    Tynker is the English online platform where the students (children) are taught programming. The aim of the platform is to provide a solid infrastructure for STEM to prepare for the 21st century. Its slogan is "the easiest way to learn programming at school" and more than 20,000 schools use this program. It also include design base learning. I think learning programming at early ages is very important for children to develop their critical and algorithmic thinking skills. This platform facilitates both teachers' work and makes it fun for children.

    I've watched the video twice and in the end I've felt some concerns about the results of the studies. In the "how people learn" part, researchers were testing the storage and connection system of the brain through some high-tech tools. However, does neuropsychology provide enough evidence on the functioning of the brains? Can we generalize the results to all people from all cultures? I am not the one who is against neuropsychology, but for me one discipline may not give an appropriate answer to such a deep question. My second concern is about the integration of computer programs into the curriculum as a major learning tool. We see a program where "Betty" is speaking and giving feedback on the video. The program seems user friendly, but what about the negative aspects and limitations of the integration of technology into learning? Ok, I agree that we have to adapt to the rapid technological changes in the society. However, is technology the key to all learning processes? Plus, the program is designed on the mapping of the concepts. Does concept mapping make a curriculum compelling all the time? I am not sure about all characteristics of the program, but if it hasn't been designed in a challenging style and if all students come up with the same products, then how will they develop their knowledge and reasoning abilities? I couldn't find an answer to that. As for the part "effective teaching", I am in the same opinion with the researchers that there should be a connection between the real world and the subject taught. Moreover, I think the integration of the disciplines is difficult but a very good way of giving meaning to life. Besides, in the video we see teachers as a guide, as a facilitator and there is no doubt that providing individual support to the students helps students feel more involved.

    Firstly, even if it is designed by utilizing modern technology and different understanding, which makes it a more developed and complicated one, the program used in the video reminded me the teaching machines of old times. It gives the priority to the cognitive aspect of learning. This seems to be a one-dimensional approach which underestimates the social aspect of learning. I think the value of classroom interaction for effective learning cannot be replaced by any kind of computer programs. Research on brain is really important and it provides very useful insights for learning and instructional activities. However, it should be supported by the findings of research by social psychologists as well. The very same individual may perform at varying levels when he is taught with the same methods in different environments. I personally experienced many times that even the absence of one individual in my classes affected the teaching an learning processes in a negative or positive way depending upon the classroom dinamics.

    Mostly probably all of you are familiar with Dyned. It is an interactive software for learning English and it is a quite good innovation in the field of computer assisted language learning. It is tired to be used in the public schools and Turkish Ministry of Education supports this.

    I used Dyned in my classes for years or I shoud say I tried to use it:) It is really hard to use technology in public schools and also Dyned is a problematic program in terms of various aspects. However, it was really surprising that all the students were eager to login in the system and use Dyned. I really wonder whether it would make any difference in student achievement if Dyned was used in schools properly.

    We have a similar program in my workplace, "Azarinteractive". However, students are extra demotivated to use it though they have chance to practice listening and so forth. I think you are lucky Pınar, to have eager students to use such a tool. :)))

    I think when sts are first introduced with such programs, they display high motivation. They are eager to find the secrets of the program. However, as time passes and as they get used to the style of the program, their motivation decreases since there are no secrets anymore. Therefore, in my opinion, to keep their motivation at its highest level, each module (if it's modular) should introduce new ways of learning.

    Pınar, I think Carnegie Learning "Success Stories" page does not provide the information whether the research group uses the tutoring system as additional or supportive on top of the control group's traditional lesson content. So if the research group only used the tutoring system then it is a significant result.

    I think it was a supportive program because in the report it was stated that the Cognitive Tutor Algebra I curriculum consisted of classroom instruction, software sessions, and text. However, the information provided in the report is not sufficient to make an evaluation of the program, other variables might have influenced the results.

    Thanks for sharing. Yet I have doubts whether we can call Vitamin as a Cognitive Tutoring Tool. I have just visited the site and checked it. Considering the part about principles and methods for cognitive tutor design on page 67, we see that in Cognitive Tutors the emphasis is on the structure underlying the problem solving, and there we see immediate feedbacks and also minimizing working memory load is important part of them. As I see, what is specific about the Cognitive Tutors is that they have algorithms tracing the learning process and directs it according to the learner's performance spontaneously. Observing Vitamin I see a nice online educational tool including videos, examples about the subject and tests. But still I have doubts whether it is a kind of cognitive tutor or an online education platform.

    I agree with Halil, Vitamin is like distance education programs of Anatolian University. It offers videos presenting he topic and tests of the related subjects. Learners do not take immediate feedback which lead to the individualized progress in the program.

    Thanks for the source:-) As far as I understood, some benefits of these programs are based on some assumptions. For instance, these programs assume that learners are autonomous. That's why they are mostly useful with adults. Or the expertise of the online tutor. The assumption behind is that they are better than the ones in the classroom. Therefore, each benefit brings its risks...

    Thank you İbrahim, I think the con about distraction is very important (It requires more discipline, Your child would have to keep his focus on the screen without getting distracted by emails, IM's or Facebook.) Any ideas to prevent getting distracted?

    For me it is important to be aware of that in foreign language instruction, the movement of your mouth can be really important in getting pronunciation right. That's harder to teach online. If the subject or homework assignment specifically requires the child to write on paper, it's much harder for an online tutor to read along with the student. So it works better for some subjects

    I have seen this post when I was searching for how can interaction with peers contribute to learning maths. It is written by ROBERT SUN who is the CEO of Suntex International and inventor of First In Math, an online program designed for deep practice in mathematics. The things that are mentioned felt very similar with our country's situation actually, as learners how do we use concepts of maths (or any other courses) except from school? May be the first reason for our students cannot learn and hate maths is behind this question.

Anything that encourages them to talk about math and mathematical concepts is beneficial." Social math!. It looks like article emphasizes the importance of language in information exchange. It reminds me Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory in which he also believed that language is important for learning. He also purported that language is culture-dependent so each cultures' learning may be different from each other. In addition, providing opportunity to students to express themselves verbally can give us clues about current mental maps of students as to a specific topic (what is correct, what needs improvement, etc.). In addition, students can transfer their transformed ideas (ideas transformed from scholarly language to level-appropriate language) to their friends which can facilitate their learning.

    Doodle3D Transform is a new 3D app that you can transfom your 2D drawings easily into 3D designs. Beside drawing by hand, you can also scan your photos or upload existing ones. After completing designs, you can send to 3D printer and have it. This project attract much attention at Kickstarter and they collected enough fund. This application can not be a sort of augmented reality one, I don't know but I want to share. I think, it is very usable and helpful for especially kindergarten students. Besides, while STEM is gaining many attention at the education society; this app can also be usable at other level with developing some extensions. Creativity is very important for all students at education and it is very appropriate for that mission. Using pen at our mobile education is still can be spectacular sometimes and I cannot imagine what will possibly happen if developers of that application succeed.

What it basically does is to place a teacher-in-training in a virtual classroom populated by computer-generated students. A Skype conference call and a Microsoft Kinect motion sensor power the high-tech pantomiming behind the platform.     This is a very useful platform, I think. Pre-service teachers are facing some problems at classroom management. I always think it is absurd to give classroom management lesson at theoretical and that is the best way to teach teacher candidated.
