  • Unlike the global internet, which enables virtually the entire world to connect, social networks have created very large, localised communities with far more limited international interaction.

So social networking sites are creating big scale barries ... never thought of that, but makes a lot of sense.
    • Joao Alves

It seems that these localised communities can be seen as online communities. Can they? What do you think?

Indeed they are. Facebook is legendary for allowing a lot of users to enter information into Facebook, but not to be able to take it out again. At the same time there's a problem as google can't search Facebook. It will be interesting however, to see how the new Facebook Connect will work out, which is an attempt from Facebook to open up their walled garden - see http://bit.ly/ZKgwj

ooops! sorry... obviously I have no clue how to control the comments here on Diigo, they keep coming up, somewhere else than where I thought they would be...

@Joao: yes, I definitely think that local communities can be seen as online communities. In fact, according to Wikipedia, here online communities are described as: "Virtual communities depend upon social interaction and exchange between users online. This emphasizes the reciprocity element of the unwritten social contract between community members. Web 2.0 is essentially characterized by virtual communities such as Flickr, Facebook, and Del.icio.us. A similar trend is starting to emerge within businesses where online or virtual communities are taking hold. These communities can be organizational, regional or topical depending on the business." "Organizational, regional or topical" - I think we can add technical to this list. Btw. it seems like wiki use the terms "online" and "virtual" interchangeably. PS. Can anyone teach me how to make comments on Diigo? Why don´t comments automatically follow each other from oldest to newest? Mine seems to all be stuck together no matter what I do.
  •
Peter, have you installed the Diigo toolbar? If you haven't, do it. With the Diigo toolbar you can make comments, highlight, bookmark sites, add sticky notes, etc.

Buy Facebook Ads Accounts Introduction If you are looking for the best buy Facebook ads accounts, then you can contact us. We have helped many businesses get the most powerful Facebook ad accounts at affordable prices. How to buy Facebook ads accounts You can buy Facebook ad accounts in three ways: You can buy a business manager account, which will allow you to manage all of your campaigns from one place. This is especially useful if you have more than one person running campaigns for different clients. You can also get an individual ad account from Facebook and use it for yourself or your company's own purposes. This option is good if there are no other people involved with the campaign (like when buying from the community). Finally, if all else fails-and it usually does-then there's always verification! Verification allows advertisers like yourself access to certain features that aren't available otherwise, such as being able to delete or change their own status updates/videos after they've been shared publicly by someone else without having any control over them beforehand.* What is a Facebook ad account? There are two types of Facebook advertising accounts: personal and business. A personal account is a profile that you use to promote something or someone else's business. For example, if you own a restaurant and want to advertise in your community, you would create a personal Facebook page so that people can find out about it if they were looking for places to eat near their homes or offices. You can also create an individual profile for yourself as well as groups on Facebook where other people can join up with their friends or colleagues who work at the same company (like Salesforce). These kinds of social media marketing strategies are fairly typical among businesses today because they offer great opportunities for communication between employees within large enterprises such as banks, airlines, or hospitals - all things which require teamwo

The Community Development Handbook - 10 views

  •
Community capacity is an important consideration in community development as the process of community development itself often results in increased capacity. Therefore, the two are interrelated but distinct. Combined or separate, they both have a great deal to do with developing potential and enhancing community living. This handbook was designed to look at community development, realizing that capacity building and other processes often get confused with it.

  • outsiders and newcomers learn the practice in concrete terms, and core members gain new insights from contacts with less-engaged participants
  • defined by knowledge rather than by task

  • development ultimately depends on internal leadership.
  • have intrinsic legitimacy in the community
  • They are nodes for the exchange and interpretation of information.
  • They can retain knowledge in "living" ways
  • They can steward competencies to keep the organization at the cutting edge
  • They provide homes for identities.
  • Identity is important because, in a sea of information, it helps us sort out what we pay attention to, what we participate in, and what we stay away from.
  • recognizing the work of sustaining them
  • giving members the time to participate in activities
  • value communities bring is acknowledged
  • The art is to help such communities find resources and connections without overwhelming them with organizational meddling.
  • No community can fully design the learning of another; but conversely no community can fully design its own learning.
  • Communities of practice develop around things that matter to people. As a result, their practices reflect the members' own understanding of what is important. Obviously, outside constraints or directives can influence this understanding, but even then, members develop practices that are their own response to these external influences. Even when a community's actions conform to an external mandate, it is the community–not the mandate–that produces the practice.
    • Violeta Cautin

Choice? Communities are created because their members choose to belong and participate to them. The can't be imposed.
  • Across business units: Important knowledge is often distributed in different business units.
  • Communities of practice arise as people address recurring sets of problems together

  • The core are analyzable and knowable -- they can be mapped, measured, and molded
  • Growing a community is not just adding new members. It requires adding both people and relationships -- nodes AND links.

  • One behaviour in online groups that has been extensively studied is that of the non-participating members, termed the ‘lurkers’ - Etienne Wenger[2] calls them Legitimate Peripheral Participants. Lurkers are widely known to be among the majority of defined members and they have been found to make up over 90% of most online groups. They are perhaps the most important members in view of their potential to contribute to online groups.

Are lurkers also part of the community or are they standers-by? IF they become part of the ocmmunity only after participating, after what amount of activity would they then be considered part of the community? If they ARE part of the community, what distinguishes them from mere interested on-lookers?

Blogs and Community - launching a new paradigm for online community? at The Knowledge Tree - 0 views

  • So my caution to all of us is to never ever mistake the platform for the community. It is what people do with each other using the tools that matters.
    • Violeta Cautin

      the community is us
  • The key indicator for us is that community is present when individual and collective identity begins to be expressed; when we care about who said what, not just the what; when relationship is part of the dynamic and links are no longer the only currency of exchange (Packwood 2005).
  • Because most blog communities are not bounded by a technological wall and have very permeable boundaries, they can grow far beyond the ability of a single individual to keep track of his or her network.
