What are the advantages of Sustainable Building? | Syntegra Energy Consulting Ltd - 0 views

  • The practice of sustainable building has existed in one form or another for decades now, but it seems that its only in recent years that a drive for the construction of environmentally responsible, energy efficient and sustainable homes and commercial buildings has truly come to the forefront of the design, planning and construction industries.
  • The smart use of materials contributes greatly to reducing embodied energy in sustainable building projects.
  • Sustainable buildings generally require less maintenance than buildings without sustainability as a priority in their design and construction.
  •
I found this article interesting for this week's topic, as it talks about the advantages to sustainable buildings. The article mentions the practice of sustainability has existed in some way for decades. However, now more than ever, there is a drive for responsible construction, for both homes and commercial buildings. Advantages to such buildings include lower costs, as sustainable designs offer energy efficiency. Which leads to the advantage of lower energy consumption, through the use of systems, such as solar panels, or wind energy generation features. Lastly, sustainable buildings can also require less maintenance, allowing for a longer lifespan, and less costly attention.

Marriott Bringing Beacons To 500 Hotels By The End Of 2016 | - 0 views

  • I was reading a lot about beacon technology, and I thought there were some cool things we could explore. We should put beacons in our hotel just to see who we target a message for most effectively.
  • Using Beacon technology, participating hotels could send guests push notifications on their mobile devices as they moved about the property
  • Offers were tailored to specific Marriott locations, ranging from food and beverage to spa to golf
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Consumers want upgrades and offers that are tailored specifically to their needs.
  •
This article spoke about how Marriott had given proximity marketing an initial try in 2014, and how it was so successful, they decided to bring it to an extra 500 of their hotels in 2016. They originally started with this technology to see who they targeted most effectively. Once they saw how successful it became in driving sales, they started to improve their offerings, by adding promotions tailored to locations, from local food to spa services. Overall, Marriott believes its no longer about how loyal a consumer is to a brand, but how loyal a brand is to their consumers.

For an Excellent Attendee Experience, Event pros Need to Embrace Event Technologies | M... - 1 views

  • Gone are the days when event planners conducted venue research offline, manually updated registration numbers in spreadsheets, and relied on post-event surveys to measure success.
  • Not only does it empower event planners to be more effective and efficient, it’s also redefining the attendee experience.
  • To achieve this goal, event marketers rely on communicating relevant content to prospects and registered attendees to pique or maintain their interest.
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • A mobile device, more specifically an event app, can act as an information hub for all things related to the event, including agenda updates, session breakouts, news, and promotions. It can also be used to encourage attendee engagement through proprietary content, peer networking requests, social sharing, and more.
  • registration and onsite check-in go hand in hand. If planners don’t use an effective registration tool with robust data management software, it stands to reason they probably won’t have a smooth check-in process either .
  • Using event management software that has email marketing integrated with prospect and attendee lists, as well as an event app, will give an event marketer an advantage.
  • Start small by selecting one or two metrics, such as technology and its relationship with attendee satisfaction, to track throughout the event’s lifecycle.
  • Evaluate and diagnose the areas where technology can drive improved attendee satisfaction and engagement.
  •
I found this article very interesting, as it touched upon certain pros for events to embrace event technologies, such as event registration software. As mentioned in the article, nowadays, nothing is done manually. Therefore, updating registration spreadsheets, or surveys manually just slows down any process. Additionally, if planners do not plan for a good registration tool, or process, they will definitely not have a smooth check-in process. With technology softwares, like event registration, allows for event planners to have a more efficient experience, as well as, for the attendees. Moreover, these softwares even allow for word of mouth, through social network sharing; giving a greater advantage for attendee show up. Overall, with technology softwares events can run much smoother, and also, allow for tracking of attendee satisfaction, in order to find any improvements for future events. Depending on the event, an event software can surely be a win-win for both the planners and the attendees.

  • Security is no longer a reactive measure but an expectation from companies and consumers
  • Cyberattacks are now the number one external risk factor facing businesses, according to 23.1 percent of 39 CFOs surveyed by CNBC.
  •
As we begin to discuss cyber security this week, I found this article on increasing number of cyberattacks very eye opening. It was no surprise that due to an increase in technology usage, new risks would present themselves to organizations. However, the number of compromised records has sky rocketed to say the least, increasing by over 164 percent from 2016 to 2017. The article goes on to say, "cyber security is no longer a reactive measure, but a requirement for companies, and consumers." CFOs now even consider cyber attacks to be the number one external risk factor for businesses. Overall, its certain organizations today should budget for effective cyber security, in order to prevent any potentially harmful cyber attacks in the future.

  •
This article is based on SIM's top 5 largest IT investments of 2017, which I found interesting to share, as we learn about I.T. investments. They ranked business analytics as the number one of IT investments, as companies are always looking to hire the best talent. Next on the list is custom software development, as new technologies now allow access to different applications to work together. Furthermore on the list, are cybersecurity, cloud computing, and CRM, which is no surprise as they are growing tools in today's technology driven industry. Overall, I agree with SIM's list, as these top 5 investments are clearly necessities to success in today's tech-driven industries.

The Disadvantages of Computerized Accounting Systems | Bizfluent - 0 views

  • But it’s easy to become excessively reliant on computerized accounting and to overlook the potential pitfalls of allowing a machine and a software program to store all your data and calculate essential numerical relationships.
  • Although computerized accounting systems use technology to calculate sums and store information, this data must be entered by humans, and these humans must be trained
  • Training staff on software programs can be expensive, and knowledge needs to be updated regularly because computerized accounting systems change, sometimes every year.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Virtually every aspect of a computerized accounting system is costly.
  • You may also have to shell out funds for repairs, or hire professionals for training, custom software or to untangle especially complex mishaps.
  • Computerized accounting systems are vulnerable to cyber security issues.
  •
As this week we are talking about electronic accounting systems, I found this article on the disadvantages of computerized accounting systems to be rather interesting. As mentioned in the article, many companies tend to become too reliant on computerized systems, which leads to them forgetting about the negative outcomes that may arise from using such systems. These disadvantages include high cost, from training staff to repairing/replacing the electronic systems. In addition, like any cloud-based system, a computerized accounting system can also make a company vulnerable to cyber security issues, such as hacking. Overall, while very advantageous, computerized accounting systems still have certain risks companies must address before deciding whether, or not to use them.

Interview. Alexandru Balan (eMenu): How can a digital menu help restaurants - Business ... - 0 views

  • After five minutes of waiting we got slightly annoyed and started wondering if there isn’t a technology out there that takes care of this problem
  • Because of Millennials, what they want and how they want it. Everything now spins around technology, so why not a restaurant menu?
  • Here the eMenu lets them have translations in virtually as many languages as they want to, without turning the menu into a tome
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • No more paper wasted on small menus that get lost under the furniture and have to be reprinted every week. With this option, the guest can have the full menu on the TV, with dazzling pictures, in any language he wants, having the option to check hotel amenities and services, all whilst having full internet access to verify any tourism related information he might please
  •
I found this article incredibly interesting, as it is an interview with the co-founder of eMenu, Alexandru. He speaks about how he thought up the idea of eMenu, when he was at a restaurant trying to pay the bill, but after five minutes of trying to call the server and being ignored, he got annoyed; and believed there was a way to fix this. Additionally, he makes great points about why the eMenu is so efficient, such as it being technology based, it is very popular amongst Millennials. He also makes the great point of it being on a tech system, it allows restaurants to have the menu in several language options more conveniently. As well as, it being flexible enough to make changes, such as newly added plates, without needing to reprint several new menus. He then goes on to say, he now looks forward to bringing this technology into the hotel industry, where room service menus can now be available from the TV, rather than in a "small wasted paper menu." All in all, I believe Alexandru makes some very valid points as to why the eMenu should be considered in many aspects of the hospitality industry.

Hotel Queen Anne, Hotel Van Belle deploy PMS mobility | Hotel Management - 0 views

  • We not only wanted to bring our PMS up to speed, but also ‘future-proof’ the system as well.
  • The StayNTouch platform was very attractive as it not only provided the most up-to-date rooms, transactions and housekeeping management features, but also included the mobile features that few other systems in the market are able to do well.
  • Rover PMS is a next generation PMS, fully cloud, fits on every device, optimizes hotel operations from front desk, to groups, to housekeeping to revenue management.
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • StayNTouch is a software as a service hotel property management systems company focused on developing solutions that help hotels raise service levels, drive revenues, reduce costs, and ultimately change the way hotels can captivate their guests.
  •
As we are discussing online PMS services this week, I thought it would be interesting to research the topic a bit more. This article caught my attention, as it is a family owned hotel, running for 112 years, that has recently updated it's systems. If this doesn't prove that hotel systems are going to be extremely high tech and in the "cloud" in the future, I don't know what else will. The article mentions two services, StayNTouch and Rover PMS. StayNTouch, is a platform that allows hotels to essentially "stay in touch" with their guests, by delivering personalized service to create better relationships, and therefore, drive revenues. Additionally, Rover PMS, is a fully cloud service that optimizes all hotel operations, and fits any device, including mobile, for a monthly fee. Overall, the future of hotel systems is among us, and if it goes well, soon all hotels will probably be switching over to the "cloud."

Waste Management And LG Provide Hotel Operators New Sustainability Option, Convenient D... - 0 views

  • The leading provider of flat-panel HDTVs to the lodging industry, LG Electronics USA, Inc., and the nation's leading recycler, Waste Management, Inc. (NYSE: WM), today announced the first recycling program for hotel operators to responsibly dispose of outdated television sets and computer monitors.
  • To support this growing trend, LG Electronics will now offer environmentally conscious hotel, motel and resort operators a convenient, cost-effective opportunity for recycling the obsolete hotel TVs.
  • "This program will encourage hotel operators to dispose of outdated electronics in an environmentally responsible manner," said Teddy Hwang, president, LG Electronics USA, which established its successful nationwide electronics-recycling program for consumers with Waste Management over a year ago
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The hotel TVs and computer monitors collected under this program will be processed in an environmentally responsible manner at one of four regionally designated Waste Management recycling facilities that are ISO 14001 and 9001 certified to protect the local environment in those communities along with the people handling this waste.
  • "As the lodging industry seeks to increase its environmentally conscious initiatives, the LG program gives hotel operators the opportunity to conveniently recycle electronic waste responsibly and economically," said Patrick DeRueda, president of WM Recycle America.
  • "By recycling used, unwanted, obsolete or damaged electronic equipment, useful materials such as glass, metals and plastics may be recovered for reuse in other products," he said.
  •
This article caught my attention because it was not just the Waste Management service offering a new sustainable option for hotels, but an actual electronics provider as well, LG. It appears that since 2009, LG has been partnering with Waste Management, and helping hotels dispose of their old electronics, such as older LG tv models, in a much safer and environment friendly way. This gives hotels no excuse to not dispose, or recycle, electronics in a safer manner. I believe a partnership like this is a perfect demonstration of a social responsible company, who is aware and active of the damages their products can make toward the world. I hope more electronic companies start partnering up like this; as it brings awareness, and convenience to not just hotels, but many industries that use, and frequently update, electronic devices.

  • We're dedicated to driving business for travel agencies by offering them the widest range of the best hotels under exclusive terms and conditions, and partnering with Sabre furthers that commitment
  •
I found this article interesting, as technology is constantly advancing, and this supports just that. Sabre has announced it is introducing a new lodging solution that will allow travel agents to access content from three different companies in one, thanks to a new agreement with Sabre. This solution will allow for an easier shopping experience, with a wider range of the best hotels and rates side by side. Overall, as Christian Gerron says in the article, "it is to provide their customers with the best choice and flexibility." At the end of the day, that is just what any hotel, travel agent, and any other sectors of our industry want, what is best for our customers.

Cyberattacks on Hotels -- What Should Hotel Owners and Operators Do? - Cybersecurity La... - 0 views

  • Almost as soon as there were data breaches, hotels became a prime target of hackers, and the hospitality industry has consistently been one of the most commonly targeted businesses
  • Most commonly, hackers compromise systems so that they can obtain credit card numbers and sell them on the dark web.
  • More sophisticated hackers collect information on individuals as a means of compromising other computer systems and to impersonate individuals
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • As further described below, the hospitality industry possesses a number of factors that make them attractive to hackers: large volumes of valuable information, multiple vectors for accessing information, large workforces and dependence on vendors, to name a few.
  • First, the increasing incorporation of technology into hotel operations can lead to more breaches.
  • Predicting the future is a difficult and fraught task, but in this case, it is straightforward – there is no reason to expect that the number of cyberattacks will drop
  •
I was very intrigued with this article, as Braun mentions cyberattacks on hotels in a very straightforward manner. Hotels are in a competition of enhancing their technology everyday, however, with this enhancement comes more of a liability of getting cyber hacked. In addition, our industry deals with a lot of third party companies, making it easier to hack information as well. As Braun mentions, attacks nowadays, are not only for credit card information, but also simple data on guests, such as passwords to loyalty programs, and other credentials. Therefore, as technology grows, the only thing predictable is that hacks will get more dangerous. So, the one true thing our industry must do is prepare ourselves as best as we can.

Could hotels' secret weapon be in-stay technology? - 1 views

  • Hotels are fighting hard for customers and currently a lot of that effort goes into getting their marketing in front of guests' eyeballs and winning the booking
  • Here, technology, both at the customers fingertips and behind the scenes, is now capable of making a real difference and winning over the customer's loyalty says EyeforTravel's new free report, The Future of In-Stay Technology.
  • These technologies are putting the hotel's capabilities back in front of the guest whilst making their stay a more convenient and comfortable experience.
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Furthermore, these technologies not only help hotels serve guests better and improve their ratings, they present enormous upsell opportunities that can help restore those all-important margins.
  • "Detailed guest preferences are a valuable thing and not only are you elevating the customer experience, your reinforcing that your hotel is delivering the service, not the intermediary. Smart tech in the hotel is a better way of gathering, storing and utilising key information that an OTA doesn't have."
  • Data gathered can not only be used as mentioned above for providing guests with services but also behind the scenes to improve staff performance.
  •
I found this article extremely interesting because in today's world, almost everyone relies on technology for everything. From googling what 25 centimeters is in inches, to emailing your cousin who lives across the world from you. So why not, bring that favorite technology with you when you go away? Like the article mentions, these smart apps, and chat bots, not only helps guests have a more comfortable stay, but also helps things go more smoothly for staff. In addition, these technologies allow hotels to make it a better stay for guests, by recording specific preferences, leading to increased loyalty. All in all, if it helps it make a more convenient experience for both the guest and staff at the hotel, I say it is a winner!

Opinion: Cloud accounting transforming the hospitality sector - Manchester Evening News - 3 views

  • accounting
  • Cloud accounting is allowing more and more businesses operating in the hospitality sector to reduce costs and make better business decisions through access to real time data and reports that can be analysed and turned into actionable insights.
  • accounting
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • The software collects valuable data that will allow users to make better business decisions.
  • This brings together POS, rota and payroll systems that all communicate with one another reducing time spent rekeying information potentially saving hours.
  • Ultimately, if you want to provide a better service to your customers while reducing staff turnover cloud accounting may be the solution for you.
  •
Although short, I found this article incredibly interesting after learning about the MIS manager role. MIS managers are meant to keep track of information systems, making sure the results are correct and being implemented. Well, what if you had an "accountant" who did all that for you, and more? It seems cloud accounting is doing just that for any industry, including the hospitality sector. The cloud software is a system that brings all the company's information systems together under one virtual roof, this can include POS, payroll systems, and more. Not only does the cloud accountant promise more accurate data, but also saves time and money, allowing businesses to better service their guests.
