Rafi Hofstein, President and CEO of MaRS Innovation is one of the inaugural Board of Directors for The Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM). CCRM is a MaRS tenant.

As stated by Alastair Harris-Cartwright "Dr. Andrei Yudin, Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto, has developed a new and effective process that makes linear peptides circular, which allows these molecules, called macrocycles, to enter cells more effectively and increase their stability compared to linear peptides." The Ontario Genomics Institute (OGI) a MaRS Tenant has invested in this project. The project is also supported by MaRS Innovation that is assisting to convert this "great science into commercial opportunities."

MaRS Discovery District Phase II construction is now underway and scheduled for completion in September 2013. Public Health Ontario and Ontario Institute for Cancer Research will be the anchor tenants in the Phase II development.

A former MaRS tenant is now at an innovation lab in Seoul, Korea. He wrote to us and said that "Being around the great minds [at MaRS] while my poorly planned and funded venture fizzled was a great education for me." He's working on this, a site for bloggers to do interviews online in video.  The meetings are recorded, and the blogger can embed the meeting into a website instantly.

Skymeter has developed a GPS-enabled device that's in direct communication with a satellite orbiting the Earth. The GPS enables drivers to conveniently (and accurately) make good their bills for services such as parking, toll road use, and pay-as-you-go insurance.

CML HealthCare Inc is planning to automate it's current infrastructure to deliver greater volume and medical laboratory tests. CML is also working to commercialize early-stage technologies in medical diagnostics in partnership with an Ontario government agency known as MaRS Innovation.

According to Theresa Boyle, Health Report of The Star, states that scientists have discovered the process that underlies in the development of cancer cell mutations in breast cancer. Mike Stratton who is part of the International Cancer Genome Consortium at the MaRS Centre states these "findings will go a long way in helping the consortium achieve its goal of mapping the genetic mutations in 50 different types of cancer by 2018."

"It has been reported that the amount of venture capital invested in Ottawa is slipping. The Venture Capital & Private Equity Association has been observing more early stage companies receiving help from incubators such as MaRS Discovery District in Toronto."

Flybits is a MaRS Innovation spinoff company from Ryerson University. Flybits has developed an innovative, context-aware software as a service framework called FARE (Flybits Activity Recognition Engine). "Flybits CEO and Founder Hossein Rahnama was among the entrepreneurs of Ryerson University's Digital Media Zone to meet the Prince of Wales and demonstrate his cloud-based and context-aware software solution."

MaRS Discovery District is offering a one-week boot camp for students between the ages of 13 and 15, where they will invent and test original business ideas and learn skills to help them succeed in business. The program is called "MaRS Future Leaders."
