Title: A review of successful aging models: Proposing proactive coping as an important additional strategy Author: Carolijn Ouwehand, Denise T.D. de Ridder, Jozien M. Bensing Date Published: Aug. 3, 2006 Why relevant and summary: This is a really great look into aging successfully and what that process entails. It delves into selective optimization with compensation. The authors argue that proactive coping - attempting to prevent potential stressors that are the cause of this decrease in resources - may be a valuable strategy for successful aging. The authors also present this theory as a method of postponing disengagement from daily activities. How this influenced my thinking: I have not given much thought to aging, although I know it is happening and will continue to happen. I've always just kind of viewed the elderly with a distant form of respect coupled with a bit of sorrow. Let's face it, who wants to get old? Yet, this will happen to all of us unless (god forbid) some unforseen tragedy strikes first. Reading about ways to gracefully and successfully age and avoid or postpone disengagement, will go a long way as people enter older adulthood. When I reach older adulthood, I hope to be as active as that 106 year old man who started running marathons in his 80s!

How This Influenced My Thinking: Informed me of other perceptions and views of childbirth--things I was unaware of; I was not familiar with any other views of childbirth but that of the U.S.'s. How This Influenced My Thinking: Informed me more about the serious and grave nature of obesity and it's affect upon the health of the individual; alerted of the growing presence of obesity in our country. It gives facts about child obesity and lays out the complications or repercussions of being obese as a child or adolescents. How This Influenced My Thinking: This article has influenced my thinking by discussing so many factors that influence a child's weight and doesn't blame the parent as being a careless or lazy parent rather it points to specific factors, such as socioeconomic status and genetics. Credibility of Source: This source is credible. It was written by a doctor and is on emedicine.com

Its focus on social and psychological impact, show how the influence of social media is effecting and changing our culture and sense of self. Current data of emerging trends, is stated clearly, logically, and within the standards of psychological research. A handy table of contents allows the reader to explore varying and related sub-topics with ease. How this influenced my thinking: This paper presents many terms which are relevant to this topic, but of which I was previously unaware of. The writer cites other published articles dealing with this new phenomenon. It makes sense and explains how hte theory was tested. How It Influenced My Thinking: I remember watching a TV show a while ago that showed this phenomenon in monkeys of some kind. I recall that this was new information to me, however I was not surprised. It makes total sense. Nature is brilliant. Credibility of Source: Very credible. Title: Parenting -Child Development Prenatal Care and Development Author: Healthline Date Published: 2010 Why relevant and summary: This website is relevant in that it talks about the signs on how to determine whether one is pregnant and what to do after. This website continues by describing the stages of development and what to expect when expecting. It ends by discussing the importance of healthcare all around from environment to doctors visits. How this influenced my thinking: I was able to learn a little more on why it is imperative to consider all the different possibilities when having a child and how it is crucial that one sustains a healthy condition throughout their pregnancy in order to give their child the best outcome possible. Credibilty of Source: This source was reviewed by another party.

Title: How people make their own environments: a theory of genotype → environment effects Author: Sandra Scarr and Kathleen McCartney Date Published: April 1983 Why Relevant and Summary: This is relevant because it goes into much further detail about the genotype → environment effects theory compared to the book. This article proposes that a child's genotype can "directly affect its rearing environment," which is a point that was not as explicit in the textbook. Overall, this article emphasizes a greater role of genotype influence in the process of human development. How This Influenced My Thinking: This influenced my thinking by taking on a more opinionated perspective on the genotype → environment effects theory. The class textbook takes on a very objective approach to explaining, and this article takes it a step further by adding onto it. Although this article is outdated, it still provided me with a new train of thought. I found this to be an interesting article, but at times, hard to read. Credibility of Source: Very good (though outdated).

Author: Ann Hallemans Date Published: May 2007 Why Relevant and Summary: This article is relevant to the study because it demonstrate a longitudinal study done on infant of the earlier stages of walking. It also provides research done and the methods that were included as well. How This Influenced My Thinking: This had influence my way of thinking by now knowing that earlier development is in walking is not only with our nervous system but as well with our mental capability. It is in a womenshealth website reviews by healthcare professionals so it is taken into account for many women who are about to have a child or are thinking of having a child. Title: Researching cause and effect Author: Lance Jones Date published: Jan 15th, 2012 Why is this relevant: This power point is relevant because it gives you many recources that would help someone understand what cause and effect is. For example, it provides you with background information on it, states the 3 main characteristics of it, on top of providing you with many examples that really help your understanding of the topic. The slide is very user-friendly and easy to understand. It even provides synonyms for words in case you don't understand. How this influenced my thinking: It has influenced my thinking in a couple ways. One, i never knew there were so many aspects to cause and effect. There are two variables that must be related, two sides to the correlation, and the cause must come before the effect and not vise versa. Two, it really helped me understand why a person would use the cause and effect method, and also why it might not be the best method for some types of studies. How This Influenced My Thinking: I thought that this was a very interesting article walking me through the developmental process of a bilingual child, I think that giving a child a chance to grow up with more than one language is very helpful, and this article supports my feelings. Title: Psychology Assignment on Bronfenbrenner for LIT Author: 1976fifi Date Published: 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: Engaging and a bit funny. This is a thorough video that demonstrates and explains Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory while demonstrating plenty of examples. How This Influenced My Thinking: This video presented a bit more information and examples which helped me understand the theory as well as Bronfenbrenner's strong interests in social environment and cultural impact. Credibility of Source: This video seems very credible with a lot of the information aligning with the information we read and was given to us in class.

The analogies and summaries were helpful to understand the ecological systems better. I was able to actually think about what I wanted to say and how to say it without being blocked from the unknowns.
