Cyberattacks are surging and more data records are stolen - 1 views

  • Almost 2 billion data records around the world were lost or stolen by cyberattacks in the first half of 2017
  • There were 918 data breaches which compromised 1.9 billion data records in the first six months of 2017,
  • The number of lost, stolen or compromised records increased by 164 percent compared to the same period in 2016.

  • New regulations such as the U.K. data protection bill, the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation and Australia's Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Act are set to come into force in the coming months and years, and will push firms to disclose hacks and security breaches.
  • Security is no longer a reactive measure but an expectation from companies and consumers
  • Cyberattacks are now the number one external risk factor facing businesses, according to 23.1 percent of 39 CFOs surveyed by CNBC.
  •
As we begin to discuss cyber security this week, I found this article on increasing number of cyberattacks very eye opening. It was no surprise that due to an increase in technology usage, new risks would present themselves to organizations. However, the number of compromised records has sky rocketed to say the least, increasing by over 164 percent from 2016 to 2017. The article goes on to say, "cyber security is no longer a reactive measure, but a requirement for companies, and consumers." CFOs now even consider cyber attacks to be the number one external risk factor for businesses. Overall, its certain organizations today should budget for effective cyber security, in order to prevent any potentially harmful cyber attacks in the future.

Cloud Computing Is Crucial To The Future Of Our Societies -- Here's Why - 0 views

  • Cloud will provide the digital infrastructure of tomorrow’s cities, where an estimated 6 billion of the world’s population will live by 2045. Smart elevators and parking lots, driverless cars and drone taxis, trains and subways, farms and power plants -- all will be safer and better managed, thanks to the cloud’s ability to store and analyze data.
  • The cloud will also be transformative for companies, especially small and mid-sized businesses, as data analytics, artificial intelligence and other capabilities become available as services.
  • A utilities cloud will automatically repair faults in the power grid to ensure that homes and businesses get the electricity they need.

  • A commercial aviation cloud will help airlines manage ground operations such as maintenance, fueling, baggage handling, and cabin cleaning, thereby increasing efficiency and helping flights take off on time.
  • A banking cloud will let financial institutions scan thousands of transactions per second to prevent fraud.
  • The cloud will also help society cope with growing volumes of data. This includes applications like high-definition video, which Huawei estimates will account for 89% of individual user traffic by 2025.
  • The cloud will support emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and help them to adapt to new platforms such as mobile. When smartphone sales overtook sales of PCs in 2011, mobile became the world’s largest computing platform. Naturally, AI has made its way into phones.
  • Because inference needs to process data in real time, all the time, even tomorrow’s super-advanced smartphones won’t be able to meet the computing demands imposed by AI. They’ll have to rely on the processing power of the cloud.
  • In particular, video will feature prominently in tomorrow’s vehicles, providing in-car entertainment, enhancing road safety by allowing drivers to “see through” other vehicles, and making cars more secure. To thwart burglars, vandals and car thieves, many cars now have multiple security cameras. Video footage can be stored on a secure digital card inside the car or beamed up to the cloud.

Although driverless cars are still a ways off, it will be realized soon, thanks to the power of the cloud.

Social Network Ad Spending to Hit $23.68 Billion Worldwide in 2015 - eMarketer - 0 views

  •
"In Western Europe, we see a similar trend, and social network ad spending per user will remain about half the amount spent in North America throughout our forecast. By contrast, Asia-Pacific social networkers will command only $8.04 each from advertisers trying to reach them this year, and that figure will increase to just $10.54 by 2017. In that region, user bases are still growing significantly while spending still lags. Social Network Ad Spending per Social Network User Worldwide, by Region, 2013-2017 The US and China will be the leading individual countries in social network ad spending for the foreseeable future, collectively commanding more than half the worldwide market throughout our forecast period. This year, advertisers in the US will spend $9.59 billion on social ads, up 31.0% from 2014 and more than double the amount they spent in 2013. By the end of our forecast period, social network advertising in the US will total $14.40 billion-just shy of 20% of all digital ad spending countrywide. In China, ad spending on social networks will reach $3.41 billion this year and is expected to increase to $6.11 billion in 2017, or 12.5% of all digital ad dollars in the country. At a company level, unsurprisingly, Facebook is dominating the paid social advertising landscape globally. eMarketer estimates that in 2015, the company will make $15.50 billion in ad revenues, or 65.5% of all social network ad spending worldwide. That portion is up from 2014, when Facebook owned 64.5% of the social ad market. Twitter is also gaining share, expected to take 8.8% of global social network ad spending, or $2.09 billion, up from 7.1% share in 2014. LinkedIn, the other major US-based social ad seller for which eMarketer forecasts ad revenues, will make $900 million in advertising this year, but its share of global social ad spend will dip to 3.8%, down from 4.2% last year." Why GDS Will Remain a Crucial Booking Channel for Hoteliers in 2017 and Beyond. - Monda... - 1 views

  • Even though online bookings continue to grow and will do so for the foreseeable future, hoteliers need to maintain a focus on the GDS channel, which will remain a critical source of revenue and bookings both in 2017 and for the next several years.
  • offline sales will continue to dominate the marketplace in 2017
  • an effective hotel distribution strategy must consider all distribution channels, including GDS, to find the strategy that's best for a particular hotel and market.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • But despite years of predictions that agent-booked travel would decrease, GDS bookings remain strong: In our sample of data from Sabre hotels, the number of room nights booked via GDS grew by 1.08 million from 2015 to 2016, an increase of 10.4 percent. These numbers underscore industry analysts’ expectations for growth in this channel.
  • Successful inventory and distribution management strategies also require the right technology platform
  •
This article explains the booking trend of hotel in 2017 and afterward. Even though online booking tools such as website, mobile apps have made tourists easier to book the hotel in the world, in hotel's perspective, GDS is still the main contributor to increasing bookings and enhancing the hotel revenue. According to the article, GDS booking increased by 11.6 percent between the year 2015 and 2016, and around 60 percent of bookings at hotel were made through offline sources including CRS, walk-in, call or GDS. Among these, the major tool was GDS. Furthermore, the change of economic and political environment has caused hotels to have the right tools to decrease the loss. Thus, hotels should be equipped with the technology platform to monitor and support inventory and distribution channels. Every hotel has different situation and different booking channel. For example, when I was working at reservation department, our main booking source was an online. In other words, each hotel should find out what their main booking channel is, and based on that, suitable strategy to improve revenue should be developed even though this article emphasizes the importance of GDS booking.

Hospitality: Shelter Your Business from Advanced Cyber Threats | Hospitality Technology - 0 views

  • According to Verizon’s 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report, accommodation was the top industry for point-of-sale intrusions.
  • Hospitality, whether hotels or restaurants, transact more credit cards than almost any other industry, making them an extremely attractive target.
  • The hospitality industry’s rapid push to digitalization means that it is still playing catch-up on the security front.
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • The 2017 Lodging Technology Study by Hospitality Technology found that 74% of hotels do not have breach protection and less than half use end-to-end encryption for cardholder data or use tokenization at the card swipe.
  • PoS systems are a weak security point for many networks as they are in constant use and often are not patched or updated.
  • Denial-of-Service attacks make up approximately 20% of hospitality cyber incidents.
  • Early detection is key to controlling attack costs and reputation damage.
  • Host- and network-based firewalls should be used as the first part of a layered security approach.
  • A good endpoint prevention stack consists of an antivirus solution to handle known threats and a prevention layer that effectively prevents unknown, advanced attacks.
  • No technology, however, can substitute for an overall culture of security.
  •
The article describes the main cyber threats that the hospitality companies face. Over past few years, nearly every major hotel group has been attacked. The same is true for the F&B industry. One of the reasons for that is that the hospitality companies are the ones that process credit card information more than in any other industries. Moreover, hotels and restaurants have many access points for the malware: from wifi networks to POS's. The attackers may also use the third party suppliers (for example, OTA's) to access the hotels' systems. Verizon 2017 Security Payment Report states that less than a half of all hospitality businesses have full credit card payment security compliance. The main type of the attack is POS intrusion. Denial-of-Service Attacks constitute about 20% of the total number. Although they are not so dangerous in terms of sensitive information, they can disturb the company's operations causing significant losses as well. Thus, the hotels and restaurants need to invest in early detection protection provided by the effective firewalls and antiviruses. However, it is also very important to understand that no technology may ever fully substitute the security culture of the company's employees. Many attacks are conducted due to the personal weaknesses of the associates answering the calls, for example. So, in my opinion, in addition to the cyber security systems, there should be appropriate personnel training as well as well elaborated procedure protocols.

Article: HRIS trends for 2017 - People Matters - 0 views

  •  HRIS technology trends are changing and challenging vendors to come up with next-generation solutions for employers. Valued at over $15 billion globally, the human resources technology market is one of the fastest growing segments in business IT — and it shows no signs of slowing down. With an HRIS, companies can align HR strategy with business objectives to get the most out of their workforces and adapt quickly to market changes.
  • There are a number of solutions offered by HRIS. Some of these include solutions in training, payroll, HR, compliance, succession planning, attendance tracking, risk management, recruiting, etc. The majority of quality HRIS systems include flexible designs that feature databases that are integrated with a wide range of features available. Ideally, they will also include the ability to create reports and analyze information quickly and accurately, in order to make the workforce easier to manage. It allows employees to exchange information with greater ease and without the need for paper through the provision of a single location for announcements, external web links, and company policies. This location is designed to be centralized and accessed easily from anywhere within the company, which also serves to reduce redundancy within the organization.

It will be necessary to customize any HRIS to the unique needs of a company so the system will remain flexible and relevant throughout the life of the company or enterprise.
  •
The article introduces the trend of HRIS system in 2017. As information technology have considerably improved, its functions have heavily impacted on human resources management. Especially, it is said that the human resources technology market is one of the fastest growing segments in business IT and with an HRIS, companies can align HR strategy with business objectives to maintain the workforces and adapt the changes quickly. HRIS is integrated with training, payroll, HR, success planning, recruiting etc. and centralized, which encourages staff to access easily from anywhere within the company and reduce work redundancy. This article emphasizes that as one of the 2017 trends, mobile HR Apps will be spread out, so employees can expect to see the update via their smartphone. As the functions are centralized in one place, the data will be managed easily and it can increase focus on employees. Also, the cloud system can be applied in the HRIS, which means increased flexibility, faster updates, and decreased costs. As the HRIS features are getting various, a company should investigate an HRIS that fits their goals, objectives, mission, and values and choose the best options.

Customer Acceptance of Use of Artificial Intelligence in Hospitality Services: An India... - 0 views

  • Scholars and practitioners alike, backed by strong empirical evidence, attribute this rising trend in the use of AI-related technologies to the fact that AI-driven applications and robots demonstrate superior information processing and enhanced, cognitive and task capabilities when compared to the ones that are demonstrated by traditionally used mechanisms
  • customers are likely to accord much importance to the process of appraising AI devices and related technologies by comparing them with the services that human employees are likely to deliver

  • AI-driven technologies are considered to be intelligent devices; therefore, customers exposed to AI are not expected to learn many new aspects of these devises upfront so as to operate them effectively.
  • Notwithstanding the benefits of AI, it is also probable that an ill-planned transition into AI will lead to unprecedented levels of disruption in the sector if such transition happens without a clear understanding of what facilitates customers’ willingness to accept AI.

This study looks at Indian hospitality consumers' willingness to accept AI and its associated technology. Being that hospitality consumers are most interested in "fun and indelible stay experiences," AI for hospitality must provide service as great as or better than human professionals. • Top POS Predictions for 2017 “Windows will no longer be the number one operating system in the market, as multiple operating systems are being offered to allow greater flexibility to consumers. Data collection will be a bigger selling point for consumers, not only to track sales and inventory, but also to manage shifts and training, as well as deploy customer loyalty programs.” — Bematech “We will see increasing configuration flexibility to adapt to more fluid layouts in a hyper-channel oriented world, smaller counter footprints, more intensive future-proofing and increased value.” — Fujitsu America, Inc. “Major restaurant chains will continue to adopt online ordering and line-busting technology and POS hardware will do a better job of connecting wirelessly to each other (Internet of Things) and to mobile (smartphone and tablet) devices. It will also integrate with sensors, cameras and video monitors to provide smart advertising to customers based on environment and purchasing trends.” — Epson “A lot of the new requests for hardware are around supporting initiatives for increasing customer engagement. These come in the form of minimizing the barrier for traditional POS, installing kiosks of varying sizes and form factors, mobility solutions, and customer-facing screens on the POS for supporting both touch and non-touch versions.” — Par Technology Corp. “In the end, hardware is simply the platform for software and consumer omnichannel demands. The rise in mobile payments and the EMV mandate will prod hospitality to upgrade legacy POS systems because of the need for security compliance and to accept more payment options. In addition, businesses will have an increased need for visibility in automating food safety processes.” — Zebra

It is interesting to see the predictions of the POS systems for 2017. Windows is a major contender in both hardware and software and I wonder if this prediction is true. Online ordering will most definitely be on the raise. Consumers will be using similar technology as UberEats, and at restaurants, people would be able to order and pay at their desk - there are already chains out there doing this.
  •
Online ordering is a very popular thing here what I live. We have a local business here that comes to my hotel several times a day for guests that don't want to go out and eat. All they have to do is place their order from the full menu through the app and the food is brought to them for a $5 upcharge. The casinos have seen so much traffic from it that they have put a stand for the delivery service to drop off and pick up food near the taxi stops.
  •
It is becoming very popular to order take out form restaurants through a variety of apps or websites. Some of these include, deliverydudes, postmates, deliverywow, ubereats, and eat24. I know that postmates not only delivers food but they will also pick up groceries, supplies, or alochol and deliver it to you. I also believe that amazon prime will soon be adding this to their services and will be delivering food in the near future. It is very convenient for those customers that don't mind paying tip and a delivery fee for the food to be delivered.

New Year, New Challenges: 4 Changes Impacting Restaurants in 2017 - 0 views

  • In 2017, menus will continue to evolve - as they must! Taking advantage of industry trends while they’re hot is a great way to show your guests that your brand is current. Restaurants that can satisfy that need will excel in the new year. Another popular trend in 2017 will be meal kits. People will not only want an exceptional dining experience, they will want to be a part of it. Restaurants can take advantage of this by offering cooking classes and whole meal replacement packages of their own.
  • Too many restaurant owners and chefs still think they know it all when it comes to guest wants. Their menus are a reflection of this. We often throw around the term “chef driven,” but for too many, the words “chef driven” should really be replaced with “ego driven.” Perhaps in 2017, restaurants should be more “guest driven.” When you are reworking your menu to be more efficient and to satisfy the cravings of the current market, make sure that you use the data from your restaurant POS system. This is a gold mine of information if you tap into it, decipher the data, and apply it to future menu design. Your product mix report will tell you exactly where your guests are spending their money. If you’re smart, you’ll drop the high food cost egocentric items and create more profitable guest desirable ones.

POS can assist restaurant owners and managers adapt to current trends and find their best selling dishes as well as the least popular and change their menus.

This article predicted POS trends for 2017 and narrowed it down to convenience, mobile retail, smarter technology use, accessibility, and media. I found this article interesting to read because most of this I have seen throughout the hospitality industry. As cloud storage systems are becoming more common, tablets are being used in placed of large desktop computers because they are cheaper and not much storage is needed. The article also stated that Global Market Insights, a research firm, predicts that POS terminal market will increase 19% from 2016 to 2023. This shows that the industry is changing as a whole and for those who haven't converted yet to this type of technology, they may want to consider doing so. It also explained how technology can be used to gather more data about the consumer/customers and also to use the technology to attract customers to dine in at the restaurant or shop because they want a more interactive experience.

GDS Hotel Bookings Rise in 2017 | TravelPulse - 0 views

  • GDS Hotel Bookings Rise in 2017 | TravelPulse
    • rnobl005

This article is rather short but I thought it complemented the discussion post for this week. Travel Click surveyed 900 travel agents worldwide and discovered that hotel bookings will surpass 68 million reservations by the end of 2017 thanks to Global Distribution Systems. In 2016 the estimated number of bookings was 66 million, meaning GDS is gaining in popularity as a means of securing travel arrangements even today. Like the Whitepaper suggests, Sabre, Amadeus, and Travelport are the 3 major companies supporting this service. I thought it was interesting that the article brought up the issue of "rate parity" as a means to distinguish one hotel from another. Travel agents are less likely to book a hotel if the hotel is offering different rates across platforms, especially if the GDS rate is higher. Again, bringing this article back to the discussion questions, this is evidence that there are benefits to using a travel agent when planning a trip. They have a comprehensive knowledge of the market at their disposable compared to the average person searching for the best deal on their own. Towards the end of the article the author brings up that travel agents are not using Airbnb because the platform isn't integrated into the GDS - which was not surprising.
  • travel agents are using the GDS to make a record number of hotel reservations.
  • 68 million reservations
    • rnobl005

I think this figure them mention is slightly misleading though. In context this sounds like the total number of reservations made using GDS systems, not necessarily the number of reservations made by travel agents.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • increase of more than 2 million reservations from the number of bookings generated in 2016.
    • rnobl005

Regardless of who is responsible for the amount of bookings, I think an increase of 2 million bookings in one year is evidence that GDS is still an extremely profitable revenue stream for the hospitality industry.
  • One of the most important things that travel agents want when it comes to hotel bookings on the GDS is rate parity. Hotels that don’t offer the same prices on the GDS that they do elsewhere are not looked upon favorably.
  • Hotels that offer great amenities are also among the ones that travel agents book the most.
    • rnobl005

The most appealing amenities mentioned in the article are swimming pools, free parking, airport shuttles or transfers, hotel gyms and early check-in/late check-out. Hoteliers should take this information into account and find ways to highlight these features at their properties.
  • global travel agents rely on the GDS as an essential operating system for conducting hotel research and booking reservations
  • Travel agents continue to rely heavily on the GDS for booking and shy away from non-traditional accommodation options such as Airbnb because they are not available on the GDS.
  •
The article talks about the use of GDS and its importance in the current Hospitality World. It shows a study which refers GDS as the most important booking tool for travel agents, citing record numbers in booking in 2017
  •

This article is based on SIM's top 5 largest IT investments of 2017, which I found interesting to share, as we learn about I.T. investments. They ranked business analytics as the number one of IT investments, as companies are always looking to hire the best talent. Next on the list is custom software development, as new technologies now allow access to different applications to work together. Furthermore on the list, are cybersecurity, cloud computing, and CRM, which is no surprise as they are growing tools in today's technology driven industry. • offline sales will continue to dominate the marketplace in 2017.
  • Despite some high-profile mergers in recent years, a host of new brands and the growth of the sharing economy mean that the hospitality market will remain fragmented for a long time to come.

  • The majority of bookings via travel agents and travel management companies are GDS bookings
  •
This article explains how bookings through the GDS system have been increasing throughout the years. Based on the increases from 2015 to 2016, it was projected that it will continue to increase going into 2017 and the years ahead. This article should be used as a form of advice for hoteliers. It is explaining that although online systems are growing, there still needs to be focus on GDS. This means that each company needs to focus on each system and determine which system is being used most specific to their brand.
  •
This article was mainly on why GDS is crucial and will continue to be for many years. "GDS bookings increased by 11.6 percent year over year from 2015 to 2016 in a sample of over 6,000 hotels worldwide." As mentioned in the article, GDS bookings have increased throughout the years. However, the author also mentioned that its inevitable that there might be a shift over time but it's important for hotel distributors to consider all the channels in order to find what works best for the particular hotel and market. "Successful inventory and distribution management strategies also require the right technology platform - one that's not only scalable and agile, but easy to use."

Council Post: New Pay Trends: How Today's Workforce Is Reshaping Payroll - 0 views

  • It’s been over 40 years since direct deposit was introduced, arguably the last major development in the payroll world. It’s amazing to think that, with the speed of technological innovation these days, you have to go so far back to find the most recent payroll innovation that had such a significant impact on both employees and employers.
  • technology has infiltrated the payroll landscape in recent years, innovating time reporting and flexibility in pay. Payroll is also being forced to adapt to a workforce comprised heavily of two types of employees: those who require immediate income, and millennials and Generation Z workers.
  • Paycards According to a 2017 FDIC national survey, 25.2% of U.S. households are “unbanked” or “underbanked.” Those who are “unbanked” do not have any traditional banking relationship (i.e., a checking or savings account), while those who are “underbanked” have a financial institution account but also obtain services from providers outside the banking system.

  • 78% of Americans who are living paycheck to paycheck and who are financially unprepared for an unexpected expense. They are often hourly employees in service-based industries, such as health care, hospitality, quick service restaurants, retail or nursing.
  • To combat this, many companies are implementing artificial intelligence (AI) for predictive timekeeping, rapid detection of irregularities, and even “smart” time verification based on video feeds and facial recognition.
  • Research by Aite Group shows the use of paycards is expected to increase through 2022. For employers, these cards, backed by Visa or MasterCard, can provide benefits such as reduced payroll processing costs and the ability to move to fully electronic payment mechanisms.
  • Artificial Intelligence For Time Management
  • Workers increasingly expect employers to be okay with them working on a personal device, rather than a work-issued system. This adds a level of complexity for companies trying to verify payroll hours. Fraud and forgetfulness can lead to inaccurate records and added overhead.
  • Direct deposit of earnings for unbanked and underbanked populations isn’t a viable option, which has made the rise in the use of paycards (debit cards to which an employee’s wages are transferred) an increasingly popular alternative.
  • Payroll Platforms
  • Fragmented systems and data have always plagued the fintech industry, but payroll platforms are helping address these problems. They are making seamless integration a reality and combining features in a single platform. Having a fully integrated system provides a single set of data and a flow that reduces complexity, facilitates changes and ensures consistency across all system components.
  • Daily Pay
  • A daily pay benefit lets workers track and access their earned wages prior to their next payday.
  • Provides the flexibility to transfer earned wages to paycards (or other payment platforms). • Incentivizes employees to perform accurate and efficient time reporting, as employees can see their available balance increase at the end of each shift. • Integrates with other payroll platforms, providing “plug-and-play” functionality.
  • Challenges Ahead
  • All of these new technologies will face skepticism about whether they can deliver on their promises. In some cases, these technologies will have to win over decision makers who are reluctant to change their ways.
  •
This is an interesting article that describes some of the new technology being implemented to improve how employees are getting paid based on the current workforce's spending habits. These include the ability to be paid by debit cards, ability to be paid daily and have the flexibility to move the money around, AI intelligence to keep track of the employees' work hours on their own devices, and integration of many payroll functions into one platform. With so much technological advancement, it seems that payroll management is one that is still behind with many companies still working with the old clock in and out method which is time consuming.

  • Half of the survey group said they would find it easier to collaborate with coworkers if their employers’ digital transformation efforts focused more on employee empowerment.
  • Separate research also notes that companies that are digital laggards don’t perform as well as those that embrace digital transformation
  • Technologists at Harvard Business School wrote, “organizations that scored in the top quartile of our digital transformation index obtained much better gross margins, earnings, and net income than organizations in the bottom digital quartile. Other financial and operating indicators showed similar disparities.”
  • people tend to assume only the youngest workers place a high value on having the technology they need at work. But research reveals that these digital natives are not alone.
  • 68% of the 18 to 34 age group said having the digital tools they need at work makes them more productive. That’s a significant share. But it’s even higher – at 80% – for the 35 to 54 age group. And a whopping 83% of workers age 55 and older agreed.
  • financial considerations shouldn’t be the sole focus of digital transformation.
  • Mapping out a digital transformation plan should include a critical assessment of which digital tools employees need to efficiently get the job done.
  • experience is the centerpiece of everything businesses do.
  •
ROI is not the only consideration for a business when updating technology and software; employee productivity is also a factor. Employees that feel that they have the tools to do their jobs are more likely to be productive during the work day. By increasing employee productivity and happiness, ROI already increases beyond the benefits of having better, quicker technology and software.
