Social media has surpassed search, and is poised to overtake online display advertising as the No. 1 source of digital media planning and buying, according to the latest edition of a quarterly survey of U.S. advertising agencies. The survey, conducted by Strata, the agency media software and processing firm owned by Comcast, found that 69% of agency executives now consider social the "focus" of their digital ad spending -- up 32% over the past year, and now a close second behind display (71%) as the dominant digital media-buying platform in the minds of agency executives.
Will we be a country of high-volume and low quality? Or can we become an economy of quality and price premium? Whether it's drinking, buying computers or choosing what industrial policy to support, we are in the process of answering those questions.
The rise of the social Web has led to a fundamental shift in the way businesses of all sizes engage with their customers. Rather than focusing on "touch points" during the marketing and sales process, they're using social technologies to form meaningful, ongoing relationships that involve frequent online interactions, oftentimes through social channels.

Interesting article. I liked this comment: users don't necessarily have a preconceived idea of what they want-but they know what they want when they see it. This dynamic gives brands the opportunity to introduce products, concepts and content much earlier in the decision making process and actually drive discovery.

For the last two weeks, I've been engaged in a very interesting experiment. Five faculty members from the Fashion and Apparel department have agreed to explore social media for personal productivity, professional development, curriculum redesign, and program promotion.

I also think your presentation to FASH 325 would be good to give to students earlier in their UD career. I was thinking about FASH 210, a course on FASH sustainability and business ethics in the Fashion Industry. These sessions will make us more sustainable!
Thanks Martha. I think you're right that students need to be exposed earlier to this, but I also think that we could chunk the session up in little parts, where I wouldn't necessarily need to be directly involved.
