Data security has come under greater scrutiny for all businesses in recent years, with larger fines and penalties being awarded for contemporary data breaches.
-
Choosing the right partner and hosting environment for your property can be complicated, but the property-management system (PMS) selected will play a critical role in securing your confidential data

Protecting your guests’ data is equally important as preserving their physical safet

This article discusses the important issue of data security especially when it comes to a hotel's PMS. It goes into two areas of particular vulnerability: the booking engine used by hotels and the actual PMS. By hosting a 3rd party booking engine off site, it is still the responsibility of the hotel to secure and keep guests' date secure. They need to ensure that their partners are adhering to proper compliance and rolling updates for security. The second area of focus is the PMS itself and how it is hosted: whether locally or through a cloud based system. Regardless of the location of the host, data security is the responsibility of the hotel.

GDS is a worldwide computerized reservation network used as a single point of access for reserving airline seats, hotel rooms, and rental cars by travel agents, online reservation sites and large corporation
-
advances in internet and mobile technologies pose a huge threat to GDS. The number of agents using GDS fell from 90 percent in 2005 to 75 percent in 2011.
-
Some observers forecast that there may not be any GDS, at least in the way we know it, in a few years.

This article spoke about the history of GDS as well as different opinions on what the future holds for GDS. The main points of the article included a comparison in percentages of travel agents using GDS now and in the past. It seems that GDS has a chance of surviving the downfalls of direct booking if they are able to evolve with technology and consumer needs.
-
modern technology/applications has taken over where most people can make their own flight reservations without an agent. But even with this change GDS is still going strong and that is mainly because most people feel safer when they go to an agent to make their reservations.
-
the article discuss the large amounts airlines pay for GDS companies in incentives and they are trying to find different ways to reduce sales through other platforms and try to reach consumers directly. such methods like offering a good online reservation website offering better prices to consumers or raising the prices sold to GDSs.

The guest now has a variety of choices for communicating including fax over the Internet, e-mail, cell phones, calling cards and now even Internet-based phones. All these alternatives offer a less expensive means of communicating than using the traditional hotel guestroom phone and other services such as fax.

With technology advancing, hotels are putting their best effort to keep up with new ways of telecommunication. As mentioned in the article, the fax machine used to be the most popular way of telecommunication back in the day. Now hotels have been trying to figure out the best ways to gain guest to use their telecom infrastructure since the fax machine has become outdated. The problem is guest don't want spend a lot of money making a phone call so the hotels have had to create packages for guests to use the phone. They would include unlimited calls and high-speed internet for a certain amount a day which could attract some guest but not all. Guest don't find the need to use their phones because mostly everyone has a phone, tablet, or pocket computer. Hotels can catch the guest attention by the internet because none of these devices are no good without internet connection. Making packages with unlimited calls and high speed internet is a start to reeling in guest. It all comes down to what can the hotel offer in means of telecommunication that a guest's device cant. One concept they have is the land-line has much better connection and speed. Having that speed and connection is very important to a guest. It is going to take time and trial and error but there are always alternate ways to reel guest in to use their ways of telecommunication.

What is Network Redundancy and Why Does It Matter? - 0 views
-
The underlying concept of redundant networks is simple. Without any backup systems in place, all it takes is one point of failure in a network to disrupt or bring down an entire system. Network redundancy is the process of adding additional instances of network devices and lines of communication to help ensure network availability and decrease the risk of failure along the critical data path.
-
All valuable data should be backed up regularly, preferably in another location. A good data center location strategy maps out the best places to replicate and store data so it can be easily accessed in the event that other redundant systems fail and the main network goes down. By using more than one data center, companies can ensure that even if some disaster occurs, they will be able to carry on with minimal disruption.
-
Colocation data centers regularly conduct tests to assess the integrity of their backup systems and redundant networks. They can test different connections by physically disconnecting hardware to make sure failover occurs as anticipated. If things do not go as planned during testing, data center managers then create an after-action report that lists the items they need to fix as a result of the testing. They also create a procedure to follow for both automatic and manual flip over.

Network redundancy is the process of adding network devices and other instances of communication lines to help ensure network availability and reduce the risk of failures on critical data paths. One of the first steps in the network redundancy plan is to create a network strategy that reviews the existing infrastructure. A high-quality hosted data center should have an extensive backup system to ensure that it is always available. All valuable data should be backed up regularly, preferably in another location. By using multiple data centers, companies can ensure that even if certain disasters occur, they will be able to proceed with minimal losses. In addition, a well-maintained UPS system ensures that the server can be switched from power to backup generator power without losing any data or applications.
-
A network outage whether it is due to a cyber attack or simple human error can be devastating to a company. It makes them look very bad, damaging their reputation, and can cost the business millions of dollars. Network Redundancy can help ensure network availability and decrease the risk of failure. There are 2 forms of redundancy. Fault Tolerance where there is a mirrored backup system that takes over with no loss of service, and High Availability where the backup servers take over and restart applications that were running on the failed server.

Cloud Based Restaurant Management Software Transforms the Industry - 0 views
-
Cloud based restaurant management software is changing the way restaurant operators can do business and how they make and manage technology investments.
-
In the past, in order to operate restaurant management software, each restaurant location was required to have servers “on-premise” which is technology-speak for “in the restaurant.”
-
Simply put, cloud based restaurant management software relies on a network of remote (off-premise) servers that are hosted on the internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer.

As cloud computing software continues to become more powerful, restaurants may want to evaluate the potential swtich from on site servers to a cloud based restaurant management solution. Cloud based solutions allow data to be accessed from anywhere and make tracking sales trends and manage costs much easier. Most cloud based systems also include APIs that allow them to work in tandem with other cloud based softwares that a restaurant may need. Additionally, just like with any general cloud computing software, these cloud based systems are generally much cheaper to implement than purchasing physical equipment and cloud based solutions also offer an easy way to scale a business.

It's time for travel companies to see the cloud for what it is, the passport to future value. All sections can benefit from this technology including hotels, airlines, and airports. This is the best time to invest into technology to benefit the industry by taking a deep relook at strategy, organization, practices, technology, and talent function. As travel is being rebuilt, cloud-related investments will deliver higher returns on capital than investment in new aircraft, new hotels, and new ships. This is the perfect time to invest into cloud adoption.

What is SaaS (Software as a Service)? Everything You Need to Know - 0 views
-
Software as a service (SaaS) is a software distribution model in which a cloud provider hosts applications and makes them available to end users over the internet. In this model, an independent software vendor (ISV) may contract a third-party cloud provider to host the application.
-
Products range from personal entertainment, such as Netflix, to advanced IT tools.
-
As a result, companies using SaaS applications are not tasked with the setup and maintenance of the software. Users simply pay a subscription fee to gain access to the software, which is a ready-made solution.

The most immediate positive of cloud computing is If you implement a cloud-based software for your hotel, it can be accessed from any computer you’d like– your software and data is no longer limited to one back office computer.
-
One of the most immediate, positive aspects of cloud computing is that the actual computing, or processing, is much faster.
-
when you have something sitting in the cloud, there is usually a respective API that will allow for different software to communicate and exchange date as needed. This lowers the I.T. requirements exponentially, not to mention makes it easier for future expansion upon the software.
