"Guidelines: Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage Materials Still Image Working Group The Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage Materials that can be reproduced by still images represents shared best practices followed by agencies participating in the Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative (FADGI).  This group is involved in a cooperative effort to develop common digitization guidelines for still image materials (such as textual content, maps, and photographic prints and negatives) found in cultural heritage institutions. This document draws substantially on the National Archives and Records Administration's Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Archival Records for Electronic Access: Creation of Production Master Files - Raster Images (June 2004), but has been revised and updated in several areas to reflect the current recommendations of the working group and to reflect changes that have occurred in the digitization field since 2004. These Guidelines were prepared by members of the working group during the winter of 2009-2010. Readers will find updated sections covering equipment and image performance metrics, quality management, and metadata in this revision. "

"A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending a presentation on archiving commemorative African fabrics, through the course of which I learned about the University of Wisconsin's Digital Collections Center. As a historian-in-training and digital archive enthusiast, I became immediately intrigued by all the resources and projects described by Melissa McLimans, a digital librarian who works with the Center and helped digitally archive the fabric. Embedded metadata is a key component of managing digital files, providing information on correct presentation, source of the file, rights, and other information which supports findability, access, authentication, preservation, and more. This paper discusses the concept and uses of embedded metadata in general, and then looks more specifically at its use in WAVE audio files, focusing on the efforts of the Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) to develop recommendations on embedding metadata in audio files created by government agencies. This project resulted in the development of BWF MetaEdit, a tool which allows users to view, edit, and create embedded metadata in WAVE files.

Le développement de l'internet a profondément changé les façons de faire de la recherche dans tous les domaines, y compris les sciences humaines1. Par exemple, on voit un nombre croissant d'études se réclamant des humanités numériques (ou Digital Humanities pour reprendre le terme anglo-saxon fréquemment employé sans être traduit). Les humanités numériques désigneraient un ensemble de pratiques visant à utiliser les médias ou les outils numériques pour analyser des données et/ou diffuser les connaissances produites. De façon générale, nous constatons que la notion de média est insuffisante : en quoi un nouveau canal de diffusion des connaissances pourrait à lui seul transformer des pratiques et des problématiques de chercheurs ? En fait, parce qu'elles sont intimement liées à l'écriture, instrument intellectuel par excellence, les techniques récentes font émerger de nouveaux objets d'études, de nouvelles façons d'aborder des problématiques anciennes, en même temps qu'elles nous offrent un regard renouvelé sur des pratiques que nous croyions banales, ne méritant pas d'être commentées ni mises en perspective. Bien au-delà des humanités numériques, c'est donc l'ensemble des sciences humaines qui subit des transformations majeures. Les méthodes traditionnelles sont ainsi souvent remises en cause et de nouveaux résultats apparaissent, qui vont parfois à l'opposé du sens commun. La masse de données disponibles en ligne a par exemple permis de développer de nouveaux modèles de traduction automatique, faisant fi de la sémantique, contrairement à ce qui était communément admis jusque-là (« il faut comprendre un texte pour pouvoir le traduire »). Les données, leur plasticité et la puissance de calcul disponibles ont aussi profondément renouvelé notre façon d'aborder les problèmes, que ce soit en géographie, en histoire ou en sociologie.
