Title: Research Sheds Light on How Babies Learns ans Develop Language Author: Kimberly Kopko, Ph.D. Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant in terms of research methods used in discovering the steps to language development in children. The article discusses the ways that babies begin to understand and categorize words long before a child actually verbalizes. It touches base on the way that adults interact with babies/infants greatly aids language development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This did not influence my thinking but gave me better understanding of how language development begins with categorization. Credibility of Source:This is a credible source. It is a write up of the extensive research done by Dr. Marianella Casasola and Associate Professor of Human Development at Cornell University.

Title: Changes in Mechanical Control of Movement During the First 5 Months of Independent Walking: A Longitudinal Study. Author: Ann Hallemans Date Published: May 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant to the study because it demonstrate a longitudinal study done on infant of the earlier stages of walking. It also provides research done and the methods that were included as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This had influence my way of thinking by now knowing that earlier development is in walking is not only with our nervous system but as well with our mental capability. Credibility of Source: Scholarly article found on EBSCOhost.

Title: The Alarming Reason Why More Girls are Starting Puberty Early Author: Dr. Joseph Mercola Date Published: August 26, 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: This article was relevant because it explains a great deal of information that be or may not be factors in why girls are going through puberty at much younger ages than they once were just 20 years ago. In this article, Dr. Mercola explains some of the largest factors or early onset of puberty and explains why those things may cause early childhood puberty. How This Influenced My Thinking: This didn't so much influence my thinking as it confirmed my belief that chemicals in the food our children eat may very well play a major role in when they begin puberty. Credibility of Source: I find this article to be highly credible, Dr. Mercola seems to have done extensive research on the topic as well as included the input of other knowledgeable professionals.

Title: Researching cause and effect Author: Lance Jones Date published: Jan 15th, 2012 Why is this relevant: This power point is relevant because it gives you many recources that would help someone understand what cause and effect is. For example, it provides you with background information on it, states the 3 main characteristics of it, on top of providing you with many examples that really help your understanding of the topic. The slide is very user-friendly and easy to understand. It even provides synonyms for words in case you don't understand. How this influenced my thinking: It has influenced my thinking in a couple ways. One, i never knew there were so many aspects to cause and effect. There are two variables that must be related, two sides to the correlation, and the cause must come before the effect and not vise versa. Two, it really helped me understand why a person would use the cause and effect method, and also why it might not be the best method for some types of studies. Credibility of source: Although id like to think this comes from a very credible source, there is not really anything on the site that indicates it is....

Title: Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development Author: Devan Udall Date Published: June 25, 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: The information provided in this video is a clear, factual presentation of Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development. In chapter eight of our Human Development textbook we will be discussing adolescence and will go over theories surrounding morality, Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development is one of them. This video gives a brief introduction to Kohlberg's research and professional career. It presents The Stages of Moral Development as well as recorded interviews illustrating the Heinz Dilemma experiment. How This Influenced My Thinking: I found this reference video supporting some of my theories surrounding moral development. However, as I was doing more research I realized how many variables were not being considered in Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development. As I challenged Kohlberg's theory on its broader application I thought about what research methods could be used to provide supportive evidence. Credibility of Source: I have found additional reference material that supports the information provided in this video.

Title: Milestones in Bilingual Children's Language Development Author: Annick De Houwer Date Published: 07/31/2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This is a relevant article because it is looking at language development, focusing on how children that grow up hearing two languages from infancy develop, and whether or not there are any discernible delays as children learn to process two languages. How This Influenced My Thinking: I thought that this was a very interesting article walking me through the developmental process of a bilingual child, I think that giving a child a chance to grow up with more than one language is very helpful, and this article supports my feelings. Credibility of Source: I think that it is a fairly credible source; the website is published through the University of Western Ontario,

How This Influenced My Thinking:it has made me have a respect and understanding for how language begins.  It has made me think about how it all starts with the simple sounds an infant makes Credibility of Source: It seems to be a very credible source.

Title: Identity Formation in Adolescence: Change or Stability? Author:Klimstra, Hale, Raaijmakers, Branje, and Meeus Date Published: February 27, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: This is a relevant article because it shows research done on comparing weather identity formation is stable in adolescence or is it progressively changes. It refers to Erikson's theory as well as theorys from Waterman and Van Hoof. How This Influenced My Thinking: This has influenced my thinking by introducing me to new identity theories and exploring those theories and ideas more indepth. Credibility of Source: This is a credible source since it has many references to all the information provided and the article tells who the authors are and dates published.

Title: Identity formation Author: Rice and Dolgen Date published: 2002 Why relevant and summary: This article was a good summary of identity formation and a good in-depth look at James Marcia's four identity status' that make up his theory of identity formation. How this influenced my thinking: I have always been intrigued about what makes people who they are and why some have such a strong personality or sense of who they are while others seem lost as to who they are. This article made me think that mabe the amount of dramatic experiences one faces creates their personality or who they want to be. Credibility of source: I think this came from a book, seems credible most of the info was very similar to wikipedia.

Title: Identity Formation Author: Rice and Dolgin Date Published: 2009 Why Relevant and summary: On this article it discusses different stages that an individual may be in or is going through regarding their identity. It goes in depth on identity formation stages, regarding politics, religion, a vocational goal and more clearly defined sex roles. How this influenced my thinking: I can relate to it because I can relate to some of the stages and understand them better. I also became more informed. Credibility of Source: It seems credible I believe it came from a book perhaps even a textbook.

Title: Sleepless Nights May Put The Aging Brain At Risk Of Dementia Author: Patti Neighmond Date Published: August 27, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: As we age, our body's sleep cycle naturally changes. As teenagers our body's clock (influences by internal temperature) induces sleep from about midnight to late morning, while as adults our body's clock induces sleep from about 8pm to 4am; therefore our body's needs change as we age. Plus, 40% of older adults suffer from sleep problems such as insomnia. The lack of deep sleep, and specifically of REM sleep, is connected to memory loss and can lead to dementia. This is relevant in our develop as humans in that awareness of our sleep habits and patterns have more of an effect on us that just a temporary sleepiness the next day, but in the long run it can effect our ability to have better memory as we age. Credibility of Source: The article comes from NPR's Health Blog. There is also a sound recording of the article with clips from the author on the webpage. The autor is Psychiatrist Kristine Yaffe of the University of California, San Francisco. Very credible.

Title: Beginnings, Growth and Development Author: Dr. Mark Hill Date Published: 2010 Why Relevant and Summary: Many factors contribute to prenatal development: nutrition, health, environment, drug use, illness. Abnormalities are at greater risk of occurring during critical periods of development. This period is highest during the embryonic stage. By gathering research on what affects prenatal development, we can pinpoint when pregnant women are most at risk and the factors, thereby preventing congenital problems. How This Influenced My Thinking: It's very surprising how a span of 6 weeks can have such a life changing impact on a person before they're even born. It's crucial that women who are pregnant or may become pregnant be informed and get the proper care needed before and during a pregnancy. Credibility of Source: The publication comes form The University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. This seems to have been created by one of the professors.

Title:Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Author: KidsHealth Date Published:1995 Why Relevant and Summary: This is an in depth article about OCD, it's possible causes, relative behaviors of a child with OCD, signs and symptoms, diagnosing and treatment. How This Influenced My Thinking: I have a child with this disorder and this article was very informative for me as a person who had no background with this disorder. It helped to explain some of the behaviors I was witnessing and help me to make sense of it. Credibility of Source:Very credible as they use a host of different pediatricians and experts in the field to help keep the information as up to date as possible.

Title: Brain Keys Language Development Author: Beth Fleming Date Published: 2002 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it doesn't just breakdown step by step the stages of language development. But it gives examples as to what you can do. It gives research information. It tells you what you can do and what happens if you don't consistently talk to children. It encourages not only ways to help develop language, but to communicate. How This Influenced My Thinking: It influenced my thinking because of my own children. I talk to my children all the time NOW, but had I talked to them more and more when they were smaller, their development would be at different stage now. I agree that the research is consistent with results. Should I have another child, this impacts how I might do things differently. Credibility of Source: Beth Fleming is a Family Life Specialist

Title:  Identity Development Throughout the Lifetime: An Examination of Eriksonian Theory Author: Justin T. Sokol Date Published: March 1, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: Erikson's theories are relevant to almost all types of research on identity development. Identity development is a life-span process, as Eriksonian theories suggest. This particular publication is an in depth examination of Erikson's theories on identity development: identification in early childhood, Identity formation in adolescence, identity development in adulthood. How This Influenced My Thinking: I agree with the research: Identity development is an ongoing process that continues through adulthood. I see examples of this looking over my childhood, adolescence and adulthood so far. At 32 years old, I can honestly agree with Erikson's theories on identity development - I feel as though my identity (though does not change drastically anymore) certainly continues to develop. Credibility of Source:  This publication is from Graduate Journal of Counseling Psychology at Marquette University, so is likely highly credible

Title: Future Identities: Changing Identities in the UK - the next 10 years Author: Nicole Ellison Date Published: January 2013 Why Relevant & Summary: This paper gives a thorough and detailed review of how social media is continuing to influence personal identity and the concept of self. Its focus on social and psychological impact, show how the influence of social media is effecting and changing our culture and sense of self. Current data of emerging trends, is stated clearly, logically, and within the standards of psychological research. A handy table of contents allows the reader to explore varying and related sub-topics with ease. How this influenced my thinking: This paper presents many terms which are relevant to this topic, but of which I was previously unaware of. The writer cites other published articles dealing with this new phenomenon. Credibility of Source: Highly credible due to publishing by the UK's Government Office For Science, cited credible resources, and recent data

Title: The Development of Self-Esteem Author: Sue and Jo Date Published: No Date Why Relevant and Summary: This is a straightforward summary of a child's cognitive development of self-esteem. Although it doesn't include many details of what contributes to a child's self-esteem it does clearly define what its makeup is. How This Influenced My Thinking: This was interesting to me because it summed up the definition of self-esteem in a nutshell. I am personally interested in how to promote a healthy self-esteem in children but this website gives a good foundation for the outline of what self-esteem is and what factors affect it. Credibility of Source: It looks like it's some sort of personal website; however, it does cite studies and seems to back up its statements with scientific data.

Title: The Tribal Mind: Moral Reasoning and Public Discourse Author: Arnold Kling Date Published: April 26, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: As soon as I saw this article I thought it was great. In a very interesting way it explain what moral reasoning is and how it is developed, influenced upon and used in today's complicated world. It taps on issues that we are faced with daily, especially coming after a presidential election where the "morals" of each side where being discussed and with a fierce public discourse. This essay also discusses some great books written about the topic and the author does a great job at explaining how our own personal moral values and beliefs are used to justify our behavior and manipulate others; and also how these moral decisions are very often based on instinct and rapid judgment rather than rational thought. The author maintains the position that even though we have come along as a society we still behave sometimes in tribal manner, and that goes not only for how we conduct business or personal relationships but also how this great country of ours is run. How This Influenced My Thinking: As a young person, and as a mother of two young boys, I took in all the information that I got from this article; I think I am going to read it again and also read the books that were used to support some of the thinking behind it. I believe that when someone truly understand where someone else is coming from it will be easier to comprehend their thinking and the commitment that they have to their moral compass. Also interesting to find out was how often rushed moral judgment occurs in our society, and how that directly impact all of us. It was a great article with a great deal of food for thought. Credibility of Source: It was published on "The American" an online magazine of the American Enterprise Institute and its author is a member of the Financial Markets Working Group at the Mercatus Center of George Mason University

It is what allows us to speak to other human beings and understand those around us. How This Influenced My Thinking: I did not think that language was as important as I thought it would be. But come to think of it, language is what makes human, humans. We are so different from other being that we communicate through language, whether it is hums, or hymns, or even hand gestures. Title: Empathy, Mindblindness, and Theory of Mind Author: Lynne Soraya Date Published: May 19, 2008 Why Relevant and Summary: An excellent overview of Theory of mind. The article also explains how researchers test for theory of mind. It links theory of mind to the concept of Empathy, and explores whether people with Asperger's lack empathy or simply the ability to read social cues. Several excellent links, quotes, and a diagram explaining how the topic is researched. How This Influenced My Thinking: I know of several families that have children diagnosed with Asperger's. The article raises the possibility that those children with Asperger's could benefit from learning how to read social cues, and that their ability to empathize could be fine. Better interpretation of social cues would help them with their theory of mind regarding how others feel. Credibility of Source: Comes from a published magazine, Psychology Today. Likely to be fairly credible.
