Left of Black, a video program from Duke University, reveals a conversation between Professor Mark Anthony Neal, Howard Rambsy II, and Jessica Marie Johnson--all of whom are scholars. The three have an educational discussion over digital humanities and its relation to those who study different cultures and ethnicity, specifically Black Studies. Over this thirty minute conversation Rambsy and Johnson talk about what they have been doing in digital humanities and what can be done to incorporate more Black Studies work. For instance, Rambsy has been creating archival work in Black Studies by posting historical issues of "Negro Digest." Johnson explains how media effects the finance black studies digital humanities receives and that there are a variety of ways to produce black history in powerful ways online. Rambsy believes one great way to spread black studies digital humanities is to introduce and push students into projects in related fields.

This article discusses how African-American studies are merging with Digital Humanities at Duke University. The journalist explains the task is not entirely easy, for many of the black studies scholars are not willing to converge with digital humanities, because of their skepticism towards technology. Many of these scholars are older and accustomed to the 1960s Black studies model. A professor of Duke University explains the main challenge is to produce quality material that at the same time will contain critical apparatus.

This blog addresses how video games contribute to Digital Humanities. It is a new study that raises questions to how to go about researching and developing this topic. This study can eventually bridge the gap between analog and digital archives, and culture criticism and methods. It can also show how video games are used as a teaching method and the benefits and challenges it entails. This can also encourage discussion about the role of video games in digital humanities.

In this article, Susan Garfinkel compares the changes and shifts in American Studies to those in Digital Humanities. As a grad student at the University of Pennsylvania, Garfinkel was able to gain a first hand account of how an ever changing diverse program can evaporate. The changes then witnessed in American Studies can now be seen in Digital Humanities. Both concentrations are growing and hopefully by incorporating each with the other they will continue.

This article by Elexis Lothian is partly a response to another article, "Does DH Really Need to be Transformed?" by Roger Whitson. The article argues that although people in the field may have had good experiences with regards to acceptance, that there is still room for growth in areas such as queer studies, critical race studies, feminist studies, etc. The article also illuminates a little on the process behind choosing the tag #transformDH as well as some of the groups, such as HASTAC, which have collaborated to support the project.

In this article a case study is shared discussing car manufacturing company Volvo and their strategy in organizing their big data in order to improve their company as a whole. By implementing digitized reports in organized topics such as product design and vehicle diagnostics in to their large Teradata system, data can be processed and completed in one minute, rather than the hour it used to take to process a single query. Moreover, the Volvo company now analyzes a number of issues in an integrated and organized way. For instance analysts can predict failure rates of vehicles over time through the monthly stored collected reports of cars that have experienced specific failures. They can also correlate mechanical failures with the specific geographical areas the vehicle is located in. A car in urban Japan will most likely experience different conditions in rural France, and with DRO error codes (diagnostic read out data recorded in each car about performance and mechanical failures) collected through the Teradata system, analysts can figure out how certain mechanical failures connect to different locations. It is with this strategy in organizing digital information that Volvo can create large goals such as creating vehicles no one will be killed or injured in by 2020.

In this blog article, scholar Elizabeth Hopwood asks followers how Digital Humanities can be used for food studies. People are paying more attention to what is eaten and it's health benefits/negativeness--incorporating digital humanities to such a field would be greatly useful. Other bloggers and Hopwood agree on the need to digitze projects for food studies and mention the New York Public Library online menu database.

This presentations shows the findings of a fieldwork study that studied "practices, challenges, and directions in contemporary digital humanities scholarship." The study was part of two projects by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Oxford Internet Institute. These two institutions collaborated to focus on developers and users of digital resources for humanities research.

This short article for the 2012 American Studies Association Annual Meeting represents a call for digital humanists to collaborate and propose ways in which American Studies and Digital Humanities can be transformed to be better address concerns such a marginalization. Provided proof that this is possible, the article highlights such "digital collectives and social movements" such as Crunk Feminist Collective, "shit [people] say" and artists offering a "productive [exploration] of digital productions and methods." The article also highlights in particular the #transformDH movement, and provides links to some of the articles and websites utilized by the group.

Bethany Nowviskie's article proposes an overhaul of modern graduate studies by replacing aging practices and methods of education with more modern and technology appropriate forms of education. One of Nowviskie's key points of criticism it that many of these more traditional forms of graduate education are producing humanities PhDs who do not fully understand how modern universities work and are impacted by the outside world. Nowviskie's main proposal for beginning to replace these aging methods is through the cooperation of funding agencies and respected humanities organizations, ones with a good history of inter-institutional and interdisciplinary collaboration, to utilize grants to reshape graduate studies.

A doctoral student in English whose focus is modernist studies, textual studies, and projects in the digital humanities shows how teaching can be used with technology to make the students question their influences with their writing. His project is to track and evaluate modernists texts that reveal the influence of its history. In finishing his project he hopes to show that electronic editions of books reveal more information that show how books can be unstable and uncomplete.

This study highlights the need for raising teacher's awareness of ER-based reading comprehension questions. This study was conducted to determine how frequently critical thinking is used in EFL reading comprehension contexts at the tertiary level in an Iranian University. To collect the data, the researchers observed all reading comprehension courses in one of the universities in Isfan Province. They recorded 30 percent of the total number of sessions using two mini-size MP4 wireless recorders during the spring semester. The findings suggested that the teachers focus on each CRQ type strongly influences student attention when reading different passages.

This article explains New York Public Library's project called "What's on the Menu?" This database is created for users across the nation, so easily accessible that no application needs to be downloaded and can be used with a simple click of a button titled "transcribe" on their website.Over 865,660 dishes and 13,440 menus have been transcribed for free access. Already within a year more than three million page views have been recorded. Its use is more than handy for culinary students, but those studying graphic design, history, and health issues.

The gap between digital humanities and black studies is a fairly wide one and that's where Howard Rambsy II comes in--his goal is to shorten the wall between the two scholastic fields. This blog entry interviews Rambsy, who is the author of books such as the "Black Arts Enterprise and the Production of African American Poetry." He discusses how black writers help the digital humanities movement by spreading enthusiasm. The author states that the best way to thin the gap is to simply create more collaboration between these two fields.

In this short blog post, Beth Corzo-Duchardt introduces a project she is working on in the Gender Studies Program. She has decided to "ditch" Blackboard, because it does not a smooth functioning user-friendly program for students and her. Instead, she is using Wordpress and is hoping it will work better for her classrooms.
