Enabling the Creative Entrepreneur: Business Ecosystems | TIM Review - 0 views

  • Business Ecosystems
  • James F. Moore in 1993
  • Today, "ecosystem leaders" are generally referred to as "keystone organizations". Keystone organizations can be large or small, complex or simple, and include not-for-profit or commercial for-profit organizations. Commercially oriented keystone organizations are the most dominant and most successful in terms of economic value created as a whole and for ecosystem members. Examples of commercial keystone organizations include large companies such as eBay, Google and Apple. Not-for-profit keystone organizations are less common and are emergent. Examples of not-for-profit keystone organizations include the Eclipse Foundation, Joomla, Drupal, the Mozilla Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, and the Open Group.

  • Different types of keystone organizations
  • Keystone organizations need money to operate and sustain their functions. The nature of how the keystone organization makes money depends upon whether it is a not-for-profit or a for-profit commercial business. A not-for-profit keystone organization typically makes its money through the following means:

Should You Start a Membership Site on Your WordPress Blog? | 7 Graces of Marketing | et... - 0 views

  • A membership site is not a money-machine. The clue is in the name: membership site. It is a collection of people. You don’t just set it up, take people’s money, give them some content and walk away. They are there for an experience. They want something, and you have a duty of care to give it to them. Back when I first set up my Spirit Authors site, I attended a training session with the developers of WishList Member. The one thing they said repeatedly to our group was: ‘People COME to your site for the content, but they STAY for the community.’
  • The bottom line is this: a membership site is not a product; it’s a business. As such, it doesn’t just need good content; it needs a business model, a marketing plan and a team of people who know what they need to do and how to do it.

Beyond X PRIZE: The 10 Best Crowdsourcing Tools and Technologies - 2 views

  •
The Blog of Tim Ferriss with guest post by Peter Diamandis about crowdsourcing problems and going to capital sources for funding. Reviews the changes in communication and cooperation and what is now possible with ICTs.

I was looking for a tool that allowed the "crowd" to create a database, which I think is ultimately what we would want. None of the ten listed seemed to fit that description. Did either of you see one that we may want to consider, or do we try to find something else? Does one of these seem like a good fit for us in other ways?
  •
I haven't determined that any of these is the preferred channel for doing the W.W. database, Lyn. But the idea of incentivizing the creation and maintenance of a crowdsourced 'database' (for lack of a better term) is offered by these groups. A wiki that is set up for a Learning W.W. could be the beginning app until we find someone to do it or a tool to do it better. Even using Diigo in a paid account could work to gather tagged contributions with better organization to follow when we enlist someone to help us.

How Freelancers Could Determine The Next Presidential Election | Fast Company | Busines... - 0 views

  • 53 million voting-age Americans
  • Politicos, meet freelancers.
  • More than one in three Americans (34%) is doing some type of freelance work
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • freelancers’ economic reality is so different from what most politicians understand. Freelancers are simultaneously entrepreneurs and precarious workers. They’re small business owners and workers. That’s why you’re starting to hear echoes of their concerns in the rhetoric of both Rand Paul and Elizabeth Warren.
  • Up-and-down income. Double taxation. No benefits. No safety net. And a government and culture that still doesn’t understand them or the way they work.
  • The bottom line is that this type of gig work is here to stay, whether we choose to embrace it or not.
