotid Endarterectomy Intervention (OCEAN) study, presented here this week at the International Symposium on Atherosclerosis by Dr Philip Calder (University of Southampton, UK). "By increasing the availability of omega-3 fatty acids, they appear in advanced atherosclerotic plaques, indicated in this study by the carotid artery, and this results in lower numbers of macrophages, foam cells, and T cells, as well as the lower expression of inflammatory markers," said Calder. "Histologically, this results in a plaque that appears to be less inflamed and more stable. This may contribute to reduced mortality in patients consuming omega-3 fatty acids, for example, in the GISSI Prevenzione trial.""

The Diet-Heart Hypothesis: Subdividing Lipoproteins - Whole Health Source - 0 views

  •
The Diet-Heart Hypothesis: Subdividing Lipoproteins Two posts ago, we made the rounds of the commonly measured blood lipids (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides) and how they associate with cardiac risk. It's important to keep in mind that many things associate with cardiac risk, not just blood lipids. For example, men with low serum vitamin D are at a 2.4-fold greater risk of heart attack than men with higher D levels. That alone is roughly equivalent to the predictive power of the blood lipids you get measured at the doctor's office. Coronary calcium scans (a measure of blood vessel calcification) also associate with cardiac risk better than the most commonly measured blood lipids. Lipoproteins Can be Subdivided into Several Subcategories In the continual search for better measures of cardiac risk, researchers in the 1980s decided to break down lipoprotein particles into sub-categories. One of these researchers is Dr. Ronald M. Krauss. Krauss published extensively on the association between lipoprotein size and cardiac risk, eventually concluding (source): The plasma lipoprotein profile accompanying a preponderance of small, dense LDL particles (specifically LDL-III) is associated with up to a threefold increase in the susceptibility of developing [coronary artery disease]. This has been demonstrated in case-control studies of myocardial infarction and angiographically documented coronary disease. Krauss found that small, dense LDL (sdLDL) doesn't travel alone: it typically comes along with low HDL and high triglycerides*. He called this combination of factors "lipoprotein pattern B"; its opposite is "lipoprotein pattern A": large, buoyant LDL, high HDL and low triglycerides. Incidentally, low HDL and high triglycerides are hallmarks of the metabolic syndrome, the quintessential modern metabolic disorder. Krauss and his colleagues went on to hypothesize that sdLDL promotes atherosclerosis because of its ability to penetrate the artery wall more easily

Swine Flu Fish Oil Warning - healthyfellow.com - 0 views

  •
"I know what you may be thinking: "Fish oil?! I thought fish oil was supposed to be healthy! One day you say we should take it, now you're saying it puts us at risk for Swine Flu?" Well, there is a reasonable answer, but it doesn't come in the form of a simple "fish oil is good" or "fish oil is bad" kind of package. The truth is that eating fish and taking fish oil is very often extremely beneficial for a great number of health conditions. But there is no substance on Earth that is 100% healthy under every conceivable circumstance. Take water, for example. Drinking plenty of pure water is a healthful practice. On the other hand, drinking excessive amounts (water intoxication) can lead to serious bodily damage and even death. The August issue of the Journal of Nutrition reports on a study conducted on two groups of mice fed either a fish oil or corn oil enriched diet. (4) All the mice were infected with the flu virus and were then examined over a two week period. Several interesting observations were made at the conclusion of the trial: * The mice receiving the fish oil exhibited lower levels of lung tissue inflammation. This confirms the known anti-inflammatory activity of omega-3 fatty acids found in fish. * However, these same mice suffered a "40% higher mortality rate", a "70% higher lung viral load" and "a prolonged recovery period following infection". * The researchers also noted a decline in NK (natural killer) cells in the spleens of the mice that were fed fish oil and a decrease in CD8+ T cells. NK cells and cytotoxic T cells are vital players in the body's ability to deal with infections."

"Hypervitaminosis D is a state of vitamin D toxicity. The recommended daily allowance is 400 IU per day. Overdose has been observed at 1925 µg/d (77,000 IU per day). Acute overdose requires between 15,000 µg/d (600,000 IU per day) and 42,000 µg/d (1,680,000 IU per day) over a period of several days to months, with a safe intake level being 250 µg/d (10,000 IU per day).[1] Foods contain low levels, and have not been known to cause overdose. Overdose has occurred due to industrial accidents, for example when incorrectly formulated pills were sold or missing industrial concentrate cans misused as cans of milk. Vitamin D toxicity is unlikely except when certain medical conditions are present, such as primary hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, tuberculosis, and lymphoma."

Mango Dash: Mango Tetra Pak In Juice, Nectar And Still Drinks - 0 views

  •
Tetra Pak Juice, nectar and still drinks are three categories of drinks with so many variants that all consumers, regardless of age, lifestyle and taste preferences, can find their favorites. Common to them all is that, to varying degrees, they contain the natural Mango juice or extract from fruit, vegetables or herbs. What the final product can be called is regulated by national and regional food legislation, but with some variation. Mango Tetra Pak Juice - 100% fruit Juice Juice contains only the natural ingredients contained in fruit and vegetables, i.e. fruit juice or fruit juice concentrate, water, natural flavorings and fruit pulp. Whether the juice comes from concentrate or not, it undergoes a mild pasteurization process before packaging to ensure that the consumer gets a safe, high quality product, without any risk of unwanted micro-organisms. Product content and labeling of fruit juices are subject to different regulations that vary globally. In the USA there are standards set by the FDA and USDA, in the EU there are both mandatory directives and recommendations, and other regions may have a mixture of mandatory and voluntary standards. Nectar Within the beverage industry nectar is a fruit juice that is too thick to drink for example, from apricots, peaches and pears. The mango juice, or rather the puree, must therefore be diluted with water and have sugar added to make it drinkable. The fruit juice content in nectar can vary between 25 and 99 per cent. Still drinks The next step on the scale for less juice content is still drinks, namely fruit drinks with less than 25 per cent of fruit content. Some countries require that the juice content is stated on the package and others have a minimum requirement for juice content.

Raw Foods That Help You Heal - Google Books - 29 views

I am very pleased with the great cuisine that has appeared in our country over the past 50 years. And all this, in a certain sense, is connected with cultural appropriation. For example, excellent seafood is served here https://www.gourmetfoodstore.com/caviar/ My friend has already ordered from them many times and was very pleased. Really, maybe it should be easier to relate to this?
