    I like very much this kind of schools, Erdem. Thank you for sharing this video with us. Unfortunately, the current generation's parents are so nurturing/protectionist on their children. As a result, children cannot take risks, or they are afraid of trying something. I think that children can learn better by touching/seeing/observing the concepts. I see lots of private kindergardens around, which are wire-clothed like a "prison" and children are trying to learn something. In such schools showed in video, students also can more easily learn the meaning of abstract things such as "freedom, love of nature, and independence".

    This school seems so intresting and enyable and I think that children can learn much more thing they learn in ordinary kindergardens. But, I agree with the Yasin's comment on parents. Parents are so protectionist and they can not allow children especially in this age group shown in the video to participate in such an activity . They prefer prison like kindergarden to this forest schools. Therfore, I think that teachers first should teach parents that being too protectionist is giving greater harm to child.

    Children learn to manage the risk! It is very important for us as humans surviving through nature. Therefore it sounds good because it contains decision making as well. However preparing such an environments can be so much risky!! Preparation and implementation should be carried carefully.

    Many of the approaches implemented in Nordic countries focus on child's development as a responsible individual of himself/herself and of the environment. This is a great example that connects children to nature.

    Excellent!!! There are so many myths about education and learning teachers, parents, and children just believe without further inquiry. Take mathfobia for instance. Many girls at very early ages are trained to believe that that cannot do math. Their whole education and career are shaped accordingly. These beliefs and misconceptions are really dangerous, and I have to admit that teachers and professors held many of these myths and educate accordingly.

    I am really disappointed now :( I have been deceived by those myths :( I was very sure about some people are left-brained and some are right-brained or the ages 0-3 are more important than any other age for learning. It is quite interesting that I still do not want to believe that they are wrong :)

    Thank you for this source, there are some like Afranur that disappointed me:) I believe that people taking these myths and carrying them all along can be related with a crucial element of our education system: not emphasizing making critiques and reflections. Fortunately critical literacy is gaining importance, I hope its effects will be seen in our education system as well.

    When I read about situated cognition, I saw that cognitive constructivism, social constructivism and situated cognition are the same in manner that all reject objectivist point of view to teaching. However, since they are three different theories, I wonder what makes them different from each other.  I encountered this article in which differences are well emphasized. According to the article: Cognitive constructivism says that people learn by building on their previous experiences with the environment. Since individuals have different history of experiences, same type of didactic teaching is not effective. Cognitive constructivism focuses on mainly individual. Social constructivism purports that knowledge are co-constructed by members of groups from different cultural backgrounds and learning environments should foster collaborative learning. Social constructivism mainly focuses on groups rather than individuals. Situated cognition, on the other hand, suggests that regardless of the fact that concepts are handled as individuals or as groups, if those concepts are not taught within their actual-natural context, learning of those concepts are meaningless and inert. Situated cognition mainly focuses on the context.

    The scandinavian pioneering role in school reforms has a long tradition. It is not only the comprehensive-school-system which makes Finnland a top-performer. Many countries are trying to emulate Finland and more equal opportunities in education can be a good progress. But why is Finnland a top-performer? In my opinion it could be PISA which is responsible for the comparison of school systems. PISA is criticized by many researchers, so first we have to scrutinize whether Finland can be a prototype.

    According to the latest scores of PISA, it seems like we all start to search how China and South Corea is doing in their education systems. As for the question why Finland is a top-performer, there are several aspects to explain it. I think, initially, teacher education comes first and equality and equity in education follow this. Therefore they show up as top thanks to PISA. Their school tradition, history of both economics and education, population and mentality of learning could be obstacles to make it as a prototype and compare with some countries.

    My aim was not to call Finland as a top-performer into question. I want to criticize PISA and their purposes. For example the test-structure are determining the results, so if sth. would be changed, another country will be the top-performer.     We had the same conversation here with my colleagues from Belgium and Netherlands the outcomes that PISA is measuring. It is after all measuring certain outcomes that OECD wants to measure. We also have to be careful in taking Finland as a model and such comparative approach just like mentioned in a series of reports that Christian shared.

    In my oppinion, we couldnot seek the other countries' educational systems, at the begining of possible educational reform process. Before this, students profile and the reasons behind the problems have to be analysed; such as economic and social problems, teacher's competencies, subject matter, schools' physical equipments, etc. As I mentioned, before analysing other countries systems, we have to analyse our educational systems indetail and clearly. From that point, solutions can be seeked and useful after determination fo the problems..

    Now I understand your point, Christian. Thanks for sharing that pdf, I think that is related with the article since it discusses the whole structure of PISA which is showed as a scale. And for sure,that might happen that another country would be top according to another kind of testing but still there is a hard fact about Finland and their school culture. I have seen that infographic before but I feel the need to correct some issues there according to my stay in Finland. For instance, it says that there are no seperate classrooms for accelerated learning or special education but there are many of them. As for homeworks, this saying of having rarely homework is not actually reflecting the reality. They do have homeworks but the definiton of it might cause misunderstandings;)

    In my opinion education policy of the countries do not be planned based on the students' academic achievement. Real achievement of an education system could be observed as individuals' adaptation to life. For example the main vision of the elementary science curriculum defined by Ministry of National Education of Turkey [MONE] (2005) is that regardless of the individual differences of students, they are educated to become scientifically literate, the uniqueness nature of the learner; background and culture of the learners and motivation of the learners were taken into consideration in the development of the curriculum (MONE, 2005), but putting those in the practice is very difficult.

    I like the idea of including different stakeholders in the DBR process. Learning is a complex phenomenon. Context plays a critical role in the DBR on learning. Perhaps, we need to think about ways to build a DBR team.

    Hocam, it would be nice to build a DBR team, we desperately need such an innovation in our field. Maybe, there can be DBR schools where researchers can work with voluntary teachers. If some incentives are provided for the teachers by MONE, they will work eagerly in the projects. Just an example: nowadays, lots of English teachers are doing really good Comenius projects and the motive behind their hard work is going abroad:)

    I couldnt access the book either :( But it seems very interesting, I would like to read and enjoy it. I have heard about Escher for the first time last year by a friend of mine from mathematics department, I believe Escher himself is a mathematician too, is that right? I am especially a fan of his "Waterfall".

    Canan did you try the second link I have added? In fact, he is an artist, but Gödel is. Yet, while trying to explain the nature of meaning, the book gets help from some works by Gödel, Escher and Bach, all of which similarly acquire their meanings by self-referencing and creating formal rules made of meaningless elements. So it is possible to say he is mathematically inspired :) and I like that paradoxal piece too.

    I remember many years ago I read a science fiction book about a game which was created to select the President. (Spoiler - The winner of the game was a 13 old year boy:)) Actually games are very interesting and will be very useful for education but the main problem here is the nature of market and the cost. Last week I was reading an article about mobile learning, I think this quote is meaningful for games too "In any case, hardware devices and technical systems are all without exception designed, manufactured, and marketed for corporate, retail, or recreational users. Any educational uses of the devices and the systems are necessarily parasitic and secondary." We have to consider education as "building the nation, building our future" then we can afford the cost and then educational games, devices will not be secondary...

    Yelda, honestly, I also used to question the contribution of video games to learning and nowadays, as seeing more examples like the one you shared, I guess yes perspective are changing:) I believe as we also discussed in the forum, the most critical thing is how the material, video or something else is presented to the learners and used, not the material itself.

    This video made me question the role of education in children's life again.I think formal education is the biggest barrier for children who have natural abilities to learn. The education system is limiting children's potential and killing their imagination and curiostiy which make them excellent learners indeed. Do you think the school provides them proper opportunities to explore and to learn? I don't think students can learn in our "boring" classes where they are grouped on their ages rather than their abilities.

    Thanks for the source:-) As far as I understood, some benefits of these programs are based on some assumptions. For instance, these programs assume that learners are autonomous. That's why they are mostly useful with adults. Or the expertise of the online tutor. The assumption behind is that they are better than the ones in the classroom. Therefore, each benefit brings its risks...

    Thank you İbrahim, I think the con about distraction is very important (It requires more discipline, Your child would have to keep his focus on the screen without getting distracted by emails, IM's or Facebook.) Any ideas to prevent getting distracted?

    For me it is important to be aware of that in foreign language instruction, the movement of your mouth can be really important in getting pronunciation right. That's harder to teach online. If the subject or homework assignment specifically requires the child to write on paper, it's much harder for an online tutor to read along with the student. So it works better for some subjects
