How this influenced my thinking: This just really clarified all the stages for me. Credibility of source: This was an article from about.com i think it is pretty credible.

Title: Importance of prenatal sound and music Author: Giselle E Whitwell Date Published: It doesn't say Why Relevant and Summary: This was an amazing article! It was talking about the sound decibel of conversations or music outside of the womb. She goes to talking about how a baby might respond when the mother is in a certain environment and sometimes, what the effects may be after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: While some of this is common knowledge, I never really knew or understood the importance of sound and how detrimental it can be in later stages of childhood. I see it now in my own children. I played a lot of music when I was pregnant and my kids love listening to it and dancing to it. Sometimes, you just don't think about these things. Credibility of Source: It's posted on an Association of Prenatal and Health. I don't think they would give false information.

Title: Bonding with your baby Author: Kids Health. Reviewed by Larissa Hirsch, MD Date Published: January 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: In our format, he asks us to give information on bonding and survival after birth. This article talks about bonding and how it really affects both the child and the parent. Its relevant because it's an important part of pregnancy, communicating and bonding while in the womb. This article also gives examples of what a positive environment might look like when bonding has taken place in the womb, and what it looks like after birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: It shows me that singing and talking to your belly is absolutely okay. Some people don't rub their belly or talk to their baby and sometimes, that can cause a slight disconnection in bonding when the baby is born. It will be something I keep in mind for my next pregnancy. Credibility of Source: This information is given on a Kids Health page and was reviewed by an M.D.

How This Influenced My Thinking: I did realize before that babies were really capable of hearing while still in their Mothers bellies. Credibility of Source:Fairly credible

Title: Faith's Story: In Utero Fetal Surgery for Repair of Spina Bifida Author: No author, video Date uploaded: 2012 Why relevant: Further expounds on the class discussion that we had about surgery in utero to repair spina bifida. Is an interesting video talking, there isn't a great deal of technical information, but it is still pretty good How this influenced my thinking: It made me think more about the development process that a fetus goes through and to think about how important is is to be healthy while pregnant. Even though the causes of spina bifida are unknown, it is still good maintain a healthy lifestyle. Credibility of source: There isn't much technical information, it is more the story of a couple who had surgery in utero to try and correct birth defects

It talks about pregnancy, things to consider, possible locations for birth, and methods for birth. How This Influenced My Thinking: I hadn't realized how many different birth methods there were. Credibility of Source: It seems credible, the article is very informative and the website has a lot information on women's health

How This Influenced My Thinking: Many detailed information on a lot of things I didn't know about different cultures. Credibility of Source: Seems credible because it has many different sources backing it up.

Title: How people make their own environments: a theory of genotype → environment effects Author: Sandra Scarr and Kathleen McCartney Date Published: April 1983 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it goes into much further detail about the genotype → environment effects theory compared to the book. This article proposes that a child's genotype can "directly affect its rearing environment," which is a point that was not as explicit in the textbook. Overall, this article emphasizes a greater role of genotype influence in the process of human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by taking on a more opinionated perspective on the genotype → environment effects theory. The class textbook takes on a very objective approach to explaining, and this article takes it a step further by adding onto it. Although this article is outdated, it still provided me with a new train of thought. I found this to be an interesting article, but at times, hard to read. Credibility of Source: Very good (though outdated).

Title: 'Identical Strangers' Explore Nature vs. Nurture Author: JOE RICHMAN OF RADIO DIARIES Date Published: October 25, 200712:50 PM Why Relevant and Summary: Great interview and information of adopted twins in a natural experiment. How This Influenced My Thinking: Listening to real people tell their story on being twins and a part of a study of how nature vs. nurture has impacted them individually has contributed greatly to my understanding.

Title: The Latest Science of Nature Versus Nurture Author: Stefan Molyneux Date Published: May 25, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This video is breaks down all factors from genetics to environmental influences that contribute to human development. The video shows the importance of prenatal care to environmental effects on individuals after they have been born. How This Influenced My Thinking: Reviewing this video has really made me think on which plays a bigger role on a person's development. I have come to the conclusion that genetics play the leading role but not by much. The human fetal stage is very fragile and will induce any stress that it has encountered, from emotional stress, to chemical through the actions of the mother. Credibility of Source: Stefan Molyneux who is a radio broadcaster, is really a collector of information rather than a scholarly researcher, who merely reposts other's findings from educated researchers.

Title: Height Hopes A new study identifies potential height genes Author: No authors are listed Date Published: also unlisted, but it was written sometime after 2007 because that was the date of one the references used in the article. Why Relevant: The article talks about how height is based on your genes as well as you your environment. It mentions twin studies as well as talking about how scientists are trying to determine which genes are responsible for determining height. How This Influenced My Thinking: The article had some great information about twin studies and how they have been used to look at how much your height is a genetic factor. Credibility of Source: Decent, The website is put out through a museum that is associated with the University of Stanford. But since there isn't a date, or author it lowers the credibility of the source.

Brent Date Published:April 1, 2004 Why Relevant and Summary: Contains information on teratogens from various kinds to what malformations they can cause in the body. This article starts off by describing the criteria to be classified as a teratogen. There are three categories of congenital malformations: unknown, genetic, and environmental. The severity of effects of teratogen are determined by time of exposure and amount of exposure or threshold dose. How This Influenced My Thinking: There are specific criteria in order to be classified as caused by teratogen. Credibility of Source: The source is highly credible. It comes from the Journal of American Academy of Pediatrics.

Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory Author: Dede Paquette and John Ryan Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: Explains Bronfenbrenner's theory and connects it to modern child development and compares this to child development when the economy was more industrial, less technological. It also explains Bronfenbrenner's concerns with our technological world. The 5th page looks at the human body as a part of a person's microsystem, which was fascinating, especially since the textbook doesn't seem to consider this. How This Influenced My Thinking: Introduced the idea of the human body as being part of the microsystem - new to me! Also, I learned that this model can play a big role in influencing public policies, which is refreshing because as a student, it's easy to get caught up in this thinking that the classroom stuff isn't relevant or doesn't easily apply to the real world… but it can! Credibility of Source: Pretty good - the work cites a lot of educational resources, and I read the company profile, which seems to be run by qualified people.

Title: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory Author: Dede Paquette and John Ryan Date Published: July 12, 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: It gives an in depth overview of Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory while analyzing and providing examples of the many components to the healthy development of a child. How This Influenced My Thinking: It hasn't particularly influenced my thinking but has given a better understanding of how the theory applies. Credibility of Source: Good- (.edu website)

Title: Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory Author: Dede Paquette - John Ryan Date published: 7/12/01 Why relevant and summary: This site is relevant because it explains what Bronfenbrenner's theory is and what it encompasses. As well as stating what the theory is, the site also goes over in detail, all the different systems associated with Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory. There is also an illustration with various terms that provides links to sites that explain the implications of each theory. How it influenced my thinking: This site influenced my thinking in a positive way because it broke down what each system was, what it entailed, and gave examples of what was being discussed. Credibility of source: The source is very credible and is riddled with citations and works cited pages. The link to it also ends in usd.edu which means it is probably a site made by colleges for colleges.

Title: Genes vs. Environment Author: University of Edinburgh Date Published: May 16, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: This article provides information on over 800 sets of experiments that were done to prove how genes played a more important role in development than the environment. How This Influenced My Thinking: This made me want to conduct my own research or do my own study on twins who were separated at birth to see how identical their characteristics were after five or ten years of being apart. That would help me see for myself if genetics really do have a greater inpact than environment does on development. Credibility of Source: This source is credible because the information was derived from universities, journals, and other research organizations and they have references to all the information they used.

Title: Genetics Author:QLD Science teachers Date published: ND Why relevant and summary: This site discusses genetics and many of the terms we were introduced to in our text and in class. It goes over dominant and recessive genes, what alleles are, phenotypes, genotypes and much more. It provides you with examples and definitions of words, and walks you through how to determine if a trait is dominant or recessive. How it influenced my thinking: It influenced my thinking by helping me see the difference between things like phenotypes and genotypes, as well as providing pictures and diagrams to further help with my understanding. Credibility of source: The site is obviously made by science teachers but it doesn't say who, or where they are from. I'd say this site is credible because it seems to provide you with good and accurate information, but you probably can't use it as a source for a research paper.

Date Published: 2001 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is very relevant because it discusses how nature and nurture can play a role in the human development. The authors do so by discussing how schizophrenia can be both due to nature and nurture by giving examples. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article showed me how both nature and nurture can effect the human development and we cat rule out one for the other. Credibility of Source: This source was found on ebscohost and is from the journal "Perspectives in Psychiatric."

Owne, Peter McGufin Date Published:June 17, 1994 Why Relevant and Summary: Because the article gives and in depth look the importance of genetic factors in many complex dimensions and disorders of human behavior. How This Influenced my thinking? : it has made me more aware of the importance of both the genetic and environmental influences on mental health.
