Get Tax Breaks For Going Green | Computerworld - 0 views

  • As if significant savings on electricity bills weren't enough, IT managers have another reason to embrace environmentally friendly IT practices: a bevy of federal, state and local tax incentives that could tip the scales to make green IT projects financially attractive. However, companies have been slow to take advantage of the available incentives, essentially leaving money on the table. One reason is that many tax incentives are for solar energy, which is still expensive. Another reason is that CIOs -- who don't often talk with tax experts -- may not be aware of what's available. Among the federal tax incentives is the Energy-Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction, part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005. (Subsequent legislation extended this deduction through 2013.) Companies can claim a tax deduction of $1.80 per square foot on new or existing buildings by installing interior lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation or hot water systems that reduce a building's total energy and power costs by 50% or more. "If an IT manager is looking to retrofit or construct a data center, this particular incentive is absolutely appropriate -- almost a given," says Jenny Bravo, a director at Deloitte Tax LLP. "A 50% reduction [in energy and power costs] for a well-planned data center is absolutely doable."

This is very interesting. I am not seeing any articles on green incentives pertaining to I.T. except for green building initiatives.

  •
Should brands be using Facebook Timeline? Yes they certainly should. With the ability to post photos and videos, brands are given a great oppotunity to advertise themselves with more than just plain words to see a significant boost. Comments and likes from fans and non fans will increase the popularity of a brand. Facebook Time like has become the new way for marketing at a low or no cost.

It would be interesting to see their growth because of the chronological set up of Facebook Timeline. Pictures are also very effective.

This article talks about the future trend of the hospitality security, which is technology is opening new doors to hotel safety.  The author introduces some different technologies such as Contact-less Smartcards and RFID that hotels like New York's Plaza Hotel are currently using. Finger print or cellphone wipe technology is also used instead of card, which should be more safe. Some hotels even use video-capture systems to make sure the security is perfect. After introducing these technologies, the author also talks about the privacy issues. Because some customers are not willing to be on cameras. However, though some of them are concerning about this issue, an expert predicts that new security measures will eventually become such a part of everyone's everyday lives that he or she will become the norm. All in all, this article gives us the trend that more and more technologies will be used for hotel security in the future.

I think PR representatives should address the privacy controversy surrounding radio frequency identification technology with a safety campaign. This may help consumers realize that they are not in the privacy of their own home when they are in the hallways of hotels and cruise ships and the cameras/tracking could help protect them. As long as the data collected is not misused these technologies will continue to be present in these locations.
  •
It's pretty important for the hospitality industry to present these new technologies as wonderful security measures. People could be put off by knowing they have to swipe their finger to get into a bathroom. The success of these technologies depends on effective marketing and proven security measures that ensure collected information about a traveller will not be used in unethical ways.
  •
Interesting article it is. Security is always the big issue for hospitality. I would like to stay in a hotel that is using finger print as the key card of the hotel because i believe that is much safer than cards that anybody can access my room by using the card.
  •
In this article all of the new trends for hotel security are described and examples of where they are being implemented are given. Thanks to technological innovations hotel safety is heading into a whole different level. Now key cards are being change to more sophisticated ones that need just to be waved to open a room door. In the near future it is expected for these cards to be used as a payment method and to check-in and check-out. In the U.S biometrics technology is starting to be used by a small number of properties not only for guests to access their rooms but for employees. Facial recognition systems with the ability of tracking guests and employees are also being implemented. This system helps to improves customer service as it helps to really understand guest's preferences, as enormous amount of information can be extracted as they are constantly being monitored. Other technologies are also being developed. The most amazing ones are the systems that track other unique human characteristics as the way a person walks or it's DNA.
  •
The technology of hotel changes very fast, such as swipe of a cellphone or print of a finger, or the contact cards that need just be waved to allow room access. It is like the cruise world's one card system, these cards may soon make hotel stays easier by allowing guests to pay for services, as well as to check- in and check-out, through a single device. If customers lost their cards on cruise, the radio frequency identification and smartphone will provide customers their code via text message, so they can play back the code to unlock your room door. But more card free security systems are on the way. If you want to get into your room at New York's SoHo Loft , you are going to have to lift a finger. The Nine Zero Hotel in Boston us the technology to make the property safer all round ,that means non-staff members and intruders can not access the property. Systems that track the other qualities that make each human unique in development as well. The Houston's largest hotel has a facial recognition system that can identify and track guests and an annual $16 million payroll ,the system offers benefits such as employee time theft monitoring and prevention for the hotel. But with 1200 rooms worth of luggage in transit the system makes it a lot easier to find lost or misdirected bags The Wolfe feels that in addition to the biometrics and high-tech methods currently being deployed ,one of the greatest security measures of late is actually low tech.

The full name of RFID is radio-frequency identification. RFID is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking. Some tags require no battery and are powered by the electromagnetic fields used to read them. Others use a local power source and emit radio waves (electromagnetic radiation at radio frequencies). The tag contains electronically stored information which can be read from up to several metres (yards) away. Now RFID in hospitality industry as a tool is used for improving service quality, customer satisfaction, market share, and profitability. As the new technology apply into hotel security, the hotels change their ways in the blink of an eye, or the swipe of a cell phone, or the print of a finger. With futuristic systems like scent and iris scanners and digital facial-recognition, hotel security is being taken to the high level and some of the luxury hotels begin to use RFID system. Usually customers will worry about lose the card of hotel. Then they can not open the door and even need to pay extra money to buy a new card. But now security systems in some hotels do away with cards altogether. Because of RFID system, customers can use the iPhone connect with the system. When a guest checks into a hotel and provides their phone number, they get an encrypted sound code via text message. Guests can play back the code to unlock your room door.

i think there are some factors to consider. Customer Service - Many opportunities for "great" customer service are lost if guest and employee interaction is diminished. In many cases, the front desk staff give the first impression that a guest experiences. This first "experience" can be crucial for referring the guest to other property amenities, i.e. spa, restaurants, lounge, pool, attractions, etc. Often, the front desk staff are acting as the concierge and resolvers of guest issues.

this article talks about new technology that is being implemented throughout out US and the world. Old key cards are now going to be replaced with even older standard keys or the radio frequency identification card that can be waived in front of the door to gain access. Also, there is a technology that will sent an encrypted sound text to guest;s cell phone, which when played back will open the door.  It talks about technology that tracks all employees, guests and their luggage.  There are several concerned that travelers have about their privacy, but article stated that it all depends on the type of the traveler.  Also, the face recognition technology used in Houston's largest hotel remembers guests names and when they return, guests are greeted by name.  Article concludes that even with all this technology, the best security is provided through interdependence of travelers and employees.

Technology in the hotel travel and tourism industry will be changing drastically in the near future, from the swipe of a cell phone, print of a finger, facial recognition, iris scanners, security is going to be taken to the next level. the plastic key cards will soon no longer exist. Radio frequency I'd cards are the new thing, where guest will use this for preferences for everything, from charging things to your room, preference of floor type to pillow choice, chick in and out etc. systems that track the other qualities of a person instead of using a key or card are in development as well. There are research going on how to open the door and. Lose wi just the persons walk and movements. Some people think these new security technologies are awesome, while some think they are not, people dont want to be watched 24/7while on vacation they just want to enjoy there stay. But in today's society all travelers are becoming interdependent on each other for safety and security.

Why your IT project may be riskier than you think - 0 views

  •
This article is focussed on the risk involved if the proper impact study is not undertaken prior to implementation of extensive IT projects. Several multinational companies were referenced in the article, highlighting failures with smooth implementation resulting in the loss of millions and sometimes billions. Below is a summary of some companies referenced in article and the impact of IT implementation gone wrong: 1. Levi Strauss: In 2003 Levi Strauss examined its technological capabilities and concluded that its systems were inadequate for its multi-national corporation operation within 110 countries. A budget of US$5 million was created for a system upgrade. Many challenges along the way resulted in the inability to sufficiently report financials resulted in three distribution canters in the USA closing for a week. As a result of this, the company lost US$200 million and the termination of the chief information officer in 2008. 2. Hong Kong Airport: IT problems resulting in glitches in flight information system and database for tracking cargo shipment resulted in a US$600 million loss between 1998 and 1999. 3. Hershey: About 10 years ago Hershey wanted to implement a new order taking system. Problems with implementation resulted in the inability of the company shipping US$100 million worth of candy in time for Halloween thus impacting the company's bottom-line of an 18.6% loss in earnings during the quarter. 4. Kmart: in 2000 Kmart embarked on aUS$1.4 billon IT modernization project. In the midst of the project Kmart discovered that the project had too many customized application which would result in an exorbitant maintenance costs. An additional US$600m was spent on integrating a supply chain management system. Failure of this project led to bankruptcy filing by Kmart in 2002. •
This article touches on Property Solutions' new ResidentUtility initiative to bundle billing and utilities for the multifamily industry. Property Solutions is the nation's largest provider of apartment community websites and management software tools. The new system will enable property managers to manage billing and utilities through electronic payments. It solves the industry's utility billing problems, like costs associated with inefficient standards. ResidentUtility combines billing and utility management with en electronic payment systems that will increase extra incomes for properties, especially given that option that utilities and rent and be billed on the same invoices, properties will have extra cash inflows earlier in the month. As a result of extra income, properties can also reduce working capital and pay their own bills in a timely fashion. In addition, residents can reap the benefits because their bills will have more transparency and be bundled so that they only need to worry about paying one large sum. I think this is a great idea for properties, I used to be a leasing manager for residential condos and we offered this billing system to residents and it was very successful. Although I do see residents getting scared by one large invoice as some prefer to pay everything separate. From the management perspective, it is very beneficial because accounts payable and receivables become easier to handle when it is all done under one invoice and electronically.

International Cruise Ship Security Issues | Travel Tips - USAToday.com - 0 views

  • The International Ship and Port Safety Code, implemented in 2004, requires all cruise ships to engage in strict screening measures. This means that all passengers must pass through metal detectors before they enter the ship, and that their clothes and baggage are X-rayed as well .
  • Cruise ships also rate ports for incidents such as smuggled goods, contraband and stowaways; such statistics allow them to find the most tourist-friendly ports to visit.
  •
After 9/11 incident hotels, airlines, cruises are planning and implementing more security measurements to ensure customers' safety. Particularly, in this article security is the biggest concern while traveling. Any terrorist or criminal can book a cruise as a regular passenger and put passengers in danger. That is why in 2004 The International Ship and Port Safety Code requires that all passengers must pass by metal detectors and their baggage has to be X-rayed as well. Cruise ships also work very closely with the FBI, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Department of Homeland security to stay aware of possible pirate activity or terrorist attack. Ports of call are heavily reviewed and compared to ensure traveler's safety since they are in another country and other laws may apply. They check with local security and police forces, and monitor incidents that other cruise ships experience at a given port.

Encryption: The New Buzzword in Data Security | hospitalityupgrade.com - 0 views

  • n practical terms, that means that even if a hacker succeeded in penetrating a merchant’s payment system environment, either for face-to-face or online transactions, cardholder data would be rendered unreadable to the thief.
  • Data field encryption can represent an effective security layer by eliminating any clear text cardholder data either in storage or in transit,
  •
This article describes the importance of credit card security in the hospitality industry. End-to-end encryption (data field encryption) protects credit card consumers' information from hackers. In 2008, 50 percent of card hacks were targeted at hotels and restaurants, therefore, the industry is cracking down on the security of consumer data. Basically, the data encryption acts as a layer of extra security by erasing any consumer data that is left in transist after the transaction is made. The implementation of it is very important, there are still industry standards being put into place so that it can work efficiently. Visa is one of the forerunners that developed and published information on the best practices for the encryption.
  •
Data field encryption can be the solution to protect the credit card information of the guests. Nowadays there are still problems with cardholder data in many establishments such as bars, restaurants, shopping stores, and hotels.
  •
I think its one of the best security tools that the industry could adopt. It is such a common way for hackers to gain information and money, that it is often over looked. I for one have never given it much thought when I give my credit cards at hotels, but it will definitively be in the back of my mind from now on.

Hotel Network Security: A Study of Computer Networks in U.S. Hotels - Cornell School of... - 3 views

  • Given that the technology exists to increase a hotel network’s security, a hotel could potentially be considered at fault for not taking the necessary precautions to protect their guests from hackers.
    • TIANJIAN ZHANG

The security of guests' connections to the hotels' network seems to be an essential issue in hospitality industry, especially in those commercial hotels. Based on the leaks of the network technology in the hotels, some companies may hire hackers to steal or snoop the secret data of other companies for achieving some business goals during the business people from the victimized companies staying in the hotels. Therefore, if hotels can not make sure their network system can prevent malicious users from intercepting guests' transmissions, they must admit their weaknesses of network technology and warm guests to be cautious when they access the network system of the hotels if they need to view some secret data. Anyway, hotels should keep taking the necessary precautions to protect their guests from malicious users.
  •
From what I research from the article, VLAN as a local area network itself actually is quite secure cause the fake IP address means a private one.  And it is already encrypted. But the hackers had imitate the hotel's main server. As for the technology developing, it seems like the more secure the system make, the smarter the hacker would be.
  •
This article introduced how hotels improve their network to enhance security. To reduce the potential for stealing by theft and hacker, the W Dallas Hotel set up virtual local area networks. Compared with relatively rundimentary hub technology and encryption for Wi-Fi, the biggest advantage of this VLANs is to inhibit attackers from using computer to imitate the hotel'smain server. I think increaing a hotel network's security is very necessary, still, people should pay more attention to this and improve the techonology to make sure the security of all aspects.

China's E-Commerce Market: The Logistics Challenges | Publications - 0 views

  • Build your own networks. Many large e-commerce players are choosing to build their own internal logistics networks, incorporating their own teams into the business model to ensure quality. Some of these companies established the in-house capabilities at their inception, but some only did so after suffering serious logistics bottlenecks from relying on third-party logistics centers and delivery teams. The improved quality and resource control have proved worthwhile, both in increased speed of delivery and improved customer experience. Figure 4: Last mile (intra-city) delivery economics
  • Outsource to third-party providers. Given the lack of scale and capabilities, most e-commerce companies still outsource their delivery services to third-party express companies. Most express delivery providers in China can be grouped into two types
  • Form partnerships or acquire existing firms. A third approach is to invest in existing logistics companies or form partnerships with them. Alibaba, the e-commerce giant that owns Taobao, invested $4.5 million in Star Express. Alibaba's founder, Ma Yun, also invested in Best Logistics, which subsequently acquired a 70 percent stake in HTO; Star Express and HTO are the major Chinese express delivery companies.

Another rumour quashed then - Amadeus backs growing anti-Google lobby | Tnooz - 0 views

  • The floodgates have opened – last week’s frenzy of activity, when Expedia and then TripAdvisor submitted complaints to the European Commission about Google, has clearly triggered something. To paraphrase, as both pretty much argue the same thing, the complaints centre on accusations of unfair practices in search which, the pair argue, is damaging the industry and consumers. No major surprises there, given that Expedia and TripAdvisor were original members of the FairSearch anti-Google lobbying group in the US. What raised just a few eyebrows was when, a few hours after TripAdvisor’s statement was released, ETTSA (European Technology and Travel Services Association) came out in support of the pair. ETTSA primarily represents the interests of the GDSs, as well as online travel agencies such as Expedia, Ebookers and Travelocity, in Brussels, but the decision to publicly back individual companies effectively puts the GDSs, under the umbrella of their representative body, also up against Google. Fast forward a few days and now Amadeus has decided to publicly back Expedia’s complaint to the EC.
  • Amadeus, alongside ETTSA, is particularly concerned about the likely impact of Google Flight Search, when it eventually expands outside of the current customer base of the US.
  • But for Amadeus, which just a few weeks ago saw its UK MD Diana Bouzebiba suggest again that Google needs partners in Europe, to now also come out in support of the anti-Googlers will speak volumes to those that have watched closely ever since June 2010, when Google first announced its acquisition of ITA Software. Clearly Amadeus is not expecting to be forming a major partnership with Google any time soon. Unless it is some kind of weird reverse psychology, of course.
  •
The contention between these OTA's and Google is a bit confusing and requires further research, but I think what is essentially at hand is severe competition. Google Flight has implications to cross over into OTA territory, which puts GDS's in a difficult position: support the OTA's or enter another profitable partnership with Google. Amadeus seems to be backtracking on its stance regarding new Google Flight Search, originally implying forming a partnership with Google, and now stating it is taking the sides of "anti-Googlers Expedia and TripAdvisor.

Software Design and Programmers by Daniel Read - developer.*, Developer Dot Star - 0 views

The discussion of this article about the relationship between design and construction is intended to underscore three points: first, designers who create specifications that will be handed off to other people must be aware of the inherent incompleteness of any design. Consideration must be given to the audience for the design, as well as situational concerns such as schedule and risk. Second, it is critical that programmers have an intimate knowledge of the principles and techniques of software design; study is required. Programmers design when they code. The only difference for a programmer from one situation to the next is a matter of degree: at one time you might be working on a project that keeps as much design decision making upstream as possible, and at another time, you might find yourself on a team where most or all of the design decisions occur during construction. In either case, your knowledge of design has a direct effect on the quality of your work and the quality of the resulting product. Mastering your language, tools, and platform is not enough. Third, it is critical for managers and leaders in charge of development projects to recognize the inevitable role of design in the construction phase and to ensure that the overall process creates opportunities to leverage that fact as an advantage.

Philips gives augmented reality view of hotel rooms | Tnooz - 1 views

  • Philips gives augmented reality view of hotel rooms
  • Using the augmented reality-driven app, hoteliers can virtually display a 3D picture overlay of  TVs in their hotel rooms. The picture overlay is displayed on the smartphone’s or tablet’s screen showing how a new the TV fits in their rooms, including information about the TV’s technical details and other background material. The idea is that during renovation of rooms, hoteliers can get a better idea of some of the brand’s products will fit within the confines of guest rooms, potentially a useful feature (albeit used perhaps just the once by each property) given the size of many hotel TVs these days.
  •
By using this augmented reality-driven app, hoteliers can clearly see the effect of some decoration products during renovation of rooms. Thus hoteliers can do a better financial control and avoid unnecessary losses since they have got a better idea of what the brand's products will look like before they really put them in the room. This products also remind me of the improper or ugly decorations in some hotels. I guess if they apply this innovation, they can avoid this effect to a large degree so they can express a better outlook to their customers.

We can utilize information stored in property management systems to upsale rooms and services in the hotel

If guests are checking their reservations in their smart phones, hotels can use that technology to upgrade and increase profits.
  • iPods and iPads has really changed the opportunity to effectively communicate with a guest at any given moment.”
  • FrontDesk Upsell, which is part of the Nor1 platform, prompts front desk personnel with a sales script and a personalized offer through the hotel’s property management system (PMS) when a guest checks in. This scripted approach takes some of the guesswork out of the upselling equation and gives the staff more confidence when offering an upgrade.“For front desk personnel, this isn’t like a hard sell—it’s not like a used car salesman,” Buckhiester says. “This is about providing options. Those options may or may not be of interest to a guest, but in many cases they are.
  • There is that customer experience element, if you’re using the analytics in the right way, to make sure the offer is not only profitable to you but relevant to the customer.”

Exceeding guest expectations is the key of sucess. If the information stored in the pms about the guest provides clues, then the front desk can upsale, and the guest will leave the hotel happier, will return and will recommend it to his or her friends.

The Hotel Modern New Orleans Selects Agilysys Solution Suite - 0 views

  •
The August Group NYC's selection of Agilysys Guest 360™ property management system and Agilysys InfoGenesis™ point of sales system for their Hotel Modern New Orleans was a service driven decision made with confidence. Although the systems premiered at another property the August Group NYC is excited to reveal these advancements at their newest property in the Warehouse-Arts district of New Orleans. The August Group NYC remained loyal to Agilysys because they trust the management information system representatives who performed their job functions of installation and support flawlessly in the previous property. The powerful, yet easy to use applications are designed to increase productivity and hence the ability to generate more business. Specifically, the unique service orientated architecture of Agilysys' PMS system includes a Guest Hub that records and stores a history of guest activity. The article does not specify whether the data is collected while staying at the hotel or dining in the restaurant but I can assume both sources would be valuable. By using data mining the Hotel Modern New Orleans can review the guest's history and make specific recommendations the next time they visit their property. I do however foresee possible user acceptance issues with these advanced technology systems and the environment it is housed. The Hotel Modern New Orleans prides itself on its historical location and precious antiques. How will guests who wish to experience 'Old World charm' receive this 'New World' technology? Will guests see the recommendations as thoughtful and helpful or scary and an invasion of privacy? Can technology be put in the same category as diversity?
  •
I had trouble posting this for some reason; I was not given the option to share with a group when creating my original bookmark-so here is my original highlight from the article. "The combined power of our Agilysys property management and point-of-sale systems will give The Hotel Modern New Orleans the tools it needs to operate at peak efficiency, deliver highly personalized guest service and realize a competitive advantage."

Combines powerful reporting and configuration capabilities in the back office, the Agilysy InfoGenesis POS system can manage any combination of dining, bar service and retail operations. Both of these POS and PMS will help the hotel to operate effectively meanwhile provide highly personalized service to the customers.

With the advances of technology organizations can create a competitive advange by implementing them to their services and products. In the past companies were looking for remote desktop software solutions such as "VDI and Citrix to hardware solutions like Clear Cube and HP. Now with OnLive Virtual Desktop which is a full window and office desktop shows how technology has advanced very rapidly in the last couple of years making easier the use of systems "The service has been in use for the last year and while I've seen issues in hotels and areas with older or bottlenecked networks, in homes with high-bandwidth connections or businesses with well managed networks it has worked well - granted with few people on OnLive." Some companies would like to apply the advantage of Kinect which is a motion interface for Xbox designed to play without a controller. With Windows Kinect will make more comfortable to managers and directors giving presentations without the need of a keyboard or mice. Windows 8 will allow users to control a computer cursor with their eyes. "These technologies could, using different vectors, address usage models for PCs that have been unsafe or impossible before now and better allow existing hardware to use Microsoft's next operating system." With the implementation of water Block ( HzO) applied during manufacturing hardware would be more protected " Given that moisture is often what causes electronics to corrode and decay over time these solutions could be the equivalent of a Fountain of Youth, significantly extending the useful life of hardware that operates in moist or humid environments." This new advances in technology can bring to organizations more opportunities to expand their market, obtain a competitive advantage and protect their assets.
