what are the different types of telecommunications euipment. - 2 views

  •
This article introduces the telecommunication equipments. There are many types of telecommunication equipments, such as the telephones, computers and radios. All of these equipments transmit the signals by internet. Then, the article mainly talks about the switches and routers. They help to transmit process, amplify, and direct packets of information to their destinations. This type of equipment has a greater capacity and clearer signals. Newer packet switching telecommunications equipment technology has also increased the transmission capacity of each line. Another one is cable television industry. Cable technology is rapidly becoming more like telecommunications networks. Cable television is becoming an interactive medium, allowing customers to request information and receive real-time responses, much like the Internet or automated telephone systems. Private branch exchange (PBX) switchboards are a type of telecommunications equipment used by businesses to relay incoming, outgoing, and interoffice telephone calls at one location or organization. In the end, the article point that the advances in telecommunications technology means it may be difficult to find a telecommunications job for those providing operator services. In the future, the telecommunications equipment installers and repairers will be in greater demand.

Tech Trends: In-Room Telephones | Hotel Management - 2 views

  • Although much in-room telephone development has focused on the move to VoIP technology, there are still ways to upgrade the telephone hardware to continue to satisfy guests and protect the bottom line.
  • Bittel Americas is the integration of the phone, alarm and dock with USB port.
  • “I’d rather leave my iPhone on the nightstand than on the desk. We recognized this as a universal issue for all hotels and figured there’s something we can do to provide an integrated device that includes a phone, alarm, mp3 iPhone dock and so on.

  • adding a desktop device, but it takes up too much space
  • very little revenue comes from phones. The less money hoteliers spend maintaining phones, the better.”
  • That’s people’s content on there, they have almost all their info at their fingertips on that device. … An in-room device probably makes more sense if we were to design our product in such a way that works well with these smartphones instead of trying to compete against them.”
  •
This article talks about how hotels are trying to upgrade the in room phones to better serve the guest they receive. They have started to think of ways to integrate the phones to have USB ports for charging smart phones or thinking of ways to actually have a tablet available on the night stand. Some companies have even decided to downgrade their phones to save on maintaince cost since most people have smart phones or tablets with all their information on it.
  •
I think this is a great article that you found. It is true that people do not really use the in-room telephones anymore unless it is to call down to the front desk and then still the hotel is not making money on it. If they had an all-in-one phone, alarm, USB port, mp3 people would get a lot more use and be happier with it. These devices should start to come to major hotels and see how they work and then go from there to be everywhere

Rackspace Private Cloud: Instant OpenStack - Network Computing - 2 views

  • While installing Linux and OpenStack isn't difficult--there's a complete set of instructions on OpenStack.org--Rackspace Private Cloud simplifies installation by pre-configuring most common options, reducing some 2,000 variables to 10 installation steps for the controller node and seven steps for the compute node. This allows a company to launch OpenStack faster, and also means Rackspace has a known configuration, which simplifies its commercial support.
  • Rackspace now has its OpenStack-based public cloud service, Open Cloud, and private cloud software. Work still needs to be done to achieve a hybrid cloud model that will allow an enterprise to manage public- and private-cloud resources from a single management station and easily move VMs between them.
  •
Rackspace updates its Private Cloud system which is more accessible, powerful, and secure. It plans to deliver two versions of this system-enterprise with installation fee and private for free. All of the most updated applications are involved in this system such as KVM hypervisor, Opscode Chef, Image Service, and more. The only missing application is openstack storage, which will be available next season. Compared with previous version or other comparable products, new Private Cloud is more accessible, powerful, and secure. For example, new users can install this software within seven steps no matter what system they have. Then they can share more than 2000 applications from rackspace, most of which are free for individual clients. In my opinion, the most innovative output of this update is the hybrid cloud model. It allows an enterprise to manage both public and private resources based on a single platform. Moreover, it is quite convenient for them to move VMs between that multi-based clouds. We can make a positive forecast that this application will be more mature after getting connected with OpenStack Storage. Thus, it is a good alternative for both individual and enterprise users seeking for secure network environment.

NCR Silver brings breakthrough technology, competitive edge to small businesses | NCR - 2 views

  • Millions of small businesses have long been at a technology disadvantage, using antiquated, time-consuming methods of taking payments, tracking sales and inventory, managing records and reviewing key data.
  • NCR Silver is a simple and affordable cloud-based point-of-sale (POS) software platform that enables small business owners and entrepreneurs to take payments and manage their entire business with one POS solution,
  • NCR Silver comes complete with customer service only an established company like NCR can provide, delivering accessible, affordable, cloud-based technology to small business people who make up the backbone of our economy
    • Michael Anthony

Yes, but what types of customer service is being provided? What are the benefits to the customer of having their customer service?
  •
The article above describes a new innovative system for the typical small business owner. If you are in need of some simple, easy to use technology then this might be the article for you. It's called NCR Silver, a new POS system capable of performing all the necessary function of operating a business all with one solution. It has the ability to track sales, manage inventory and records, and review key data. With all these features at the disposal of a small business owner, it could do a great deal in helping them increase their businesses profitability. The software is a cloud-based system and has the ability to be used on all portable Apple products. It is like having your business in the palm of your hand, literally! NCR Silver is already being used in Georgia throughout the Atlanta area and is slowly gaining popularity. As the cloud-computing idea takes hold, I believe this software will be found nation wide. Below is a link that demonstrates the software in use. ENJOY! www.youtube.com/user/NCRSilver
  •
I like the mobile being discussed here, can these be expanded into tracking devices I wonder. I don' t like the rather vague description being provided on there customer service polic. It makes me weary of using the software if I don't see any benefits listed under customer service or troubleshooting. Would someone be there to assist if I was trouble using there system or if goes down. What assurances are provided? Warranty, Insurance, etc. It should be more than just we provide customer service.

Americans Want to Fly Wireless - 2 views

  • Americans don’t want to unplug from their portable communication devices when flying.
  • 80 percent of respondents want the option to connect to the Internet during their flight.  An additional 66 percent would like to be allowed to talk on their cell phone.
  • This is good news for airlines that already offer wireless services to their passengers.  However,

  • Americans are reticent to pay for Wi-Fi,
  • In addition, while flyers would also like the option to use mobile phones mid-flight,
  • 55 percent of respondents were concerned that such usage could put the safety of their plane at risk.
  • “Not only do American travelers want to stay ‘plugged in’ during their flights, but there is also a much higher tolerance for in-flight mobile phone use than we expected,”
  • “It is good to see that the FAA is looking at ways to satisfy this demand through possible new allowances.”
  •
Wireless networking is a important application of computer networks. And this news is very interesting. Because with my own experiences during traveling, I found out that a lot of passengers do not want to turn-off their phones during their flying time, some may choose to turn to the fight mode. And when I took Qatar airline, I found out that they install the wireless services for people to send message or make phone calls. That was the first time I experience this kind of service, I was very excited but calmed down when I saw the expensive fees I need to pay if I want to use. So I think it is time for FAA to look ways which can satisfy travelers' demand through possible new allowances.
  •
I am one of those Americans that have a hard time disconnecting from technology when boarding an aircraft. I usually fly American Airlines and a majority of their airplane offer Wi-Fi available for purchase, I don't mind paying $12.95 so that I can stay entertain, I can't wait to hear the chime at 10,000 feet followed with the message from the flight crew telling me that "it is now safe to use electronic devices." On May 16th, 2012, Virgin Atlantic announced that passengers would be able use cell phones onboard the airplane utilizing VoIP. Can you imagine this technology aboard a plane from Los Angeles to New York? http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Virgin-Atlantic-Cell-Phones-Planes-In-Flight-Cost,15642.html

MVI Launches Industry-first Mobile Device Management Solution for Hospitality :: Hotel ... - 2 views

  • “Our aim was to take full advantage of today’s travelers’ increasing affinity with mobile devices, so implementing a device management system to cater to our specific requirements was of paramount importance,” said Sylvia Chung, General Manager of the L’Hotel élan. “With MVI’s MDM Solution we can ensure the security and manageability of the devices as well as guests’ privacy while using them without compromising flexibility and usability.”
  • MVI has launched an industry-first Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution that provides effective management of smart mobile devices to support interactive, live and on-demand video services in hotels.
  •
This article introduces the hospitality industry's first Mobile Management device solution. MVI, an Asia-focused hotel technology provider, partnered with IBM to develop the new enterprise class MDM solution. The MDM solution provides effective management of smart mobile devices to support interactive, live and on-demand video services in hotels. The usage of this new device was recently incorporated at the L'Hotel`elan in Hong Kong. An iPad is provided for guest use in all the hotel's rooms, and it serves as an entertainment device, offering eGuest services such as TV channels and interactive guest services including in-room dining. The MDM solution is fully integrated with hotel PMS and POS systems, which allows the device to become a part of a hotel's overall management ecosystem. This device not only provides the features of an entertainment device for guests, but it also offers hotels unique management features. A few of the features include customized workflow to streamline the installation of hotels' managed apps on mobile device, comprehensive push-based notification management, availability for all Apple mobile devices, and effective protection of guests' own data and personal information for apps that required login. I recently went on a site visit at Turnberry Isles Resort with one of my classes. While on the tour, the lady conducting the tour mentioned that with the rate technology is advancing in the near future many of the hotel procedures will be completed via Ipad (such as checking in and out of the hotel). After reading this article, it seems as if the near future has already arrived!!!
  •
I really liked this article. Personally, I do not have a good experience dealing with people at the front desk. Many people do not want to deal with employees and would find this method a lot easier and stress free. Now you can check in and out from both your TV in your room and also the iPad device. Great article Nicole!

"84 percent of respondents indicated that they were using their GDS platform the same amount or more often than in the past, with 35 percent stating that they are using GDS more." This study also states that the annual GDS shopping displays will be over $50 million in 2011, which will increase more than a million bookings compared to 2010. There was another survey that was done and they surveyed different travel agents from across the world that were subscribed to a major GDS system. Hotels Are Going High-Tech. Is That Good? - TIME - 2 views

  •
Technology is part of today's culture. It is almost impossible therefore, to imagine a hotel without some level of technology. If nothing else, even the smallest hotel is likely to have a property management system. Technology increases the efficiency of the staff and enhances the experience of the guest. Technology can be overdone. Cost plays a role in technology, as it does with every management decision. The relative price of technology has been in a downward spiral for many years, however, new products come come onto the market at high initial cost.

Hi Nicole, Great article! I think that some technology has definitely eliminated some jobs for humans because we used to not have internet at the click of a button and you had to call the operator or go to a library and find the information but now that we have it in our hands at all times who needs people to help us get answers, we just look it all up online. Technology is a positive thing in our lives but sometimes it may be a little too overdone like you said.
  •
Great example of too much of a good thing can be bad. Technology can be a wonderful things, making our lives more effecient and accommodating, however as human we yearn for interaction. Specially in the hotels and restaurants, one the the greatest things I remember as kid was being checked it at a hotel. I felt grand; important that someone knew my name and welcomed me. With today's technology, that is a rare exisitance. I check myself in, swipe my phone to acess my room, order room service from my TV and check out withour ever interacting with a human, lets just say I would prefer the brass keys and red tassels.

New "ATM" takes old phones and gives back green | R&D Mag - 2 views

  •
In the video we had about e-wastes, people cannot really know where their dumped devices would be and most of them are not really care about recycling. This new ATM can collect used devices directly from users and the company which is doing this is definitely certified by government which will follow the laws and recycle them. This machine eliminates the possible that people just dump the devices, because they will be motivated by the value of recycling;. This is not really a cutting edge technology, but the meaning of this is that it can increase the percentage of e-wastes recycling.
  •
I think it's pretty sad to see that people would try and take advantage of such a wonderful environmental and economic system. Asides from now being able to turn in your cell phone for monetary value and recycling purposes, you can also donate your used to battered women shelters, I have done this before. Although, the phone would not fully work if there was no service provider, women would still be able to make emergency phone calls should they have to.

What Are the Different Types of Key Card Systems? - 2 views

Marilyn, This is an interesting article because I never knew the progression of hotel key cards. I do not think anyone did and we just assume they started somewhere simple and got to where they are at now. Key Cards with RFID seem as though they are the best type of key but also very expensive for the hotels, especially if it is a large property. We only see the one kind of key card now in hotels and to me it seems secure but who knows what information is actually stored on that card. Great article !

500 Million Reasons to Launch Online Ordering - 1 views

  •
This article explains that more and more companies are adding online ordering directly to their Facebook fan pages. Their software is directly linked to the internet, thereby allowing customers to order through facebook. If a potential new client was browsing the internet at work, unsure of what to order for lunch that day, this is very convenient. Once ordered, the activity is posted to that person's wall, for all their friends to see. It's a great marketing strategy and a way for word about that particular restaurant to get out.

Buffalo Wild Wings added QSR's automated kitchen display hardware and software to over 40 of their locations. These locations are currently using a ticket-less automated system in the kitchen and have found there are faster "ticket" times, they are better able to determine problem areas in the kitchen, and are able to evaluate employee performance during busy times in the restaurant. When using a "ticket-less" system it is easier to track orders and/or mistakes that may happen because you do not lose the ticket (which is a common occurrence) I currently work at a restaurant that was looking into QSR's automated kitchen system, but we have not done that at this point, but we will move to that eventually. However we do have QSR's newest seating and wait list management technology and it does make a world of difference when managing seating and a waiting list in a large restaurant.

Notes From an IT Service Shop: Every Hotel Computer Should Have at Least Two Internet B... - 1 views

This article is about why hotels should use atleast two internest browsers. Simple yet very informative article about how two browsers can not only ease operations but also prevent problems that sometimes occur in browsers. The article is filled with lot of day to-day problems of browers which can be so easily be prevented. Having a hospitality business with so much online activity in todays world , this article shows how simple it is to manage online activities. A must read.

Actually I use two internet browsers on my computer. The Firefox and the 360. They have their own advantages and I use them to open separate pages. And when I used to internship in business center in hotel, I found it is really necessary because according to kinds of requirements from customer, only one browser sometimes can not satisfy customers. So no matter for what reason, for customer service, for information collected, or development of hotel, there should have at least two browsers.
  •
Most of the time, two browsers work perfectly fine on the laptop. I think it's necessary to install to browsers just in case one of them doesn't work fine sometimes. However, the two browsers on my laptop would conflict with each other. There was a period that I could not open them at the same time otherwise my laptop will completely shut down. For the hospitality industry, installing two browsers may benefit the guests. It saves guests time and money when they use the computer devices with two browsers because it provide them two ways to browse the internet.
  •
I totally understand that there are lots of benefits to have at least two browsers. Actually I used to have more than two. And I was happy at that time that I have more than one browser because my Internet Explorer was infected by a virus and my computer would shut down by itself with no reason each time I opened the explorer. I didn't have time to fix my computer and remove the virus because I was preparing a final paper and I had to turn it in next day. So I just easily searched for information through other website browsers. For a hotel, that would be more important to keep the daily operation smooth with more than one browser in case that one of them was not working.

Hotels.com Survey Finds Free Wi-Fi is the Make it or Break it Factor in Hotel Booking |... - 1 views

  •
Hotels.com recently conducted a hotel amenities survey where they asked potential travelers insight as to what amenities mean the most to them when booking a hotel room. An overwhelming response for free wi-fi in their hotel rooms indicated how important this perk is to travelers. "35 percent reported it is the simple amenity they want to see more in hotels, with 31 percent wishing it would become a standard in all hotels in 2012." Other interesting aspects of the article were that guests also stated their favorite modern in-room amenity was the use of iPads for guest services, local information and personal use. There is a bit of irony in the fact that widespread use of these devices in hotels amongst business travelers may contribute to poor free and paid wi-fi networks. What would be interesting to me is what quality of wi-fi do these respondents expect for free wi-fi services, as as we discussed in another article the quality of these wi-fi networks even at a paid level are not performing to the standard of the average business traveler. Often times in a scenario where something is free, you can expect to get what you pay for.

Visa Europe predicts contactless payments will become mainstream in the UK with 20 mill... - 1 views

  •
This article, posted on the Visa website discusses how McDonald's UK plans to implement a new type of payment method for customers. This "cash free" payment methods allows for customers to use only debit or credit cards and pay up to 15 euros. Visa states that it is a quick and easy way for customers to purchase a coffee or lunch at a fast food establishment. As stated in the article, this form of payment helps companies save money with regards to operating costs and improves risk management because less cash is available at the restaurant. In my opinion, I believe this is a quick and convenient way for customers to get in and out of the restaurant - which is essentially what a fast food establishment caters to do. The down side of this new hardware addition to McDonald's is that it may reduce the amount of jobs in each store because the computers will be able to do the work, humans once did.
  •
To me this is just a given. Of course contactless payments are going to increase. They already are especially in big cities where everyone is always on the go. I know that I barely ever have cash on me. I end up having to run to an ATM. Paying with cards is the easiest and an fastest way of paying for things.

I agree with both comments. I just wonder why they cap the amount to £15, which converts to $19.25. Is that to encourage individual transactions? To clarify, the only thing I can think of is they are trying to discourage people from purchasing for others. But that doesn't really make sense since the purpose of contactless payments is increasing convenience for the customer who wants to make on-the-go purchases and thus increasing profit for the business. Just something I was wondering.

StorefrontBacktalk » Blog Archive » Android Is About To Truly Kill The POS Bu... - 1 views

  • That argument worked when tablets were $500 and even $400. But now that Android tablets have fallen below $100, the argument falls apart. You could have four spares in the backroom and still be ahead. It’s not even about mobile POS versus traditional; it’s purely about price.

This article talks about the changes happening in the restaurant and retail industry regarding POS systems. Since the appearance of the cheap tablet business owners have been asking why do we have to spend $600 on a POS station if a simple tablet cost $100 and has the same computing power. Imagine a restaurant where you come in sit down and order your food and drinks on a tablet that is on the table, a food runner brings you your order, and whenever you are ready you can swipe your credit card on the tablet and get a receipt send to your email. This reduces payroll for the business owner, and also makes the industry a less capital intensive one. All that is left is for a company to write the programs, sell the tablets, and give the same kind of support you would get with any other system.
