Gates funds edX to bring their courses/content to the community college setting. Is K-12 next?

Interesting point Harvey - thanks for weighing in! Per Clay Christensen, disruptive innovators often target the least desirable/most under-served segment of the market upon entry - the business that the established folks don't bother to pursue (think Southwest Airlines, etc). They then evolve up the value chain, ultimately displacing the large, established guys.

Chip, that's what makes this especially curious: it's the major players (Harvard, MIT, etc.) who are pursuing the least-served part of the market here - Christensen would argue that they are more like to pursue sustaining, not disruptive innovation! In essence, EdX is seeking to disrupt the teaching of entry-level, profit-generating classes at other schools, while possibly undermining their own teaching of the same topics. Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

Can an emerging technology be 'disruptive' and 'emerging' at the same time? Pre-disruption perhaps? Either way, I don't see this hack replacing the bulky, expensive and single use mode of the standard cardiovascular systems, but then again, is't that how these things develop? Imagine a game that actually got your heart moving (ala Nintendo Wii Fitness) while also running a diagnostic analysis on the back end... Still, Donkey Kong has a terrible bedside manner.

Newest Disney attraction called - Sum of All Thrills where kids get to design their own virtual roller coaster. It uses virtual-reality technology. "Disney hopes the interactive nature of the ride would also help kids learn that math and science can be fun."

While I would not consider this incredibly expensive ride a 'distruptive innovation' or even an emerging ed technology, what Epcot has done by bringing this DIY-VR concept to the masses (if you are one of the masses that can A- afford Disney and B-have the patience to wait in line for `5-6 hours) is very important to future ed tech innovation strategies. The progression/invention of such cost prohibitive entertainment tools will fall squarely on the high-end theme parks and consumer venues. The challenge has been set by Epcot and now others must either compete directly or develop a better or more accessible solution. Off the top of my head, I can think of a few cost saving innovations that might be developed in this 'race'- Artificial G-Force Engline: variable air pressure, smart-chairs, fans

Another fun RSA Animate video -- this one about Steven Johnson's "Where Good Idea From." Possible relevance for thinking not only about tech's role for students, but also how collaboration enabled by technology can yield big -- possibly disruptive? -- ideas among innovators in education.

So this is mostly an article by Clayten Christensen on types of innovation, but towards the end he mentions education and the kinds of skills we should be teaching future innovators and entrepreneurs to make sure our economy runs.

I have experienced this first hand. Adults find it cute to watch their young children staring deeply into their cell phones (iphones) as they pop digital balloons, etc. Disruptive? Def. if you are sitting next to this family at a restaurant.

Sacramento, CA, November 26, 2012- They had a simple idea: Find a brilliant mix of innovative people from different professions. Get them together in one space for a day. Invite teachers, EdTech visionaries, hackers and entrepreneurs and encourage them to work on ideas, partnerships, networks, even businesses with the goal of jump starting the economy and revolutionizing education. This should be an interesting conference to monitor - maybe a new educational disruptive design will emerge!

This article shows how Louisiana is trying to adapt "modular" courses to complement or replace instruction in certain subjects, largely mitigated by the Common Core.

The further along I go, the more I am realizing that we have fully arrived in the information age. For our nation to compete globally - we must get out of the trap of growing media consumers, technology consumers, and information consumers. We must grow a generation of students who not only use technology, but understand technology so that they can become active technology producers, so that they can create, innovate, imagine, and disrupt. Possibly, understanding computer science will be as important as learning to read and write - the new literacy.

This sounds like a disruptive innovation. Zap the brain!

I love competative learning labs. I wish this project based co-opetition model were a standard in our schools. Innovation and team dynamics are mindsets and skills that need to be developed in our kids.
