The Australian Curriculum - 1 views

  •
ACARA's implementation of the Australian Curriculum will enable students an equal and enriching education throughout the nation. As a future educator and studying for the past 4 years education, it is enlightening to know that in the near future, Australia as a nation will have one type of education for all states. The Australian Curriculum will enable teachers to travel throughout Australia, be able to provide students with a consistent learning experience, and will endeavor to advance and push students in a positive direction. I am all for the Australian Curriculum and am excited to know that this is the way that education is heading. The equality of the Australian Curriculum not only for educators as well as students, but for parents, knowing that their children will benefit from equal learning opportunities. The Learning Areas for the Australian Curriculum currently include: English, Mathematics, Science and History. General capabilities, a key dimension of the Australian Curriculum, are addressed explicitly in the content of the learning areas. They play a significant role in realising the goals set out in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008) - that all young people in Australia should be supported to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens. The Australian Curriculum includes seven general capabilities: Literacy Numeracy Information and communication technology (ICT) capability Critical and creative thinking Personal and social capability Ethical understanding Intercultural understanding. http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/File/C26D8605-FAA2-4B40-BE10-A15500EE1EB6. Accordingly, the Australian Curriculum must be both relevant to the lives of students and address the contempor

Assessing student learning with the ACARA and QSA Documents | ictinearlyprimaryeducation - 1 views

The first step is to recognise and reflect on what the students need to learn over the entire year. To do this teacher's must refer to two very important documents the curriculum that is relevant to their context and the QSA document.

What are ICTs?: How you use ICTs is important - 3 views

  • “while new digital technologies make a learning revolution possible, they certainly do not guarantee it” (Resnick, 2002 , p. 32).
  • in fact, is critical is “how” the technologies are used (Reimann & Goodyear, 2004)
    • Fran Gemmell

This relates back to the toolbelt theory -  we need to be mindful of the purpose for which we are using ICTs and be open to new ways of doing things and new possibilities that ICTs might offer.
    • Kate Kermode

Yes Fran I agree.. ICT's are fantastic tools within the classroom and can help with student engagement... but we must not forget the importance of tacticle objects and relating back to student context...
  • technologies by themselves have little scaleable or sustained impact on learning in schools” (Honey, McMillan & Carrig, 1999 in Hayes, 2003, p. 3)

  • valency as a conduit for communication, collaboration and knowledge building has the potential to transform learning.

This is a bit of a perpetual cycle. Technology itself doesn't guarantee an education revolution but it certainly is the driving force for needing one.

Back-To-Rule (2001) : Stager-to-Go - 0 views

  • Back-to-school time often coincides with the arbitrary banning of toys, apparel and assorted nick-knacks from our classrooms and playgrounds. It seems as if instinct takes over whenever administrators encounter something kids care about. The reflexive impulse is to forbid these objects from the educational environment
  • There are several reasons for taking a deep breath and exercising caution before enforcing the next pog embargo. We risk alienating children from school and missing potential curriculum connections.
  • High-tech devices allowed today may integrate prohibited technologies in the future. Convergence will bring increasing power to kids and headaches for administrators. What happens when the book bag contains a laptop, the laptop contains a cell phone or sneakers contain a laptop and a cell phone?
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • Reducing classroom distractions is often cited as the rationale for this rule, but this is nonsense. If you walk into Carnegie Hall or an airplane, a polite adult asks that you please turn off your phone for the comfort or safety of those around you. Why can’t teachers do the same
  • If a student disrupts the learning environment then that action should be punished in the same way we address spitballs, note passing or talking in class. It is irrational to have different rules for infractions involving electronic devices. We must address behavior, not technology

Teachers, Teaching and ICTs | infoDev - 2 views

  • ICTs are used in education in two general ways: to support existing ‘traditional’ pedagogical practices (teacher-centric, lecture-based, rote learning) as well as to enable more learner-centric, ‘constructivist’ learning models. Research from OECD countries suggests that both are useful, but that ICTs are most effective when they help to enable learner-centric pedagogies.
  • despite rhetoric that ICTs can enable new types of teaching and learning styles, for the most part they are being used to support traditional learning practices.
    • djplaner

Experience in EDC3100 supports this. People tend to use ICT to enhance existing methods, rather than for transforming what they do. Especially in Assignment 3 (which is based on Professional Experience).
  • The existence of formal and informal communities of practice and peer networks can be important tools to support ICT in education initiatives and activities. Such support mechanisms can be facilitated through the use of ICTs.
    • djplaner

This is one of the main reasons behind the push for you to create a Personal Learning Network. A PLN is a peer network that can be an important aid to your teaching.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Adequate time must be allowed for teachers to develop new skills, explore their integration into their existing teaching practices and curriculum, and undertake necessary additional lesson planning, if ICTs are to be used effectively
  • Effective teacher professional development should approximate the classroom environment as much as possible. "Hands-on" instruction on ICT use is necessary where ICT is deemed to be a vital component of the teaching and learning process. In addition, professional development activities should model effective practices and behaviors and encourage and support collaboration between teachers.
    • djplaner

      Is EDC3100 achieving this?
  • By providing access to updated and additional learning resources, ICTs can enable teacher self-learning in his/her subject area.

20 Must Have iPad Apps for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning - 5 views

  •
I like the idea of using these Ipad apps in particular *Educreations; this can be used in the classroom as a recordable whiteboard and the opportunity to put lessons on the web so students can watch them before and after class, parents can see them and can learn with child or they can reinforce the newly learnt concepts. * Toonastic; I can see this being used for reluctant writers with children with special needs where they can create animated moving pictures and record their voice to their story.
  •
This is great, have just downloaded some onto the ipad!! I will keep a look out for more apps.

Application of the SAMR model | isupport - 4 views

  • These processes are ingrained and simple. The devices we use are all around us, they are ubiquitous and the outcomes obtainable.

In other words, the technology has become mythic (in the sense suggested by Postman's 5 things to know about technological change)
    • Leigh Campbell

Does this imply that there will be a time where the subject ICT and pedagogy won't be necessary?
    • djplaner

That Leigh, is a very good question. One we'll pick up on in coming weeks (if not before)

In short, I think there will be a time when a course like ICT and Pedagogy won't be needed.

A reason to use ICTs in learning and teaching?

  • Technology is used a lot but only in low level uses (ie Facebook, and Google search). If asked to perform a “complex” task such as creating a presentation or editing a photograph most teachers would come unstuck.

Does this apply to you? Has your studies given you an opportunity to move beyond?
    • Nicole Hunter

I have used new software and packages during my uni course that I wouldn't have otherwise experienced. It is great to be pushed into that uncomfortable stage while learning a new program but the achievement feeling when you have worked it out is great and very rewarding. There is so much out there that could be used in the classroom but you need to seek it out!
    • Ali Meadows

Until I started EDC3100 I wouldn't have considered myself a 'low level user'. I am however making progress. It is challenging at times since there are so many resources that can be applied. Without this course I would have been in the dark about the possibilities.
  • We know when we have achieved successful technology integration: it is when we use technology without even thinking about it.
    • Kate Dugdale

I love this.  Successful technology integration is when it is just part of what we do.  Like postman's ecological thinking.
  • as technology evolves we must evolve too

Workforce transformation: How to future-proof your job - Yahoo7 Finance Australia - 0 views

  • According to KPMG demographer Bernard Salt, the great challenge of the future will be for workers to embrace huge change.
  • Salt says that while all workers will need technology proficiency, it is in fact ‘soft skills’ that must be taught to Australian children. ‘This is the skill of being fluid, flexible, agile, social,” Salt told Yahoo7 Finance.
