This activity is targeted to the critical analysis and construction of understanding of war poetry.  The tasks involve developing an understanding of the effects that warfare has on the individual soldier as a snapshot of the battle experience that most men experienced during the brutal trench war conflicts of the first world war.

The Harvard-Yenching Library holds some 5,000 photographs and 10,000 negatives taken by Hedda Hammer Morrison (1908-1991) while resident in Beijing from 1933 to 1946. The photographs, mounted in thematic albums prepared by Mrs. Morrison, and the negatives, were bequeathed to the Harvard-Yenching Library, "the best permanent home for her vision of a city and people that she loved [Alastair Morrison]."

Our new National Curriculum takes a world history approach, which is a new direction for history in my State. This is an interesting argument for big-picture, as opposed to civilisational or thematic, approaches to conceptualising history. 

This site looks really elementary, but DON'T be fooled! This company has units for various History subject areas (world, american, gov't, etc) that are based around activities AND taking lessons learned in the activities and making higher order thinking connections. I"m probably not doing the best job annotating this - but i will say this, I have one of the units and my students go NUTS over the activities and with their debriefing worksheets and discussion questions, my students really "get" the concepts and retain the learning.

The BBC archives offers free access to themed collections of radio and TV programmes, documents and photographs. These are thematic selections of primary sources from an archive which began over 70 years ago.

Excellent source for British social and cultural history.

"Documenting the American South (DocSouth) is a digital publishing initiative that provides Internet access to texts, images, and audio files related to southern history, literature, and culture. Currently DocSouth includes twelve thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs." That's what they say. Run by the University of North Carolina.

Teaches American History through pop/rock music. Online resources include images, vocabulary, leveled questions, standardized prep, DBQ and thematic essay questions. Students learn American history with thier iPods and internet.

Has links to some example course documents from universities and a high school in America and Australia. I'm always interested in checking out how other people organise their courses; I'm redoing our Modern History Program at the moment. I prefer the chronological rather than thematic approach, although it seems it's going out of fashion these days.
