Details of Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) awarded to new schools reveal the majority of school buildings are not performing sustainably. More than half of new schools obliged to report their energy performance via an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) are falling into the lower bands for asset efficiency, writes Roderic Bunn.

Some companies are trying to stake out a middle ground in wind power by making mid-size turbines big enough for a school or big-box retailer to use, but not so big that they require a convoy of trucks to be delivered.

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has teamed up with Discovery and the Siemens Foundation to launch a new initiative called the "Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge." The initiative calls on K-12 students to develop green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities. The initiative comprises several components, including introducing students to concepts in sustainability, educating students on environmental issues, building up STEM skills, and, eventually, connecting students with scientists to tackle environmental challenges through real-world projects.

Well ... time will tell whether plug-in hybrids will be a "licence to print money scheme" or a technology to balance the grid. Because there is a reason for the peak - we all use energy according to the same pattern, driven by day-night, office hours and schools.
