Title: What is Disengagement Theory? Author: Cristen Conger Date Published: April 7th, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: It details the disengagement theory and discusses how the study that produced this theory began and how the scholarly community regarded this theory. It also briefly compares it to other theories of aging that eventually developed. How This Influenced My Thinking: It gave a nice background to how the Disengagement Theory came about. It also is a good reminder that theories can become outdated. Just because a popular opinion is also a theory, it does not necessarily make it factual or "right." Credibility of Source: OK. Author: Cristen Conger Date Published: April 7, 2009 Why Relevant and Summary: Thoroughly explains the Disengagement Theory; identifies the positive and negative opinions of it and how it affects multiple relationships in the life of an elderly individual. Provides scenarios with which to examine the Disengagement Theory; enabled me to understand the effects it had on the elderly individual. How This Influenced My Thinking: I was able to compare and contrast it to a very opposite theory in successful aging, the Activity Theory. It forced me to think of ways in which the Disengagement Theory could have positive outcomes and influences on an elderly individual and their surrounding environment. Title: Why bodybuilding at age 93 is a great idea: Charles Eugster at TEDxZurich Author: Charles Eugster Date Published: 2012 Why Relevant & Summary: This video is motivational and gives tips on how to maintain/regain life at any age. How this influenced my thinking: Speaker, Eugster's advice flys in the face of socially acceptable behaviors, such as retirement. His life examples are provoking. Title: Successful Aging: The Second 50 Author: JOE VOLZ Date Published: 2000 Why Relevant and Summary: This is a great article talks about how people are living longer now days and how the worth of their life should be increased and just how to do that. How This Influenced My Thinking: It gave some fascinating statistics about aging adults and the aging process that I haven't thought of obviously, because I am only in my mid 20s. How This Influenced My Thinking: Lots of great statistics about how the sandwich generation is affected by economics Credibility of Source: Really credible - well written and sourced

Title: Using Toys to Support Infant-Toddler Learning and Development Author: Gabriel Guyton Date Published: September 2011 Why Relevant and Summary: This article discusses how caregivers can select and even make (using random household materials) age appropriate toys to support and enhance cognitive development. The author encourages finding toys that support development across all domains - cognitive development, fine motor, gross motor, language, etc. How this influenced my thinking: When I first sat down to right the short critical thinking assignment on cognition and toys, it did not even occur to me to write about home-made toys such as a simple first puzzle made out of a muffin tin and some small objects, yet in reality, things found around the house make some of the best toys - ones that really engage babies and toddlers and are truly beneficial to child development. Credibility of source: This article is from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), thus seems highly credible.

Title : Girls are more intelligent than boys, but men are more intelligent than women. Author : Satoshi Kanazawa Date : 10/03/2010 Why Relevant and Summary: It's relevant because in my paper, I discuss the debate of age difference in relationships. This article provides support in the maturation of girls and boys and why some people prefer the age difference and why some people may not. How This Influenced My Thinking It helps my thinking to understand where my husband and I are at in our marriage to where we were when we dated in high school. I was more mature than he was, but now he has matured and to be more intelligent than I am but we are equally mature enough. We are also 3 days apart in age.

This article briefly advises women on how to minimize negative affects of aging. Nothing particularly fascinating. How This Influenced My Thinking: No change. Pretty common sense. Credibility of Source: Good.

How this influenced my thinking: Helped me to look at what I can do now for future benefits. Credibility: No credibility shown but good information.

I discusses in depth what activity theory is and how it influences a healthier, happier aging process for the elderly. How this Influenced My Thinking: It gave me a better understanding as to why it is important for the elderly to stay in contact with the outside and how it can add years to their life just by talking and interacting with other people. How This Influenced My Thinking: It didn't really influence my thinking, however I did think that this article was full of interesting facts. Credibility of Source: A consider it fairly credible, The author has a PhD and seems very knowledgeable and gives many facts to supports her article.

It also walks through the different stages of attachment and where children are at in different points in their lives How This Influenced My Thinking: I felt like it gave a little more information and helped to clear some things up that I was wondering about in the textbook. Credibility of Source: pretty good, well written and well cited information in the article.

How this influenced my thinking: I found it very interesting that Bowlby thought that there is a link between separations with the mom at an early age and maladjustments later on. Credibility of Source: It is from the simply psychology website, seems credible.

How This Influenced My Thinking:  Brain development greatly influences me and I am always looking for information that I can put into practice. I have experience in working with youth who have faced maltreatment at an early age and I can see the lasting effects it has had on them. Title: Puberty Before Age 10: A New 'Normal'? Author: Elizabeth Weil Date Published: March 30th, 2012 Why Relevant and Summary: It goes through the very basic changes that are seen in puberty, but it's discussing these changes happening in very young girls. In this article, they describe the situation of a little girl in the first grade! How This Influenced My Thinking: Made me aware of what I was consuming and how I may decide to raise my children. It is concerning that there's a possibility of "outside" estrogen causing this early onset of puberty. It's also interesting that we do not note this trend in boys. Credibility of Source: Good - NY Times is very popular. The article contains advice from a variety of doctors and professionals.

Title:Why I Love My 50-Year-Old Body Date Published: January 7, 2013 Author: Dr. Lisa Kaplin Why Relevant and Summary: this article is relevant because it talks about the body at age 50. it tell people to love their body and not to discourage or be ashamed of it. it explains how to maintain being healthy and hoe to eat right at 50. it is a useful article for those who have body image issues at an older age. How This Influenced My Thinking: this made me realize that people have major body image issues even after they are older. it makes me stop and think that even through all that these older folk have been through, somehow the image that is distilled on the younger generation caught up to the older generation and made them want to be in their 20's all over again when their bodies were at the peak of being viewed as beautiful. Credibility: it was published by a doctor who has study within this field. seem pretty credible to me.
