This task was also inclusive in regards to students who might have had learning difficulties. It provided a platform for these students to express themselves creatively through the use of colours, images, written text or a variety of materials such as button, beads, different fabrics that they could cut out and paste, etc.

      This reminds me of a student with ASD at a school I am aware of that wrote his own book about the struggles of making friends. It was an amazing experience for this boy, his twin sister illustrated it for him and his best friend assisted. He performed readings of the book for all the classrooms. Such an amazing experience for the child and the school.

      Another awesome result of this activity is that it makes literacy possible and enjoyable for all  students. Not all students enjoy or succeed in reading, but show far more engagement with writing, especially when given freedom of expression, and encouraged to write about something relevant and enjoyable to them.

    Reasons as to why I thought this was a good idea: - students and parents are involved - everyone in the class, all learning abilities, got involved - it gave writing a sense of purpose for the class - students could relate it to interests and real life concepts. - students took charge of what they are going to write

    Great apps Amanda!! I'm in the process of teaching my six year old to read and write as she attends an all Chinese kindergarten and is not learning any English. After an eight hour school day she really resists any more work that I try to do with her, which is very frustrating for both of us. She does however LOVE the iPad and I'll be trying some of the kindergarten specific apps mentioned in the article. Hopefully she won't even realise she is learning while playing. When we return to Australia she will be behind in reading (as our main focus for her right now is Mandarin) and will require targeted help.

    Very helpful site!! The world is changing and we (as future teachers) should all be exposed to all the various ways that we can engage students in constructing and actively engaging in their own learning. If I was a child with dufficulties in reading I would rather engage with an Ipad rather than any other traditional way of teaching. Again this site is a proof of what a useful tool ICT can be and the positive results it gives when used in the right way.

    "Type Description Descriptive writing Not reflective. Description of events that occurred/report of literature. No attempt to provide reasons/justification for events. Descriptive reflection Reflective, not only a description of events but some attempt to provide reason/justification for events or actions but in a reportive or descriptive way. For example, "I chose this problem-solving activity because I believe that students should be active rather than passive learners". Recognition of alternate viewpoints in the research and literature which are reported. For example, Tyler (1949), because of the assumptions on which his approach rest suggests that the curriculum process should begin with objectives. Yinger (1979), on the other hand argues that the "task" is the starting point. Two forms: Reflection based generally on one perspective/factor as rationale. Reflection is based on the recognition of multiple factors and perspectives Dialogic reflection Demonstrates a "stepping back" from the events/actions leading to a different level of mulling about, discourse with self and exploring the experience, events, and actions using qualities of judgements and possible alternatives for explaining and hypothesising. Such reflection is analytics or/and integrative of factors and perspectives and may recognise inconsistencies in attempting to provide rationales and critique, for example. While I planned to use mainly written text materials I became aware very quickly that a number of students did not respond to these. Thinking about this now there may have been several reasons for this. A number of students, while reasonably proficient in English, even though they had been NESB learners, may still have lacked some confidence in handling the level of language in the text.     I have often used word searchers in lesson plans on placements for two reasons, I find it a good activity to settle students into the classroom or begin a lesson and it can used to activate prior knowledge. An example I have used is teaching fractions the students had to used prior knowledge and find words the ycould remember about fractions with the word search.
