I'd argue that mass production schools like phoenix are leading the on-line charge in education, embracing web 2.0 and other technologies to better compete against the old guard and other younger institutions. Sure the old guard have more resources, but are they reaching more students? Will they always have more resources?

Education Week: Twitter Lessons in 140 Characters or Less - 1 views

  • “It’s not a research-based tool,” said Daniel T. Willingham, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville. “The most important thing to remember is that we have no idea what impact these tools have on learning, and it will take a decade to answer that question.”
  • A few studies have found some positive correlations between text-messaging aptitude and literacy. Research on gaming and educational multimedia programs have also shown some positive impact on learning. But few scientific experiments can show a direct link between the use of such technology and student achievement.

Moodle 2.0 has just come out. For those of you who don't know, Moodle is an open-source course management system that has been popular for teachers and schools by virtue of being free, but it has lost some steam to more expensive and more refined LMSs like Blackboard in recent years. It will be interesting to see if this new release will be more user friendly and therefore popular

The Situation - Television Tropes & Idioms - 0 views

  • Google pulled all their ads on October 26th, due to TOS violations on the part of the wiki and forums — specifically "adult and mature content" on pages that carried Google Adsense ads. These ads provided far and away the majority of the site's operating budget.
  • Turn off anonymous editing in the wiki. This is so that we can tell Google, "See, we do have standards, and we can identify and take action against people who violate them." This has already been implemented.
  • Segregate "adult and mature content" behind some sort of barrier that you will have to explicitly agree to go through. This has been implemented
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • Nofollow tags will be attached to outbound links on wiki pages. This is an invisible-to-users tag that tells the Ad Server "The following link goes somewhere that isn't us. Don't hold us responsible for their content."
  •
TV Tropes is being very transparent about creating a moderation system for the content. This is in response to loosing advertising dollars from Google. It is interesting to see the outline for their model of moderating content. Some of these elements could be used in a web 2.0 environment for education

Ed 2.0 Social networking and education - 1 views

  •
Great article along with an infographic on the usage of social network in US education "Wikis are an excellent tool for open collaboration and knowledge sharing because they allow everyone to contribute. Roughly 22 percent of United States school districts are involved in creating or maintaining wikis. Educational wikis give teachers and students a place to contribute to the community on the ideas and projects they are working on in the classroom. Wikis teach students how teamwork and collaboration benefit society through knowledge sharing."
