Push Paws: "Game For Cats" iPad App Makers Stop Kitties From Buying Add-Ons | Fast Company - 0 views

  •
The aptly named app development firm Hiccup has finally fixed a major meow mixup: The interface in their free iPad app, "Game For Cats," allowed felines across the world to download premium content add-ons by accident. Like many iPad gaming firms, Hiccup opted to go for a freemium profit model. Their game comes loaded with a screen emulating a laser pointer, whose darting red dot is irresistible to most cats. But screens displaying other forms of virtual catnip--a mouse on a string, for example--cost 99 cents as DLC (downloadable content). There was only one problem: Early versions of the game had a user interface that made it extremely easy for cats to purchase the DLC with their paws--taking their human guardians (but not their credit cards) completely out of the equation.

"But before they can become global media brands, venture-backed video content providers need to earn revenue. Dublin-based BalconyTV, which showcases up-and-coming music artists, has nearly 32 million views but is exploring advertising, sponsorships and brand partnerships to capitalize on its massive following. "We'll probably bring a brand on board and advertisers in the short-term," said BalconyTV Chief Executive Stephen O'Regan.  "We need to get a lot of things right before we can reach our goal of becoming a large music brand globally." AwesomenessTV, meanwhile, is currently relying on advertising revenue it shares with Google but Terbeek said the earnings were "material" so far. But he added that larger opportunities including licensing content to third parties and big media brands exist down the road, not to mention potentially lucrative exit opportunities."

New Adobe stats show encouraging signs of life for tablet magazines | VentureBeat - 0 views

  •
The first promising stat is that tablet publications keep readers' attention, with 56 percent of DPS content being read for 25 minutes to 2.5 hours each month. Nine percent of readers spend up to 5 hours a month reading tablet publications. One of the reasons for these un-Internet-like attention spans might be interactivity. Tablet publications are packed with slideshows, videos, 360-degree images, and constantly updated content from the web.

Why Burberry Wants to Bring the Online Experience to Stores - 3 views

  •
burberry's strategy: The flagship, by Burberry's description, has seamlessly integrated technology throughout. Full-length screens wrap the store, transitioning between audio-visual content displays, live-streaming hubs and and mirrors. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) chips have been attached to certain clothes and accessories so that when a customer approaches one of the screens in a fitting room, specific content - say, information about a bag's stitching and craftsmanship, or a video showing how a skirt was worn on the catwalk - will appear.

  •
Outbrain, a New York-based starteup, is a content recommendation engine that steers web readers to other stories within the site or to other sites that are relevant to the article they're reading, but the business is built on paid distribution, where big publishers such as Slate, USA Today and Conde Nast, which have all been using Outbrain's technology, pay to have articles show up on another site.
