    This is a great article that explains different ways to use social media in the classroom. One idea that I wanted to share, but it was not on there, was this idea about having a Twitter Debate. I heard about it in a webcast that I watched last week. I think this could also be a very effective tool for students who are trying to get their point across. They would have to find an article to support their point, and by using Twitter and limiting them to 140 characters, it would force them to make their point consice. I think this article could be helpful with teachers. Teachers can have a lot of different ideas to help students use social media in their classroom. I think that I could use different ideas for the library, specifically tweeting different things that are going on in the library.

    I really like the idea of connecting with other classrooms through social media. I think this could work for my writing classes as a very authentic way of getting an audience. Maybe "Share your journal entry on social media and see if you get responses from people other than me and the rest of the kids in this class"? Kids and teachers can take control over this and use it in so many ways: sharing their work, reaching out to other people and classes, connecting with each other outside of class, etc. Plus there are so many different platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest) that allow us to do a variety of things so that you don't have to stick with just one.     This was a great article that gave a lot of diverse ideas for using social media in the classroom. One that I found I could use in my class would be a discussion forum for students who are in different periods, but taking the same/similar class, to communicate with each other on a variety of discussion topics. It could also be applied to allow my engineering students to communicate with the physics classroom. I believe this resource would most benefit teachers, administration, and technology integrationalist. It would be a great way to introduce the idea of incorporation social media into the classroom at a PD meeting.

    This was very informative on how to use social media in the classroom in a fun and appropriate way. There are so many platforms for students to seek or gain information, and I find that some teachers are afraid of allowing their students into the social media world in a classroom setting. Also, I would state that those teachers have not themselves explored social media in an educational format. This could be a great resource for many teachers.

    I think this is an awesome resource to give teachers ideas of how to integrate social media in the classroom more effectively. Edutopia always has lots of great, reliable information and resources.     How is your school liking PenPals Schools? I started using it in my classroom but found it to be too time consuming and the questions were a bit overwhelming in the project that we chose. My students were also not getting responses in the way that I expected them to. A lot of them were just getting a lot of "hi" from their Pen pals instead of anything useful.

    Social Media is important. When I was in middle school and high school we didn't learn about social media or how to be safe on the internet. It was more of a foot note than a subject in class that we learned about. Blogging was foreign to me until now. I feel like I have missed a lot because of this.

    This link is great for teachers to use, especially now that many schools are moving to Google. I particularly like the brief reminders on things that I might not think of for using Google products. This would also be a great resource for students just getting to know the products or older teachers that are less familiar with some of these things.

    Sarah Thank you so much for posting this. We were just given permission from our curricilium director that we are allowed to go ahead with Google for Education, so I think this is going to be a great tool to help my teachers with this project. I agree that this recourse can be used very effectively in the classroom. Teachers are always looking for simples tricks and tools, and this offers so many different choices all within one platform! I think this can be used for both teachers and students, but teachers will find more benifits at the beginning because they will be the ones who are introducing all of these tricks to their students, who will then take off with the different tricks! There are other search engines, like Yahoo and Bing, but nothing seems to come close on all the different educational "apps" that are housed like what Google has to offer. It is simple, convienant, and it is something that seems to be lasting, which is always a HUGE plus when it comes to technology trends!

    Google has so many hidden tricks that nobody knows about! Being aware of these can help you use Google to the most of its ability. I would definitely use this since I want to use Google in my classroom. I have found out how wonderful Google is, and I didn't know some of these tips! This is for teacher use for obvious reasons. There are many lists of things out there, but this is a less known topic so there probably aren't too many.

    I think this resource is very applicable to my classroom because one of my main goals to to have my students evaluate and create which is what a lot of the article discussed. Overall this is more for teacher use as it is discussing 21st century skills and what they look like. Also it comes from the Teacher PD source book. I shared an article that was very similar to this that covered 10 signs of a 21st century classroom.

    I really like the way that this article breaks down 21st Century learning and dispels the myth that 21st Century Learning is the same as learning with technology.     I think this website is a great start when it comes to thinking about teaching 21st century skills. Before you can understand something, you must understand the definition of it. I think it is important to note that 21st century learning is not the same as teaching/learning with technology. This website would be especially useful for teachers, because they need to understand 21st century learning before they can teach it. Great article, thanks for sharing!

    Nicole I really enjoyed watching the video on inquiry based learning. I liked the principals quote that "inquiry based learning is really just a fancy phrase for curiousity." I also liked the young man's quote about "inquiry based learning actually makes you think." Memorization is not allowing kids to explore or think for themselves. The teachers did a nice job of explaining how the students curiousity can help guide what they are learning, while still getting the common core standards mastered. I agree that the concept of inquiry based learning can be used effectively in the classroom. I think that it can be used effectively in my library because we provide resources to help students answer questions they wants to know about. I think that inquiry based learning is something both students and teachers can benifit from. Teachers will find it much easier to teacher if their students are engaged. Allowing students to choose what they are learning about will allow them to be more engaged. While I do not know of anything else that is similar to inquiry based learning, I think that it can be very helpful for students at all levels and I believe more teachers should take advantage of it.

    Nicole, I really enjoyed watching this video as well. When I first started watching the video, there was an opening sentence that just drew my attention right away into the video. The teacher said, "I realized how much more they learn, then when I see that they take action and their applying the skills they learn in here, I feel like I have done my job as a teacher." When I start to begin my teacher's journey, I hope to feel that overwhelming joy of teaching my students, not just viable information, but also how it can be applied to the real world settings. I also was excited to hear that all the coordinator said that group based learning is all about curiosity. Which I believe is what we as future or current teachers try to accomplish everyday that we are in the classroom. I agree that the resource can be used efficiently in my own future classroom because I hope to one day teach my students how they want to be taught material, as well as how to share that material with others around them. I believe that the resource is a use for both teachers and students. The reason why is because teachers can learn from their students developing ways, as well as how the student can teach their teacher how they can best develop and comprehend the material. I am currently not aware of any other similar resources that could be considered at this time, but I am confident that as our class continues on, there will be more resources.

    "Inquiry is a fancy term for curiosity". I could not agree more. This is such a motivational video to help us as educators encourage our students to dive further in exploring ideas. Curiosity leads to the ability to create strong, driving questions. I look forward to allowing my students to take charge of their learning by encouraging them to bring up real life questions that will allow them to dive into their inquiry and research. As teachers, we must learn to take a step back and allow the students to facilitate their own learning with strong question asking!

    I love the part of this article that encourages educators to think of a lesson that needs some life and then to look at web 2.0 tools! Also there is a link that brings you to effective communication tools for web 2.0 that I found helpful. Definitely a great teacher tool so that they have a place to go to for ideas for sprucing up a lesson.     I thought this was a great article! It gives wonderful advice on how to correct the mistakes that are made with iPads in schools. This would definitely be a great resource for teachers to use to gauge how they are using iPads within their own classrooms and to remember how to keep iPad use effective and meaningful.     This is an excellent article to forward onto your administrators (as I just did!) so that they can understand the common pitfalls for technology use in the classroom. In my building, we have a classroom set of iPads that can be checked out and they have been used for all kinds of assignments and subject areas. As the kids will report, some teachers know how to use them effectively, and others are just using them for the sake of doing it. I've also read a couple of articles that I'll have to try and come back and link, but a few very large school districts have been in the news for the issues that they've been having with iPads in the classroom. The issue seemed to be that they scaled their programs way too quickly, did not train their educators properly, and did not look at the liability piece that comes along with giving students access to certain apps and features.

I feel like if you have the right apps on the iPad for the correct age group they can be very educational. Personally, young kids are learning to work this and enjoy doing this. I had a boy I nannied he loved playing on the iPad at age 4! He was allowed to play educational games and have books read to him, etc.

    Nichol, I definitely agree with the things this article is saying! I think the fact the lack of Teacher Preparation in Classroom Management of iPads is a big one. How are we suppose to be incorporating this technology when we don't even know how to use it ourselves? Many people assume it works like a laptop when it does not.     With so many articles on 'what you should do' it's a nice change of pace to see 'what your doing wrong' kind of article. I went into it thinking it was going show how students are misusing ipads, so I especially liked how it was aimed towards educators telling them how they are going to misuse them. I see a lot of what we've read for class already in this article, it helps reinforce the lessons.

    I agree with this article and its must be obvious to anyone who has used an iPad why this information is important. The iPad is a tool and is effective for certain types of task. It's not a replacement for a computer. Due to the low cost and ease of operation the wow factor could cause someone to lose sight of the purpose of application. This article is more important for the designer of curriculum and the teacher who have input. One recently large lawsuit resulted from a one billion dollar purchase of iPad for a California school district.

    Anna, I would agree that this resource will be used efficiently in my future classroom. Especially since I will become a new teacher, when I decide to enter the college of education program and have my own classroom soon. Love how it says these are all the right things that you are doing, which makes my confidence as a new future teacher for sure increases. I personally believe that this resource is used specifically for only teachers. It's also very interesting how they have bolded essential components to remember the entire time you are becoming a first teacher. Such as be consistent, be positive, use body language, and use routines. Which the last one I believe is the most important when I comes to not only becoming a great teacher, just as well as to deal with different classroom settings.     I really enjoyed the article. Made me think back to a physics teacher who had us do all kinds of things. Map stars, go to the playground and work on centrifugal force.     Sarah I think this article is well written, and a lot of parents need to read this, long with teachers. I am not sure when our society switched over to make everyone a winner. Making everyone a winner is not reality, and as a teacher that is so frustrating. I think about the scientiests who have made dramatic breakthroughs in their careers, and I would love to know how many times they failed? I am sure it was more times than they have found success, but that makes the success that much better! I do agree that this article is going to be benefical for future classrooms. I take it into this: Students might not find the "right book" on the very first try, and that is ok. If they can't read it because it is too challaning, that is ok. They can try again. I think this is an article that both teachers and students need to read because teachers need to let students fail more and students need to know that it is OK to fail! Life is full of failures...but the failure does not define you, how you handle the failure does! As far as the last question, am I aware of any other resources similar, this question does not really apply. The article focuses on the concept of failure and challanging projects and that is ok so that students know how to respond the next time.

    This is a great resource for app smashing project ideas. It is geared towards teachers, but I can see some excellent ways to incorporate app smashing into my curriculum once the resources become available. I particularly like that it broke each project down into the types of apps needed and for what purpose. This makes it easier to adapt a project to fit my particular classroom or change the topic altogether and use the formula instead.

    Great resource for everything to do with app-smashing. I especially liked the "Get the Most Out of Google" section because it talked about how to beautify Google Docs. A few teachers have complained to me that they don't like how simplified Google Docs is compared to Microsoft Word, but I want to explore these ideas more to show them how it can be spiced up. Then we could easily move forward and show the kids how to beautify their Google Docs. I've found that the kids get really into picking pretty backgrounds and fonts, lol... We just got done writing our own "Declarations of Independence," and many of them wanted to decorate theirs with aged paper, calligraphy pens, etc. Thanks!

This is useful to us as students right now because we are working on App Smashing, and I can see it being a useful resource to share with upper level students to inspire them to try something more complex. I also see it as a great resource for teachers because it offers quite a few good ideas of projects to use with App Smashing along with the apps that make it work. If you are a teacher new to app smashing, it is nice to start with a set idea rather than trying to invent your own project to go along with the apps you want to use. I look forward to implementing some of these ideas in my own classroom!

    I use Twitter for my own personal and professional use, but I need to do a better job of using it with my students. The article suggested having students tweet their thesis statement in writing class, which gave me some ideas to use in my classroom. I also liked the idea of having students participate in tweetchats with experts and professionals in the field.

    Sarah, I've been trying to use Twitter more for professional use. I think it's a great way to share resources. My biggest concern is that my students may be too young to use Twitter, but I do have parents that follow me. I once did a field experience with the Technology Teacher of the Year in 2012, and he tweeted out multiple times a day! He would take pictures of students "in action" and tweet it out to let the parents know what was going on in class. He also tweets out many resources to parents so that they can get more involved in their child's education. The student's even took pictures on the iPad and tweeted them out (and have I mentioned that these are 3rd GRADERS?!) I have never seen Twitter used in such a wonderful way!     Sarah, Thank you for sharing this article. Twitter exploded last year in my district, especially at the high school, as a form of communication for everyone. The middle school, where I am primilary at, is slowly catching on. However, I LOVE Twitter as a professional resource. I think it is like a social bookmarker. I can share the websites, and then go back when I have time to explore them more. I agree this can be used in my library to be an effective communication tool for both students and staff. I believe this resource can be used for both students and staff, but they have different purposes. As a professional, using hashtags can be very benefical to find information. It can also be a great way to network, using the Twitter Chats that go on all around the United States and the world. Students can use this to communicate. For example, the students wanted to have a blue out in honor of a student who has cancer at the football game last night. They asked the opposing team to join them in wearing blue to honor a young man who is fighting for his life. They did, and they donated an additional $425 because they found that information on Twitter! I am not aware of other resources that do that same thing. I believe Twitter is unique with their limit of 140 characters and the strong hashtag movement they begun all throughout the internet world.

I like to use Twitter for mainly professional use, but that varies from anywhere between retweeting professional articles to reminding the study body to buy their yearbooks.     This is an interesting article that I think is so important. I don't read novels with my classes as a CTE teacher, but we do read a lot of articles and sometimes I give students a time limit for reading them. Every time, some students zoom through and others don't even finish. I have found a couple great websites in the past that have adjusted reading levels of specific articles and that has been incredibly helpful for me. I do think that whole class reflection is important when reading the same text, as it gives different points of view and opens student's eyes to things they may not have realized.

    I definitely enjoyed this article. I liked reading novels as a whole group, but it was difficult if only half the class did the reading and the other half just messed around. A good resource for teachers to take a look at and consider. I agree that the reflection from all students is necessary, but that could be done without having to read the novel as a whole.     This was very interesting to read. I agreed with many of the point made by the author and I think that this article can help me as I continue to work to engage students in reading. I read aloud a novel to my 6th classes for the to just enjoy listening to. We are also currently doing a whole class novel study of Holes. I agree with the author of the article that there is room for both whole class reading of a novel and choice time. I have my student independently read a book of their choice, and we have a set aside time a few times a week where everyone in the class reads. Currently my 7th grade Literature students are reading a novel of their choice and I am just requiring that they write reading response letters to me and it has been going very well. They are engaged in reading and able to read at their own pace. I gave them a deadline for when they need to have their books finished, but it is on them to decided how much to read each week. Choice and voice are very important. This is a great resource that I can share with teachers in my collaborative teacher team.

    Thanks for sharing. I like the example of how the Italian teacher used Twitter to promote confidence in her students. Very cool! I think that social media is a great tool for both teachers and students, and I have been trying to use social media more in my own classroom. The tough part for me is that my students are in 6th grade, and I'm not sure that they are old enough to be using social media. Most of them have Instagram, but not Twitter or Facebook. I use Twitter and Facebook to reach out to parents who want to keep up with what's going on in my class, but my students want me to create an Instagram account! I'm trying to figure out how to make 2 Instagram accounts (one for professional use, one for personal use). I don't think I am able to do this, so I haven't reached out to my students via social media yet. Our form of "social media" has been Google Classroom.

    Interesting article. I totally agree with the importance of "branding." I know our school newspaper is working right now on rebranding itself to get more recognition, and social media is a big part of that. We try to have a strong presence on our yearbook's Twitter account so that we can build followers and get more kids involved. I also think that we as educators have great things going on in our classrooms and schools daily, and that a school that embraces social media has a leg up on being able to show themselves off! Our principal always says that kids and families "vote with their feet," meaning "Are they coming to our school or going to another school in town?" When we can show off the good things about our school on social media, I think that gives us an edge. :) Thanks!

    Austin, I love classes that use Poll Everywhere! I think this is a great resource for my future classroom and would love to use it but I think I would need to adapt it depending on the grade level I teach. I believe Poll Everywhere is beneficial for student and teacher use because it promotes a safe classroom environment and student engagement. Teachers can use this resource as a formative assessment and feedback tool. On the flip side students will be able to use Poll Everywhere as a way to speak up in class when they may be too shy to do so in other ways.

    I used Poll Everywhere for the first time last semester and it was a great idea. It was a really fun time interacting with the teacher in that way. It was very easy to set up and even if you don't have a smart phone you can still text in your response. We answered questions ranging from single answers all the way to little short sentences. I would definitely use this tool if I ever became a teacher because it allows students to be on their phone and contribute at the same time, instead of just being on their phones.

    I feel like this would be a great tool if it's used in the right context. I don't necessarily think elementary would be the right place for it. For the students that actually have phones you don't know if the students have texting included in their plans. You might get them in trouble with their parents, hence you get in trouble for telling them to send a text. In older grades I could see this going over very well and I've seen it used in a college class before. It's a nice change of pace in that context.

    I actually used Poll Everywhere in my Level 1 Teaching Experience and loved it! The students got to see some results of our lessons, I got a quick formative assessment, and the data was nicely organized for graphing or applying to spreadsheets!

    Schoology is a relatively new free learning management system for educators. Similar in nature to Edmodo, it currently allows the educator a few more abilities, resources, and customization that isn't offered in Edmodo.

    o Do agree or disagree that the resource can be used efficiently in your own future classroom? Explain why or why not. Yes, this feature CAN and HAS been used in my classroom to much success. Students really seem to prefer it over other LMS websites like Edmodo or Moodle because of the ease of use, different resources, mobile app, and the App Store. I use it for distributing and collecting assignments, taking polls and surveys, and for taking assessments such as quizzes and tests. o Do you believe the resource is mostly for teacher use, student use, or both? Explain your perceptions constructively. This resource is used by both the teacher and the students in order to be effective. The teacher is the one who sets up the page, creates the assignments, links, quizzes, polls, etc and the students use the site to effectively manage their learning process. It has really helped to take away the complaints and excuses that I typically get from students not knowing what they are supposed to do and where everything is located. I think one of the major advantages to Schoology is the ease of being able to find Files/Links and Assignments. o Are you aware of any similar resources that should be considered? If so, what are those resources. This task is similar to our threaded discussions. You want your comments to be constructive. Repeat this step for the remaining three bookmarks you are required to comment on. Other possible LMS websites that I have used are: Moodle, Edmodo, and Blackboard. There are many, many others as this is a highly innovative arena right now and out of all of them, Schoology seems to really impress most educators who have tried using it.

    I really like the looks of schoolology, Jeremy! I can see how this would be very useful in a junior high or high school classroom. Especially in a school that has gone 1:1! If fifth grade students had their own computers, I would definitely use this as a classroom management tool! I think this is a great way for educators, students, and parents to all be on the same page regarding assignments and class expectations. I really like the Text/SMS feature! As you had stated in your description. This is very similar to Edmodo, which I'm familiar with. Thank you for sharing!
