XML/TEI in the First-Year Writing Classroom - 2 views

    This blog is over a first year teachers proposal to teach a writing course that is digitally based. By teaching this way allows for students to focus more on analyzing, archiving, and transforming into a more modern method. Instead of composing through a word documents, students will use the XML program which does not tell any computer what to do with the information. This program requires students to describe what they are doing as they do it. It also allows students to see all of their editing work and has other advantages that Word does not.

Digitizing Early Caribbean Archives: We Learn TEI - 1 views

    Elizabeth Hopwood of Northeastern University blogs about the process of digitizing 19th century Caribbean texts for an archive. Due to her involvement in the archive, she was required to take a TEI encoding course along with others on the project so that they could learn to properly code everything themselves. As the workshop went on, she began to notice how intricate coding could be as well as how selective you must be in coding to choose what will be coded and what will not be coded. It is up to the individual coder to decide what kinds of things in the text need to be coded, whether that be mentions of gender, commodities, slaves, etc. She ends this blog post with some links to quick tutorials on TEI for those interested in getting into TEI coding for the Digital Humanities.

Cohen Blogs DPLA - 2 views

    Cohen blogs about the future that he sees for The Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). His passion sees to lie in collecting data and content from small, local libraries and museums. He still holds this goal despite recognizing the issues they would face in attempting to convert the material from physical to digital. He also talks about the technical layout and the best way to get it into peoples' hands (incorporating it into an app). He also touches upon technology that we do not have yet or is not yet out of the beta testing stage, and could be in the future of DPLA.

This projects website's main focus as of the opening is to provide scholarly essays on the arts and science in the 18th century, as well as a blog section for professors to share essays on these topics. The project's creators hope to gain contributions from scholars on the 18th century who would normally publish in journals, books, and other print media to add to their online database. This contributions are also open to students as well, and the author provides a link to gain more information on submitting work to the project.

He notes that there are philosophers who work in technological advancement, and philosophers who use technology to advance philosophy, but he states there is no one doing philosophy.
